Conclusion:[U]

1) If you don't care or never going to use the IPTV provided, TP-Link would be good enough. Relatively cheaper yet decent with good signal strength.
2) If you are watching the IPTV, please avoid TP-Link and get an Asus.

Full story here. [U]
I live in a double storey terrace house. The router provided by Unifi not strong enough to cover the first floor. So I decided to get a new router on my own.

First, I bought TP-Link WR841HP. The signal strength is good. Good enough to cover every corner of my house (both ground and first floor) with stable wifi connection. But the problem is, even though it's Unifi compatible, it doesn't seem to support IPTV. Some channels can only be viewed for like 5 mins then the screen goes completely off without connection. Other channels only show black screen. In short, non of the channels are actually working.

So I called up for Unifi support (I spent 5 days just to lodged a report. On the fifth day it took me 3.5 hours non stop calling and waiting on the line just to speak to a manager. A very frustrating experience). Then after bloody 2 weeks time of waiting, I managed to talk to an Unifi field technician.
His explanation is short and simple. Get an Asus router.

So I bought Asus RT-N12HP. After using for two days, so far so good.
Wifi connection strong and stable. IPTV works perfectly fine.

TPLink 300Mbps Wireless N Gigabit (TLWR1043ND) - i upgraded for my iptv (OpenELEC/KODI) from TM router . I bought it 2 months ago....and it's running awesome. I'm staying in double storey terrace as well, my unifi setup on the first floor. even downstairs toilet also got full signal.... thumbup.gif

I also using TPLINK 150Mbps Wireless N Nano USB Adapter TLWN725N for my Raspberry Pi2. Everything works so smooth...can watch 1080p movies also no problem one...

One thing to suggest: I change the DNS settings, point to Google DNS in the router instead using TM DNS settings.

TP-Link routers has always been shitty. Their official firmware is worse.
The only reason why TP-Link is still alive is because their prices is cheap & 3rd party firmwares help saved their company.
Without OpenWRT/DD-WRT, TP-Link would've been dead already.

Not hate speech nor a die hard fan of ASUS.
I'm here speaking on years of experience in using both TP-Link & ASUS.

TP-Link TL-WR1043ND v1 - Only acceptable when using OpenWRT. On official firmware, the WiFi function keep disappearing. Not WiFi channel issue, but the firmware itself.
TP-Link TL-WDR4300 - Worse router ever. Even OpenWRT couldn't save it.

ASUS RT-N16 - 5 years old & still running strong. Not to forget that ASUS still produce firmware updates for this model until today eventhough production for this model has been stopped for 2 years.
ASUS RT-AC68U - Best router I've ever had.

The point is, TP-Link doesn't give a shit about their customers.
Sure, we've heard how bad ASUS is when it comes to warranty but TP-Link non-existant tech support is the worse of all.
ASUS on the other hand have their own tech support guy in our forum that will answer all your question.

You get what you pay for.

Not sure about TP Link router, since i only own powerline from the same brand. No problem and working flawlessly. For router, yes I have changed my stock unifi router to Asus AC66U bought second hand and I am happy with the performance. Plenty of features and best bang for buck spent! Hope it can lasts long smile.gif

I have a much different experience.
I've used the WDR3600, WDR4300 models and didn't find any problems even on stock firmware from 2013. I didn't face any hassles setting them up. No iptv issues at all or any problems with wifi. Both models are very similar and are supported well on openwrt, at least from AA onwards. I only ran BB and had no problems. The advantage over the rt-n12 is that both tplink models have a better cpu and more memory - 128Mb. Asus stock firmware has better support for multiple guest wifi networks out of the box.

The Asus rt-n16, ac68u are 2-4x more expensive so cannot be compared directly with the tplink models you mentioned.

If I had to get a router tommorow, the tplink Archer c7 looks good. As of 2014, the tplink firmware (as well as openwrt) supports unifi/maxis fibre.

I beg to differ.
You can't compare these routers based only on their prices.
You have to compare them based on what they are offering.

TP-Link TL-WR1043ND v1 is a wireless 300MB with Gigabit LAN, thus it is on the same level with the ASUS RT-N16.

