INDIA AWARDS AIRBUS $1.9B MILITARY PLANE ORDER

user posted image

NEW DELHI (TIP): India’s defence ministry has agreed to buy 56 planes from Airbus for$1.87 billion, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi moves to modernise the country’s military, an official said on May 14.

The ministry’s defence acquisition council, which approves big ticket orders, agreed Airbus and India’s Tata Advanced Systems would jointly build military transport aircraft to replace an ageing fleet.

The deal for the C295s worth 119.

30 billion rupees ($1.87b) was agreed late Wednesday by the council along with other orders worth $875m, the defence ministry official said.

“The council has approved a joint bid by European giant Airbus Defence and Space and Tata Advanced Systems to supply the Airbus C295s,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

India is in the middle of a major upgrade of its Soviet-era military, partly to keep up with neighbouring rival Pakistan and big-spending China.

Since coming to power one year ago, Modi’s government has approved a string of military projects that had stalled under the previous left-leaning Congress government, in part over corruption scandals.

Modi wants to end India’s status as the world’s number one defence importer and to have 70 percent of hardware manufactured domestically by the turn of the decade.

His government lifted the cap of foreign investment in defence to 49 percent last year.

The council last year deferred approval of the project for Airbus, which was the sole bidder.

Under the project proposal, Airbus would build 16 twin-turboprop aircraft in “fly-away condition”, while Tata would assemble the remaining 40 in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad in a technology transfer.

Other orders approved include 145 BAE Systems ultra-light artillery howitzers, Indo-Russian BrahMos cruise missiles for six warships and 197 Russian Kamov helicopters, the official said.

The council, chaired by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, also set up a committee to work out the details for the already agreed purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets from France.

During a visit to France last month, Modi announced India would buy 36 Rafale planes in a deal estimated to be worth five billion euros ($5 billion) following tortuous years-long negotiations.

But the purchase agreement fell a long way short of previous proposals for India to buy 126 of the jets made by French firm Dassault.

Frustrating negotiations for that deal stalled over costs and assembly guarantees.

This topic may cause some discomfort, and I apologize in advance if I offend anyone but I think it's a worthy issue to discuss here:

Non-malay citizens always complain of discrimination in recruitment and advancement oppurtunities in ATM (Angkatan Tentera Malaysia), does it has some real truth or is it just an excuse for non-malay citizens for not joining ATM?

AFAIK only unit that has mandatory Malay-only members policy in the entire ATM is RAMD in the Malaysian Army, and they hardly make up 1/4 (my rough estimate) of the entire Malaysian Army. All the other numerous Malaysian Army battalions other than RAMD (Rangers, Armor, Artillery, Intelligence, Medical, MP, Engineers, Signals, Wataniah and other battalions) has no such service requirement, officially literally anyone is free to join if they are qualified, but some people still use the 'discrimination' excuse.

Also no other branch of service of the ATM like TUDM or TLDM AFAIK has this kind of policy. We even see quite a number of top officers in these services are non-malays (of course the majority of top officers are Malays, but that's what you get when so few non-malays to join the service in the first place).

By my own humble research, I came to this very lopsided figure for recruitment for 2010:

Tell me this isn't worrying. sad.gif

Malaysian Armed Forces dismisses senator’s claim on obesity among personnel

user posted image

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — The Malaysian Armed Forces today dismissed an allegation by a senator that 70 per cent of its personnel were obese while 30 per cent died of heart ailments.

In a statement, it quoted the MAF health records to say that only 10 per cent of its personnel were categorised as overweight and 4.6 per cent were obese.

It said that only 20.8 per cent or 16 of 123 deaths in 2013 were due to cardiovascular ailments.

"In 2014, there were 130 deaths and 62 of these were due to illnesses, of which 23 cases or 37.1 per cent resulted from cardiovascular ailments," it added.

Last Wednesday, Senator Datuk Norliza Abdul Rahim reportedly made the allegations in the Dewan Negara, and called for more frequent physical examinations for military personnel.

The MAF drew attention to the periodic health examination carried out biennially by MAF personnel up to the rank of major, aged 40 and below.

Those above 40 and officers of the rank of lieutenant colonel and above had to take the examination annually, it said.

"It is also a criteria for career development in the MAF," it said, adding that various initiatives were undertaken to reduce the incidence of obesity among the personnel.

