Russia’s Secret Hypersonic Nuclear Missile Yu-71 Can Breach Existing Missile Defense Systems: Experts ![]() Russia is currently working on a new hypersonic missile, which can carry nuclear warheads and breach existing missile defense systems, according to military experts. The new weapon is part of Russia’s plans to modernize the country’s strategic missile force. Russia is said to have spent several years developing the “Yu-71” missile, under a project codenamed “Project 4202.” The missile is claimed to have a maximum speed of 11,200 kilometers per hour (about 7,000 mph or Mach 10), and is also said to be highly maneuverable. Russia has so far carried out four tests of the Yu-71, with the most recent test flight conducted on Feb. 26, Russia’s Sputnik News reported, citing a recent report by Jane’s Intelligence Review. “This would give Russia the ability to deliver a guaranteed small-scale strike against a target of choice; if coupled with an ability to penetrate missile defenses, Moscow would also retain the option of launching a successful single-missile attack,” the Jane’s Intelligence Review report said. According to the report, Russia could deploy up to 24 nuclear-capable Yu-71 payloads between 2020 and 2025. In addition, the country is also expected to develop the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile by that time, which could be used to carry the new hypersonic device, Sputnik reported. The United States and China are also working on the technology needed to build hypersonic missiles, raising concerns about a new arms race among the world’s top three superpowers. China has reportedly tested its hypersonic strike vehicle called “Wu-14,” which has been tested at least four times since January 2014. The weapon, which can carry nuclear warheads while travelling at 7,000 mph, can also reportedly neutralize the U.S. anti-missile shield. The U.S., on the other hand, is said to have engineered a similar weapon, which can travel at Mach 5, or about 3,806 mph, Inquisitr reported. http://www.ibtimes.com/russias-secret-hype...defense-1987590 |

India s Arjun main battle tank praised by Chinese military ![]() Beijing: India’s indigenous main battle tank Arjun was today praised by a top Chinese military official who said it is “very good” for Indian conditions as the PLA for the first time opened its facilities for Indian media to provide an insight into its massive modernisation. In a sign of improved military relations, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) opened the doors of the key military institute—Academy of Armoured Forces Engineering—which trains over 6,000 cadets per year to the a team of visiting Indian journalists. Asked for his impressions of the Arjun battle tank developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Senior Colonel Liu Degang, deputy commander of the Academy which keeps a close watch on the military hardware of India, said it is “very good” and suits Indian conditions. The Arjun is a third generation main battle tank developed by DRDO for the Indian Army. It is powered by a single MTU multi-fuel diesel engine and can achieve a maximum speed of 67 km/h and a cross-country speed of 40 km/h. Liu attributed the rare interaction with the Indian media to a new found confidence in line with China’s opening politically and militarily to the outside world. The academy specialises in training at various levels of caders from diploma to masters and even doctorate studies in tanks and armoured vehicles. Liu said his academy has hosted 300 delegations from about 70 countries and trained 2,700 army personnel from 40 countries and sent more than 500 personnel to conduct international academic exchanges or as UN military observers. Housed in 453 hectares, the sprawling academy, was built in 1.20 lakh metres of built up area. It is one of PLA’s 16 diploma granting institutions fostering officers for its armoured mechanised forces. Besides training cadets for PLA, it also provides training for overseas cadets specially for various South Asian countries, including Pakistan. Besides briefing on the Academy’s academic activities, the team of Indian media flown in from New Delhi at the invitation of the state-run All China Journalists Association (ACJA), were shown China’s Main battle tank 96A, infantry fighting vehicles, armoured personnel carriers, anti-tank missiles launcher T-89, which has 12 missiles on board. Most of the China’s land-based military hardware goes through mandatory trials and exercises in the extreme conditions of Tibet on the India-China border. The 2.3 million-strong world’s largest standing military, the PLA, has launched a massive military modernisation of drive in the past few years. http://m.indiatvnews.com/news/world/india-...tary-25258.html |

Photo of Malaysian chopper landing in Sebatik goes viral on social media ![]() Photo of Malaysian chopper landing in Sebatik goes viral on social media News WORLD The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | June 29 2015 | 10:29 AM Sebatik Island: tribunnews.com Sebatik Island (tribunnews.com ) A photo of white Bell helicopter believed to belong to Malaysia, which was about to take off from Sebatik Island, North Kalimantan, has been going viral on social media. The photo, which was initially used by several local residents as their profile photos, depicted an Indonesian Military soldier approaching the chopper, while dozens of residents of the border areas in the Sebatik district were shown watching the event, tribunnews.com reported. It was not known from where the photo originated, but according to a kompas.com search, it was believed to have been taken at a helipad owned by the Pamtas 512/Dadaha Yudha task force, which had replaced the Pamtas 433/Julu Siri task force several days earlier. "The event reportedly took place at 8:40 a.m. on Sunday," said Viqor, a Nunukan-based reporter, who got a message containing the photo through social media on Sunday. According to local residents, who uploaded the photo, the Bell 9M-YMH chopper, belonging to the Malaysian state, was seen circling three times above the central and northern parts of Sebatik over Indonesian territory. Previously, the helicopter had been about to land on rice fields on Malaysian territory on the island. However, because of a downpour of rain the chopper, believed to be owned by Sabah Air, searched for an alternative helipad. The helicopter, on which Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Sri Ahmad Zaid Hamidi was reported to be a passenger, finally landed at the Pamtas Yonif 521/Dadaha Yudha task force post in Aji Kunig village. The chopper landed for about five minutes, but no one got out. When a TNI soldier approached it, the aircraft took off again and flew to Malaysian territory. The commander of the Pamtas 521/Dadaha Yudha task force, Slamet Winarto, could not be reached for confirmation as of Sunday night. (hhr) http://m.thejakartapost.com/news/2015/06/2...cial-media.html |