If you're going to compare TP-Link & ASUS routers based only on their prices, then tell me, where do you put ASUS RT-AC68U & TP-Link Archer C9?
Are they not using the same processor, giving same wireless speed?

The only differences between ASUS RT-AC68U & TP-Link Archer C9 is their RAM & flash memory size.

For me Asus RT-N13U (Worst Router Ever) > TL-WR1043ND v1 (Worth the money but tendency to have Ping Spike) > TP-Link TL-WDR4300 (Worst Coverage. Keeping as Spare) > Asus RT-AC68U (Worth my every penny. No ping Spike and very good coverage.)

I have an older version of 1043nd, been like 3 years. It works fine even with 20mbps unifi running through it now. Stock firmware still.

I have an asus n12, crap as hell.. advertise as having repeater function, it never worked for me. Had to change to 3rd party firmware for it to work for my intended purpose..

I also have a tplink 8961nd, the older model. Used it when still using 4mpbs streamyx, modded a fan on to of it and it can maintain the lousy snr of the 4mpbs and 24/7 bt.

By far the best router i have is a linksys wrt54gl, it is still running after almost 10 years. No such thing as hang or wifi drop on this lil beast.

The hardware specs of the N16 is better and it supports more features that the 1043 doesn't have like smb file sharing, torrent client. The AC68 is clearly high end for a homeusers and should not be compared to either of the tp-link routers you mentioned earlier.

I did not bring up the Archer c9 at all in my post. When I talked about the c7 it was not in reference to your earlier post.

WDR-4300 working flawlessly since day 1. brows.gif

It is my main router beside ASUS/Apple/Drytek/Mikrotik

So far for wireless access point... Apple Airport Extreme is still the king of reliability. LOL.

For routing purpose,TPLink or ASUS will do.

So far, good TPLink router i have used WDR3600/4300/1043 (latest version)
ASUS will be RTN66u/ RTN18u

haven't tried their AC yet.

The WR1043nd, WDR3600/4300 are popular models which should work with very minor or no issues with Unifi/Maxis at this point. Only user error is stopping people from getting those models up and running.

The WDR3600/4300 models have poor 5Ghz wifi range (and to a lesser extent 2.4G) because the antennas are all shared by both bands I believe. Its still sufficient for normal use. The antennas use sma connectors and are replaceable, so they are handy for mods and diy antennas to improve the sensitivity/range.

Hi guys. I have a noob question.

Does RT-N12HP have any specific version that support unifi? Or all RT-N12HP is unifi ready?

I want to buy RT-N12HP from lazada but none of them has 'Unifi ready' written in the description such as this asus rt-n12hP.

Can I simply buy any RT-n12HP or do i have to look for any specific version that can support unifi?

After doing some research in the Internet, I have purchased the Archer C7. The performance is far better than the stock Unifi router and the price is cheap compared to the features, performance and range of the router. My final decision to go with Archer C7 was made after I read this review from wire cutter.... Here is the link http://www.thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-wi-fi-router/

I think the problem is that the TL-WR841HP sold on Lazada (and maybe others) are the older hardware revision... V1 or V1.2; It seems that the new V2 is what you should get at this time...

3ping TL-WR841HP could be one of older hardware revision

Aaron... Archer C7 very 2.0 is compatible with Unifi. Setting up is very easy but you have to know the userid and password of your Unifi account. This you can call up TM to get it.

FYI, I have sold the Archer C7 in a couple of weeks using it and I bought myself Asus RT-AC55UHP. Why? Because I need some features from the router that Archer C7 don't have or I simply don't know how to configure. Those features like parental controls, etc are more easier to setup through the friendly GUI that Asus router has.

As for coverage or signal quality, the Asus router I bought has the longest antenna I ever find on a router and that gives a very good coverage throughout the entire house, 2 storey with thick walls. The WiFi signal from the RT-AC55UHP can reach up to almost 100m where the is an open space in front of my house.

Setting up the router was very easy, the whole family is happy with the performance, and I can easily manage the router to filter or block or give access to any devices connected to it.

I am a happy camper....

Currently having disconnection when i download at max speed at night
Connection seem fine is light usage thru out the day.

