Yeah! I was also scammed by these syndicates while I was on my way to Wat Phra Keow on my 1st day visit. These people are very friendly, take advantage of your ignorance and will tell you that the temple you want to visit is closed etc etc (lots of BS). And will offer help. They will hail a Tuk Tuk for you.
BTW, if the scammer tells you that if government Tuk Tuk is yellow plated, don't believe them! Quickly walk away...White plated Tuk Tuk is government issued, while yellow plated is privately own. So, the scam is you ride on the yellow plated Tuk Tuk for x Baht (I kena ketuk 50B), and they bring you to 2 other Wats and finally, the jewelley shop. You can shop for jewelley (got free drinks and aircon btw, escape from the sweltering heat), and they get their free petrol coupon. If it's 1st time, tak apa give chance lor, bcos also visit those wats mah...nvm lor... But if these scammer comes again, you'll need to tell them off...in stern tone...don't want (how to say that in Thai? Khop Khun krab. Phom My Ow? then geling geling kepala, hand and feet, if can.)
Oh yes, depending on the tour company (ask around), my boat ride was absolutely fantastic. You pay to get what you deserved. My boat had a commentator and toured for about 3 hours along the Chao Phraya river & Thonburi cannals. You can really see the other of side Bangkok. I took it from Tha Chang. You can also do as the Thais does by paying 3 Baht to get across the river. Just a tip, go across the river to Wat Raknang from Tha Chang, there is a back alley full of shops selling at absolutely low low price. Some of the things are even lower than Pratunam and Suan Num Night Market, not to mention MBK. Not many farangs there, so it's catered to locals mainly. Remember to haggle the price. If they can not give you the price you want, walk away. Believe me, they will call you back but will sell it, but will give you funny faces. (Profit margin tak dak oledi lagi but no business also, how? Sell la.)
Hope this helps.
Cheers!

Just to add on something to look out for before you walk around in BKK. It happened to me before.
Never get distracted by strangers by the roadside while you are heading towards your destination. They will tend to be very friendly, approach you and talk to you. They will tell you either its Buddha Festival, monks need to go out for lunch, Palace/temple is close today, etc., then, they will suggest you to go elsewhere first and come back later.
These are syndicates and they have their people everywhere, we bumped into 3 different person (they even got non Thais people) in 3 different temples that eventually will direct us to a jewelery/souvenir store. They will tell you that this 2 days they have major discount, showing you their receipts, etc etc.
It really spoiled our itenary and wasted alot of our times going around.
Also, try not to get rip off for the boat ride around the river, it's not that fantastic, we didn't really enjoy it for the price that we've paid.