These included a medical rehabilitation and reconditioning programme for personnel with a family history of metabolic disorders, it said.

The MAF said the initiative to tackle obesity was one of the key performance indicators of the Armed Forces Health Services. — Bernama

J-15 fighters being prepped for Beijing's V-J Day parade

user posted image

Pilots of J-15 carrier-based fighters from the People's Liberation Army Navy are currently been trained at Tongzhou of Hebei province for their participation of the V-J Day military parade held in Beijing on Sep. 3, according to Duowei News, a news outlet operated by overseas Chinese.

Designed as China's first-generation carrier-based fighter, the J-15 can be equipped with air-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles and precision guided munitions. It shares various similar characteristics with the Russian-built Su-33 fighter and even the American-built F/A-18C. Referred to as the Flying Shark, the J-15 had already begun its service aboard Liaoning, China's first aircraft carrier which it received from the Ukraine back in 2002.

In addition to the J-15, other advanced military aircraft of the PLA Air Force and Navy including the J-10A fighter, JH-7A fighter bomber, HY-6 aerial refueling aircraft and J-11B fighter will carry out demonstration flights during the V-J Day parade. Among the four J-11B fighters participating the military parade, only one of them is equipped with the domestic Taihang engine.

The military parade is being held to celebrate the 70th anniversary of theend of World War II. China is not only using the event to demonstrate its hardware, but also its ambition to establish a new order in East Asia. The event also gives Beijing an opportunity to attempt to steal historical interpretation from the Kuomintang, the current ruling party of Taiwan, which at the time headed China as the Republic of China. It was the Kuomintang which actually led the majority of the fighting against the Japanese in Chungking during WWII.

At the time of the war, the Communists could only carry out smaller scale guerrilla warfare against the Japanese and Collaborationist Chinese forces in occupied China. However, Beijing is trying to delegitimize the historical role played by the Kuomintang regime through inviting veterans of the Republic of China Armed Forces to participate this year's V-J Day parade. Most veterans have rejected the invitation from mainland China according to the BBC.

While most ROC veterans are strong believers in Chinese nationalism, they still view the history of the Second Sino-Japanese War in a very different light from the Communist Party of China. To many of them, Mao Zedong was an opportunist who used the Japanese invasion as a chance to take over mainland China from ROC forces. Many of them were even attacked by the Communists on the battlefield while engaging with Japanese forces.

Groundhog Day: ‘Russia Developing 5th Generation Sub’

user posted image

QUOTE
Russia is in the process of developing its next-generation of nuclear submarines, TASS reported last week. According to Vladimir Dorofeyev, CEO of Malakhit Marine Engineering Design Bureau in St. Petersburg, his company is working on a new submarine based on a “network centric system” in accordance with the Russian military’s bold 2050 shipbuilding plan:

The work on the fifth generation of submarines is already underway. The project will be implemented after the Yasen nuclear submarine construction project is completed.

Periodic announcements by Russia’s shipbuilding industry that it is working on a next-generation submarine have been made repeatedly over the past couple of years.

In any case, waiting for the completion of the Yasen project could take a while. The 13,800-ton, 390-foot long and highly automated Yasen-class of Russian attack submarines was supposed to replace older Soviet-era multi-purpose nuclear submarine models by 2020.

Yet, the exorbitant costs of the submarines — estimated to be twice as much as the new Borei-class SSBNs – has so far led only to the commissioning of one out of eight SSGNs, with a further three to four vessels likely to be completed by 2020.

The first of six Yasen-class multi-purpose attack nuclear submarines (SSGN) projected to enter service in the Far East over the next ten years will join the Pacific Fleet in 2017 at the earliest. Russia’s Northern Fleet currently operates one Yasen-class SSGN, the K-329 Severodvinsk, but was projected to receive six SSGNs of this class by 2020, which, given the current status of the Yasen-class program seems highly unlikely.

Due to these delays, the Russian Navy decided that it will upgrade ten project 971 SSN Akula-class and project 949A SSGN Oscar-class II nuclear-powered submarines by 2020 (see: “Russia to Upgrade 10 Nuclear Submarines by 2020”).

Very little information is available about the likely features of Russia’s fifth-generation sub. Back  in 2013, the Malakhit Design bureau announced that it will be equipped with new stealth features, new noise reduction technology, automated control systems, reactor safety, and long-range weapons.