I just bought the Tp-link TL-WR1043ND to replace my stock unifi router.
1)Very stable compared to the Stock unifi especially when playing on line games
2)Longer range, can reach back room with still full bars.
3)Can connect a USB Hardisk and make it into a Network to share.
No more cabut pasang cabut pasang the USB HDD. Now it can be networked shared.
4)Faster Ethernet connection especially for media player.
5)Hyyptv works like it used too.

Dislikes
1)Set was new but already have someones unifi name and password inside not erased (!!!)
Is it factory standard or someone else have used the set?
2)After connecting first to the Laptop nothing happen, actually Windows will ask to whether to connect or not, if slow to ask means you will be wondering why no connection.
3)Set comes with CAT5 cables?..I was expecting at least CAT5e grade (latest stuff are the CAT6)
4) Android and iphong network sharing of the USB handisk is not as easy and download apps to start transfering files and viewing them.5) Inorder to take advantage of the gigabit, your minimum requirement cable is CAT5e and other components need to gigabit capable too. (no fault of TP-Link...its the system) So throw away those CAT5 cables and use CAT5e and CAT6.

If you want just basic Router with gigabit network (for streaming HD) and includes USB slot for networking, i think this is the cheapest (if not compared to the elcheapo Dlink brand)

Overall Satisfied.

I'm using this Asus RT-N12 D1 router, as an upgrade over the stock unifi router. I'm also a 30MB Unifi subscriber.

Am very happy with the router. No problems as of now. Really satisfied with it.

Do we have choices other than TP-Link and Asus ?

Btw, Google is using TP-Link and Asus as their OEM partner for their OnHub.

Does it mean they are reliable blink.gif

Just my 2 cents in this matter, (from someone who has used both TP-Link and Asus):
1) 1st TP-Link model: WR841ND
It was good and fast for the first 9 months, but after that the wireless signal keeps getting weaker, and always disconnect. I guessed that the 2.4 channels were getting crowded in my neighbourhood, so I changed to...
2) 2nd TP-Link: WR1043ND
Again, it was good in the beginning but later on, keeps getting hard to maintain the connection via wireless. Need to reset on a daily basis to maintain any sort of wireless connections.
3) 3rd Asus: RT-AC68U
Got this model at a very sweet price, while travelling overseas. So far, it has none of the issues that TP-Link have. And it runs cool and higher wireless speed too, plus Unifi settings comes by default even though I bought this model from overseas. Quite satisfied with the performance and stability.

Is anyone using the ASUS RT-N14UHP? How is it? The TP Link that I have keeps dropping wifi signals and I have to keep resetting it. Does ASUS RT-N14UHP support Hypptv, or is ASUS RT-N12 sufficient?

The hypptv is plug and play. Just remember you need to put the lan into LAN 4, if not, you unable to use the hypp tv. THe coverage is quite good as the antenna for the router is massively long smile.gif

Maybe the router is faulty? I am now thinking of returning it to TP Link if I dont get any solutions by today.
BTW VOD works fine. I can play the videos. The problem is just with Live TV. Probably some screwed up settings inside

No overheat issues on 5 year operation, the only issues clean the fan and the modem every 6 months. because of dust

With the latest firmware update (9.0.0.4.380_2928) for my RT-N12D1, I am now able to access my router remotely using the ASUS Router Android App on my LG smartphone.

The latest firmware also comes with a new feature called bandwidth limiter, where we can limit the maximum bandwidth for selected clients on the network. A great feature to have. smile.gif

To get the TP-Link C2600 to work, you have to enable "IPTV - unifi".
Hope this info is useful to someone. Took me much time to resolve this issue, sorry if posted before.

RT-N18U is the best among all the N-series Asus routers but it doesn't has 5GHz 802.11ac.

Wireless AC is not common use even for me, I'm using RT-AC55UHP but the AC signal range is narrow compare to N signal.

Wireless AC has faster speed but narrow range, wireless N has slower speed but wider range.

RT-N18U should performs better and more stable than my RT-AC55UHP because this router has 256MB RAM. It has faster 2.4GHz wifi speed up to 600mbps.

