QUOTE(thahirah @ Nov 8 2008, 01:16 PM) Hey people im going to bangkok soon anyone here with vast experiencing on backpacking there? You can head straight to Khao San Rd and start looking around that place. There are a couple of cheap hostels/guest houses around there. It's not a peak season now, so there shouldn't be much trouble finding for accommodation. Room rates can be as cheap as RM35 a night.should i book my hotel or just head to khao sarn road for a room? planning to stay in a hostel |

but if you are lazy to look around. you could always just call and book i guess. instead of lugging your stuff around place by place.

QUOTE(thahirah @ Nov 8 2008, 02:16 PM) Hey people im going to bangkok soon anyone here with vast experiencing on backpacking there? depends on your budget, khao san road is a backpacker's heaven if u hav tight budget, no BTS/MRT, just ferry, bus or taxi. u can consider sukhumvit area or silom area which are a bit more expensive. but there's BTS and MRT.should i book my hotel or just head to khao sarn road for a room? planning to stay in a hostel lamphu house at kao shan is a great place to stay but quite hard to book. Added on November 12, 2008, 10:00 amlast week booked MAS ticket to bkk during CNY, this time planning to go Amphawa, quite an interesting place about 2 hours away from bkk, there's weekend floating night market and fire-flies seeing. and can go to the place nearby called maeklong for the train market,. then can take the train go back to bkk. You can find it in MBK (Mahboonkong).
Hmmm, food in general there is relatively cheaper then Malaysia, but really depends on where you go. Prices has gone up, portions are smaller now. |

By the way is it safe to go to Thailand? Should i change RM to Thai baht or RM to USD to Thai Bath? Please advise. Also , what is nice to buy there? What i should bring there? How..much is the petrol there? and is there any cool shopping place other than Bangkok in Thailand? Please let me know. I will be back. |

Wha..That's my dream epic journey..probably will try after my retirement
Suprisingly from your question, u hv not step-in to Thailand & now u are planning to drive all the way to Golden triangle For sure it's safe, I hv drove in few times oledi and the furthest so far was up to Krabi only Thailand things are no longer cheaper as what it was 10 years ago..almost similar to M'sia..infact certain products such as Electronics are even more expensive there. Food is cheap in Bangkok & Chiangmai but not in hatyai/krabi/Phuket. Petrol? - Huh...super duper expensive!! It's fluctuate a lot..in Feb 2007 it was 26bath/ltr, in Nov 2007, price increased to 32bath/ltr. in Mar'08,price was at 38bath/ltr...now probably down oledi but not sure how much....Cool shopping place probably is the nite bazaars at ChiangMai...cheap & interesting range of native products & cheap native massages!! U can't believe that foot massage only cost ~70bath in Chiangmai! QUOTE(sezretz @ Nov 15 2008, 03:46 AM) I will be going to thailand in 2 weeks time for 1 week + . Ill be going to Hadyai , Hua Hin , Chiang Mai , Mae Sai , Golden Triangle . Well, looks like you got most of your answers already.By the way is it safe to go to Thailand? Should i change RM to Thai baht or RM to USD to Thai Bath? Please advise. Also , what is nice to buy there? What i should bring there? How..much is the petrol there? and is there any cool shopping place other than Bangkok in Thailand? Please let me know. I will be back. In terms of safety, its just about as safe as Malaysia and most places really, though crime hasn't been spiking as much there as it is to here. If you are worried about the political agenda/ruckus going on there, its nothing really, just a lotta talk and more talk and more media hype. My parents are living in BKK and they don't even flinch. Change from RM to Baht, changing currency multiple times means you lose out on the profit margin earned by exchangers, so you actually lose more even if another currency is stronger when changing. Nice to buy? Err well, that really depends on what you like no? Though I'd suggest foods and cultural stuff you can't get here. Mangoes, especially the sour/harder ones are great there, but its not in season now. Just try and absorb as much as you can of Thailand and bring back whatever you like Petrol isn't subsidized there and is going at THB28.59 a litre (bout RM2.85). And that was just last month. Supposedly some cuts will be coming but it won't ever go below THB21. Anywho, have fun and stay safe! This post has been edited by vermins: Nov 15 2008, 10:51 AM |

The latest price list for gas and fuel in Thailand can be found here
http://www.eppo.go.th/retail_prices.html In Malaysia, we usually have: - Leaded - Unleaded - Diesel However, in Thailand, they have many types of fuel. The main ones are: - Gasohol 91 - Gasohol 95 - Benzin 91 (Unleaded Regular, Octane number 91) - Benzin 95 (Unleaded Premium, Octane number 95) - Diesel Please check with your car manufacturer on which type of gas suits your car |

Bangkok is easy to get around. The Skybus and MRT is great. So if you want cheap hotel you can stay away from town area. Near Nana station got a lot of 3 stars hotel and should price around RM100. Last time i stay in a Motel called charlie house only cost US15. It is located near Lumphini station. |