SAF promotes first female to Brigadier-General rank
![]() Soon-to-be Brigadier-General (BG) Gan Siow Huang, one of the seven Colonels promoted to the rank of BG and RADM (One -Star) on Friday, was among the first four women to receive the SAF merit scholarship in 1993. SINGAPORE: The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) now has their first female Brigadier-General (BG). Col Gan Siow Huang was one of seven Colonels promoted to the rank of BG and RADM (One -Star) at the annual SAF promotion ceremony on Friday (Jun 26). She will assume her rank on Jul 1. She was among the first four women to receive the SAF merit scholarship in 1993, and she now heads the Joint Manpower Department. In recent years, she has been making calls for more women to choose the SAF as a career. Currently, close to 1,500 women hold combat jobs in the SAF, less than 10 per cent of SAF regular personnel. Every year, about 60 women join the army. She said that women enter the competitive military environment late compared to their male counterparts, but over the years, there has been a gradual increase in confidence in their capabilities. Despite making history, the SAF's chief recruiter does not believe that her appointment will make it easier for women in the force to advance, "Every individual still has to put in their best. (At the end of the day,) it is still which individual is best for the job." The mother of three added that family support has been critical for her to get to where she is today. Her in-laws and her husband, a former regular, have both pitched in to help with the care of her young daughters who are between the ages of three and eleven. "Being able to go to work everyday is a bonus, so I make every single day count," she adds. In total, SAF is promoting 413 officers, 74 military experts and 34 warrant officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force this year. They include Regulars and Operationally Ready National Servicemen. Military expert (ME7) Cheong Han Kwok Francis was also promoted to ME8, a rank equivalent to a Brigadier-General or One -Star Rear Admiral. The rank of military expert is unique to Singapore. The job scope was introduced in 2009 to develop expertise and specialisation in key areas like engineering and intelligence. He said: ""There's slowly greater recognition, not just from the man in the street, the people whom we meet, but also from our foreign counterparts, who in the initial days were fairly unfamiliar with our ranks. But today, they can see the rank and do the read across fairly seamlessly." - CNA/eg After graduating from the London School of Economics, she rose through the ranks and is now head of the SAF's joint manpower department. She is also something of a poster girl for the SAF's recruitment campaign for women. Her successful military career included stints drafting policies, and commanding the Republic of Singapore Air Force's 203 squadron and Air Surveillance and Control Group. But the 39-year-old is also a proud mother of three girls: Ella, nine; Emma, five; and Eleanor, one. Despite her current 8am-to-7pm work routine, Col Gan still manages to spend at least three hours with her daughters in their Bukit Panjang home. "It is always a joy to be there to witness every step of their growing-up years," said Col Gan, who is married to Mr Lee Jek Suen. It was through the military that they met in 1994. He was a naval officer studying in Britain on an SAF scholarship. They got married in 1998. Mr Lee, who left the service in 2006 for the private sector, said in jest: "At least she was holding a stable job, allowing me to be more adventurous with my job options." Col Gan said her second pregnancy was her "most trying" because her husband was away in Algeria. After that, the family decided to settle down, with Mr Lee taking twice-monthly work trips to Shanghai. Col Gan, who also has a Master of Business Administration from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, admitted that as a pioneer female scholarship recipient, she does face some pressure to meet people's expectations. http://news.asiaone.com/print/News/Latest%...722-438997.html |

Air Force: Lost Predator was shot down in Syria
![]() QUOTE The Air Force has acknowledged that an MQ-1B Predator, lost March 17 during an intelligence flight over Syria, was shot down. While Syria's official news agency at the time claimed the remotely piloted aircraft was shot down, U.S. Defense Department officials only would say the drone was lost, and didn't provide additional information because the incident was under investigation. QUOTE(MilitaryMadness @ Jun 30 2015, 09:27 AM) Considering ATM already has like 9-10 female Generals already (if not more, not sure about details), this is quite surprising. to be a general in the saf 90% of the time you have to be a scholar.. and for most females in sg, saf is one of the last place to get a scholarship... if one is commission into the saf via normal route, usually the highest rank you will be able to obtain is col. |

Also the problem is SAF is a conscript-based military. The core professional regular military force is relatively small (thus smaller female officer pool) in relation with the much larger conscript force, which itself does not conscript women (!). ATM is in contrast a fully professional regular army which has a more open intake policy and more female officers (last time I heard was about 13,000-14,000 in all branches, correct me if I'm wrong), so there is more advancement opportunities for female officers. |