After upgrading your RT-N12D1 to latest firmware (9.0.0.4.380_2928), does it still have the UniFi profile and IPTV compatibility ? Thanks.

Thanks for confirming that the new Firmware will not break the UniFi.

Hi guys,

1. Is Asus RT-N12HP good enough for a 3 sty house? Will be shifting house soon, currently using stock modem from TM, not strong enough even for my condo.

2. For 3 sty house, if my tv set is on the ground floor, can i arrange for the router to be placed at the 1st floor? How would they set up that?

Thanks!

I got this 2 routers from TM. Archer C5 have better wifi coverage. Dir850L have extra features like free dlinkddns, can assign vlan on wifi and guess wifi(can connect new Hypptv STB through wifi and watch hypptv).

Stability wise Archer C5 i tested almost a month now, no hang, no disconnection, i connected with 6 to 12 devices. Dir850L i only tested for few days, as the wifi cant cover my 2 story house and i have faced wifi speed degradation after few days using and have to reset the router to restore the speed.

TP Link n Dir850l wifi is not great but usable. I have replaced to this TP Link 1200 n happy with the performance on PC n Hypptv top box especially the dual band capabilities. Wifi range is only satisfactory. Overall I give it 3 out of 5 stars since it's free from TM.

Hi,

Have you tried any of the new WRT routers?

I saw few modem routers from asus https://www.asus.com/Networking/xDSL-Modem-Routers-Products/

My question are

1. If there is a thing why people choose to buy separate router?
2. Is it recommended to have these two devices separately?
3. Does it work with unifi and hypptv box?

I have to on/off my router quite frequently now due to no internet connection even though hypptv box is still streaming uninterrupted. Not sure what's the problem.

All Unifi installation comes with 2 devices, the ONU and the router. You can only replace the router and not the ONU. In order for Unifi to work, a router needs to support VLAN tagging. The routers listed below as they are fully compatible with Unifi with HyppTV working out of the box. Once you purchased the new router, request your Unifi ID and Password from TM. You will need them when configuring your new router. Once you got everything ready, remove your old router and wire up the new router. Configure it and you are good to go.

xDSL modem routers, no
For UniFi & HyppTV, you need to look for model that starts with "RT"

Have some questions regarding choosing a unifi router. Staying in a 2 storey house, ONU & router will be upstairs while TV is downstairs. Intend to get a tvbox for streaming purposes.

Question is if possible I don't want to have a wired connection from the router to the tvbox. So between a home plug & a wireless AP/extender which is better?

based on the speedtest, the average speed i can get is about 28+mbps. if you see the router real time speed, max speed can up to 30mbps.

IPTV works perfectly fine.

huh. i do have these problems too but the service centre just said upgrade firmware, my problem fixed already.

not sure why you still have this problem though

My suggestion is to get a very good router that can cover that specific area u wanted because the wifi extender is the worst thing to use on a dead spot zone. Yes it can drag the coverage to that area but bear in mind it is unstable at all and drop the speed so much.

Note: I'm still reading all the posting to understand and learn what is the best router to get for longer range. Currently using Tplink AC750. But my problem is the coverage still can't reach very well into my room. Cant even stream movie using android box because of the dead spot.

No point to spend extra money for a super good wifi wireless router. The current TP-link AC wireless router that is given by TM is more than enough. It is the good decent wireless router considered that it is free.

The best device that one can buy to extend the wireless network at home is homepage. TP-link home plugs are excellent. Cheap and good. Wired/wireless one u have all the choices to pick from.

Never buy those wifi extenders, they are the most useless devices. As they function like repeaters, u need to place the extenders very close to the coverage of the original wireless routers which it defeats the purpose, and it gets frequent disconnections easily.

Indeed. I just tried a diff router and the result still the same. Been reading about the powerline adapters too. But a friend of mine said that device drops the speed as well. Doesn't it works about the same like wifi extenders? From what u are saying, it works like I put another router at another area. Does it true?

homeplug like the tp-link powerline is using electricity to carry data, so u can place the home plug anywhere in ur house to extend ur existing network. so technically it does not have limitation in terms of coverage depending u are using wired/wifi homeplug.

yes, if u buy the wireless enabled home plug, it works like access point that extend the ur existing wireless network but the main difference comparing to wifi extender is that it does not need to be placed in the original wifi router coverage area but anywhere u like as long u have the power socket at the location u want.

