speaking of the markets there, laz time i been to Suan Lum, Chatucak, n Pratunam.

surprisingly to me, the same items that u can get in Suan Lum n Chatucak, high chance is that u can actually get it cheaper in Pratunam. no joke. nod.gif

Chinatown - for me - is actually nothing much to see, but u can get some nice n cheap food there, like the shark fin n bird nest.

i dont know where is ur place, but for MRT u can take it to the Hua Lamphong station n walk a bit to there.

n there's no need to pay the 500baht anymore.

hi all,
im goin to bkk dis fri 27 until 30 june. i have read all d pages of this thread. juz a question for some sifus here. is it better to speak some basic thai there? especially when u wan to get great discount?
*
Thais generally are friendly people. they'll impress n happy if u can say some basic phrase to them. biggrin.gif

if i remember correctly tongue.gif :
hello - sawadeekap
thank you - krap-khun-kap
how much - tao-lai
expensive - mai-piang

anyway most of them know those english 'keywords' like 'cheap', 'discount' so dont worry. biggrin.gif

QUOTE(estara @ Dec 27 2008, 12:24 AM)
Thanks for the tips. I think I'll be traveling around with BTS/MRT and taxi. I heard the taxis are quite ok if we ask to go by meter. Unless if we're stuck in the jam then it's no fun.
*
beware of some taxi that offer some sort of fixed rate to take u to several places. most probably u'll end up at some temples that no1 go n some jewelry shops.

QUOTE(f4tE @ Dec 27 2008, 11:54 PM)
I heard there are 2 different train lines... How do i pay for the train fees? Izzit like singaporw where i buy one card then can travel any train using the card then scan or have to use coins 1?? or have to buy different card for different train line? is the transport convenient to go around sigtseeing in bangkok?
*
last time i went it use different ticketing, like STAR n Putra LRT here. BTS use ticket while the subway use a chip coin.

QUOTE(estara @ Dec 28 2008, 12:27 PM)
So if I tell the taxi driver that I wanna go to such and such a place and asked for the meter and not interested in anywhere else, that should be fine right?
Oh yes, when we pay for the ticket/coin, what is the denomination we should use? I mean is there a limit on using coins only or only small change and no big notes, etc?
*
usually its perfectly ok if u flag down a taxi by the street. juz that some of them understand very little english or not at all haha. i once told the driver to national museum, he took me to national stadium. biggrin.gif

however when u at tourist areas such as the Grand Palace n Wat Poh, u might found some 'nice guys' who offered to give u helps on directions or info. dont get on any Taxi that these guys help u to flag down n say can get to somewhere cheap. even those officers in uniform at the Grand Palace entrance will trick u like this.

as for the train tickets, u'll need to exchange ur notes at the counters for coins, then buy the tickets using the machine urself.

I cannot speak thai...Will it be a very big problem when I get there such as order food and buying stuff and getting around?? Also do they bargain for stuff there? If cannot speak thai how to bargain?
*
dont woli that much, Thai people are generally very friendly n helpful, they usually wil try their best to help when u ask them something. i met wif a few that got very good sense of humor too. biggrin.gif

those who do business usually know some basic english... well u can safely bet that they know words like 'how much', 'cheap', 'discount', 'good', etc. biggrin.gif n yes, u can bargain everything in the markets there.

having say that, of coz its always good to know some basic thai, such as :

hello -> sawadikap
thank you -> krap kum kap
how much -> tao rai

* cant sure the totally correct pronunciation though. tongue.gif

greet n thanks the local in thai, n they'll impressed ! i once bought something from a lady, after i paid i thanked her in thai, she was like 'OMG WTF i'm impressed' n gave me another 100 baht discount. biggrin.gif

QUOTE(f4tE @ Dec 29 2008, 01:39 PM)
very friendly?? I have heard many negative comments like how dangerous that place is and how you can get rob..also how the peddlers trying to cheat non locals...I really not sure and recently with the protests.. Is it still safe to go in march?? Is bangkok more dangerous than KL or JB?? If i talk to the locals or maybe the train ticket officer they can understand english?? plz advice..thanks
*
of coz not everyone there is 'good guy', but i'm sure many who visited Bangkok b4 will agreed with me that Thais are generally friendly people. well by human nature, negative things are always being highlighted.

n there's really no need to overly worry abt the language issue, most of them can understand standard n simple english. the 1st time i was there i know no thai at all, n i did juz fine there. smile.gif

as for the protest thing... well i hav no idea abt the recent 1. i used to went there when Taksin was ngam ngam being overthrown, n from what i see was everything went juz like normal there, no chaos at all. my GF went there alone for biz trip this past aug/sept, when there's protest going on against Samak, things were normal as well.

hi... any clean hotel with private bath room to recommend with BTS nearby? budget is less than 1000baht...
*
u can consider Samran Place. it cost me ard 800baht including breakfast for a room for 2 laz time. within 10min walk from a BTS station which i forgot the name. quite near to Pratunam area.

QUOTE(f4tE @ Dec 29 2008, 11:03 PM)
ok thanks..after reading your posts I feel that bangkok is not that dangerous anyway..and might continue my plan to go there in march.. I plan for the 9th march holiday so can take less company leave..do u guys think its good to go during that time?? like festivals and stuff can enjoy more?
*
haha dont woli so much, n enjoy ur trip ! not sure abt the seasons though, but 1 of the hotel staff there once told me that generally May or June is rainy season.

QUOTE(DrezzUp @ Dec 30 2008, 09:17 AM)
U r damn RIGHT? Remember folks, the tuk tuk driver try to cheat their way to get biz. As you walk from Wat Pho to the Grand Palace, they will tell u there is an official function at the Grand Palace n r close for the day n ask you to go somewhere else wz their tuk tuk n charge u for a fee. JUST IGNORE THEM!
*
yup, juz ignore them, especially if they speak perfectly fluent english ! biggrin.gif

Thanks..after reading can I assume that bangkok is safer in terms less robbery and snatch thieves but dangerous because a lot of con men...correct?
*
more or less abt that haha. juz be caution coz tourists are always target to con, no matter where.

another possible con / scam that u can find is when u walk thru some park with lotsa pigeon (i mean A LOT), some people will purpose throw some corn or peanuts toward u, making the pigeons surround u. then he/she will come over n hand u a few packet of corns, n tell u some craps like buddha day lah, offering lah, bla bla bla... ignore them n give the packets back to them. DONT feed the pigeons else u'll be asked to pay some ridiculous price for the farking corns !

when i read it at first. i thought... they train pigeons to scam you?  doh.gif kakakaka. i been to bkk numerous times. (my sis used to live there) never did i see a place with many many pigeons. where is this? i think instead of being scammed by pigeon users. you should worry about getting birdflu from the damn pigeons.
*
yeah man, PIGEONS ! biggrin.gif it would be awesome if they actually trained them lol.

1 such place is the park in front of the national museum. there's a shit load of pigeons there. also i think somewhere around Grand Palace got similar area too.

well i agree that the food of Cabbage n Condom is nothing fantastic, but its not that bad as well for me. u can go take a look if got time. biggrin.gif its near the Sukhumvit BTS, n most probably u can see the signboard of it by the main road.

they got Condom-Man there ! biggrin.gif

also there is a restaurant named Yum Saap which is not bad IMO. if u wan to eat something not that expensive n scare of trying the street side hawker can consider this. there's 1 opposite of MBK by the main road.
