QUOTE(MarilynPastel @ Oct 31 2008, 12:05 PM) most of the markets can give you wholesale. the weekend market (jatujak weekend market) is supposed to be the cheapest. but the best way to get the best deal is if you have a thai friend or something that can bargain. mbk is good for shopping mall type shoppin if you want t-shirts and stuff. but for crafts and paintings and what not jatujak is the best. but its hot so go as early as possible. i think the bts goes there not sure. some train goes there. heheh. lumpini is also big market. but its more expensive. but that is every night. got a live show every night too with bands. also fancy restaurants. also got the muay thai. there. the underground train thing goes here. i think QUOTE(panasonic88 @ Oct 31 2008, 12:12 PM) for taking the pic of the cricket i dunno. but most people give like 10 baht for something like that. for massages. depending on the place. if its fancy its more lah. this ranges from like 40 baht - 100 baht. usually i give around 50 baht. cause i never go to the nice nice places. too expensive. and i also only do foot massage. maybe body massage you tip more. what about the other forumers? what do you all normally give? Massage parlors are just about everywhere. For those in for the experience, I'd say go for the foot ones, the ones that hurt but feels awesome after. Those really going for some spa/relaxation thing, full body is great and you can just tell them you don't want something too strenous. Though it doesn't really hurt, just sometimes put you in an awkward... position.
Went by central world yesterday, lotsa sales and whatnot going on as usual. If that helps anyone Added on October 31, 2008, 7:38 pmJust came back from a restaurant serving local food near Siam center, I think its called Marina HK ? Some 24 hours one at a corner. Not too bad, a lil pricier then normal. Their som tam (mango/papaya salad?) had a salty egg in it. Which was a first, even for my thai mother. Added on October 31, 2008, 7:49 pmAh, forgot to mention that DJ shadow will be at culture club on the 5th for those who cares This post has been edited by vermins: Oct 31 2008, 07:49 PM |

QUOTE(panda-man @ Oct 30 2008, 01:14 PM) » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « man i been to bkk so many times already and still never gone to china town. hahahah. did you go to jatujak? (i think thats how its spelt) that is the weekend market. its also soooo gigantic. i hung out a lot at lumpini. the place with the muay thai. also got a beer garden and always got concert. kinda pricey cause its a bit touristy. but nice to sit down and chill. There was another shopping complex located underground which you can reach when you take the BTS. All the upcoming designer showcased their design over there. I bought 10 handphone pouches at Chatuchak for only 29 Baht/each made by those upcoming designer. I have checked and it was not available in Malaysia yet. Ussually handphone pouch made of fabric in Malaysia sells for RM8 per pouch. The second day, I went on a Chao Phraya River Cruise. They took us around the polluted river which have many temples by the riverside. Then we were bought to feed the catfish on the Chao Phraya river. The fish stay by the riverside of a temple. Those catfish is really huge. We also saw the mini floating market and the royal barge. It was a great experience. Then they took us to Wat Arun. It was a magnificient temple even in its heyday. The resilience of the builder to build the 5 tower in the olden days with no technology. It was beautiful indeed. The Chinatown alone took up a lot of time to explore. It was like so many times KL. On the way to Yaowaraj which is in the Chinatown district, theres like 2 dozen of shop in a row just selling handphones accessories. Bluetooth selling only for 350 Baht. Unfortunately I don't have a Bluetooth phone. By the evening nearby the Yaowaraj road, when the shop closed it would be replaced by small street peddler selling used watch. I am not sure whether its a genuine article, but there is just like 4 dozens of them over there. Theres even the night market where another food galore repeat itself. Chinatown in Bangkok is full of activity 24/7. I can guarantee if you went there you would have a field day. |

I went to Chinatown market on the morning of 27th October 2008. My most memorable sight was 3 monks in saffron robes collecting alms from the stall owner in the market. According to one of the stall owner, the monks only come on the 1st and 15th of the Budhist calendar where all Budhist believer are encouraged to fast.
One thing I noted was the monk never beg for money when they visited the stall and instead the stall owner give them the groceries product like small packet of rice and sugar. Their bowl for alms collecting is much more bigger and they hid the bowl under their saffron robes. Whereas in Malaysia, most monks especially the white colored robes type(I don't know whether they are scammer preying on M'sian generosity) would come to the eatery place like restaurant and beg for money, in return which they give a string amulet or a budha pix. The monk in Thailand never give anything in return and instead they offer prayer and chanting to the stallowner who gave them the alm complete with cymbal. My mom and me give the monk 20 Baht since we have nothing to offer just for fun. We prayed together with the monk when they chant, it was an eye opening experience. |

Hi all, I was just wondering, my passport expires next April and I'm planning a trip to Bangkok this Dec... Can my passport go through or do I need to renew? Coz I heard from pals that I can't travel overseas if my passport is not valid for at least 6 months.

I think they will not let you through. Just go and renew it. It now takes 2 hours for your new passport, do it through the machine, no queue.

The best ones I've gotten so far are out on the road/streets. Applies to most food and tidbits too
Getting from malls would make it easier with the language barrier though. |