Home plug is the best solution for home users to extend their network for coverage and it is definitely stable enough as long as u have the home plug attached (directly) to the power socket and NOT via power extension. with that, u should get the best result and it should not have dropped connections at all unless ur home existing electricity sockets are having quality issues. If this is also not stable enough solution, u can forget about anything else in the market currently.

i personally had tried all the products and i only statisfy with homeplug and not anything else as I meed to cover my upper level of my home for wireless. home plug is a cheapest and most reliable solution currently.

u can even use it to allow u to place ur hypptv box anywhere of ur house near to any other power sockets instead of next to ur wireless router now as hypptv box must be connected to the vlan 600 of the particular ethernet port of ur wireless router that is configured to allow hypptv to work.

*
Dir850l can do vlan tagging on wifi? that's cool. Because the archer c5 I have did not have the function. I have two unifi installation done on two different locations within this 1 month time. Both I am given the TP-link Acher C5 wireless routers. Both I registered online via TM website.

The coverage is actually really good comparing to any wireless routers I have owned to date.

the cons is that the hypptv cannot work over wifi and must be wired as it needs to be on vlan 600. For my own home, no issue as my wireless router is placed in living room and my hypptv box and tv are both next to the wireless router.

However, for my parent house, I need to place the hypptv box for a tv at a location that is slightly further from the wireless router which I will need either a long utp cable to connect (ugly) and need to find a king cable or I need a home plug to make it work.

Dlink the design is actually very unique which I quite like. Just that I do not like this brand.

as far as i know there's no vlan on mr200, only mr6400 has it. but if you want solely for unifi just get archer C series, since mr200/mr6400 are focused on sim card uses.

using 1 for my 30Mbps 24/7, really good, hiccups happens but quite a rare scene.
the only downside is the router QoS and bandwidth limiter is not doing any good (or i suck at configuring it). I don't know about 2 though.

Based on this review, the performance is overall the same, even compared to higher end Asus router.

RT-N18U seems like too old now. But if you prefer reliability over performance, I'd say RT-N18U still a good buy.

Hello,

How much is the Asus RT-AC68U ???

Thanks

Unfortunately, no vlans on Orbi so you can't use it directly with UniFi.

Can, no problem, in conjunction with a streamyx modem in bridge mode.

For cheap and reliable just get TP Link
C5 works great. C7 works better.

If u got more budget and want more features such as QOS etc, get an Asus.

If stay in double or triple storey house, a single wireless router is not enough to cover whole house. Even my Asus cannot cover my whole house. Definitely need an AP.

From my own experience.

Bought Asus Router RT-N12HP around RM220 to replace my ancient unifi router. Very simple web interface setup plus support Hypptv. Just make sure u remember your account id and password to login unifi and select the Hypptv option in the router setup. If you forgot unifi account password can always call 100 to reset the password as I did. After few verification questions they sms the new password. This model had a very long antenna which almost tip over the router. I configured it to support up to 300mbps wifi connection by setting the Channel bandwidth to 40Mhz. Make sure your wifi adapter can support 300mbps connection.

Happy to hear that you're enjoying the new router. Are you using the 5 GHz band or just the 2.4GHz? If you're just using 2.4GHz, I wouldn't recommend using the 40 Mhz bandwidth, even though that might support it up to 300 Mbps, as the connection could get unstable due to the network mechanism used to increase the bandwidth.

Yep you're right it only support up to 2.4GHz. Updated the firmware after setup. So far quite stable. Reboot once don't know why cannot access internet.

as far as i know there's no vlan on mr200, only mr6400 has it. but if you want solely for unifi just get archer C series, since mr200/mr6400 are focused on sim card uses.

Dear Friend,
I just upgrade my home internet to unifi and plan to use existing MR200. U are right there are no option for VLAN and IPTV setting in the router.
Is it possible for me to upgrade the firmare and is kinda firmware available ? thx