In last week’s interview, Dorogeyev, however cautioned that not everything on the sub will be revolutionary new technology: “The reactor [of the subs] will be certainly based on new principles, but there will be no revolution, and it is not needed after all.” He is also paraphrased as saying that the “boats’ dimensions and speed, although remaining significant parameters, will cease to be of prime importance.”

Given the current financial constraints of the Russian armament industry and the general dissatisfaction with the Yasen-class, the new fifth-generation sub will in all likelihood be smaller, and carry fewer missiles, in comparison to the Yasen-class SSGNs.

Indonesian army inches back into civilian sphere

user posted image

QUOTE
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Nearly two decades after the fall of dictator Suharto forced Indonesia's military out of politics, the army is inching back into civilian roles, risking a setback for democracy in this Southeast Asian nation and perhaps even for the turbulent region.

QUOTE
The army has signed agreements with government ministries and state companies that involve it in areas such as providing security for airports, bus stations and railways and helping farmers increase their crops. Some officials have called for army involvement in Indonesia's anticorruption agency to counter attempts by police and their political allies to neuter an institution that is effective and feared.

Jokowi recently nominated an army general to head all military forces, breaking with the schedule of a reform-minded convention of rotating the post between the navy, air force and army.

"I think it is obvious that the move is calculated to bring the army on side given that the president is having so much trouble from friends and foes alike," said Vedi Hadiz, an Indonesia expert at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia. "It is only the army that can scare the police."

Multipurpose Laser-Guided Rocket Homing System Developed in Russia

user posted image

The system is built around a powerful continuous-action solid-body laser.

The new system differs from its analogues in that its laser beam is scanned by a compact, acoustic-optic twin-coordinate deflector, which has no mechanical joints and is operated by electric signals, making it faster, more durable, smaller and lighter.

“Our systems are smart, innovative and can work with both old and new types of weapons,” KRET deputy director, Igor Nassenkov, told IA Regnum news agency.

“The system ensures high-precision homing for various types of rockets and can be installed on helicopters, ground-based complexes, MANPADS and UAVs,” he added.

The Radioelectronic Technologies Concern (KRET) is a subsidiary of the state corporation Rostec.

U.S. compares China’s South China Sea moves to Russia’s in Ukraine

user posted image

QUOTE
PUERTO PRINCESA, PHILIPPINES – The U.S. State Department’s No. 2 diplomat on Friday compared China’s behavior in pursuit of territory in the South China Sea to that of Russia in eastern Ukraine.

Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken called China’s large scale reclamation projects in the South China Sea, “a threat to peace and stability.”

He said the United States took no position on the merits of competing claims in the disputed sea, but had a strong interest in how those were pursued, and in preserving freedom of navigation.

“The way forward is for China, and all claimants, to freeze their reclamation activities and resolve their difference in accordance the rule of law,” he said.

“In both eastern Ukraine and the South China Sea, we’re witnessing efforts to unilaterally and coercively change the status quo — transgressions that the United States and our allies stand united against,” Blinken said in a speech at the Center for a New American Security think tank.

Blinken’s comments came as top officials in the Philippines claimed that China was pressing ahead with the construction of artificial islands on at least two reefs that are also claimed by Manila, despite Beijing’s pronouncement that some work would end soon.

VIDEO | As CARAT ends, US Navy confirms warships to patrol SE Asia waters

user posted image

QUOTE
A US Navy official confirmed a plan to deploy its warships for rotational patrols in Southeast Asia as it concluded naval training exercises with Philippine forces in Palawan waters.

The week-long Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT 2015) maritime exercises between US and Philippine naval forces saw the USS Forth Worth and Philippine warships BRP Ramon Alcaraz and BRP Gregorio del Pilar  sailing in the Sulu Sea.

The CARAT exercises involved the correct maneuvering of ships, search and rescue operations and gunnery exercises while a US P-3C Orion surveillance plane and the Philippines’ Islander plane flew overhead.

A highlight of the gunnery exercises was a target shooting by three warships at sea wherein the USS Forth Worth demonstrated the firing power of its MK110 57mm gun which discharges 220 rounds per minute at a target some 17 kilometers away.

A US Navy offiial said this type of exercises is the appropriate solution for problems in the sea.

“Regional challenges demand regional solutions. The ability to go to sea and get to know each other and learn how each other operate is very very important,” US Navy Capt. Fred Kacher, commander of Destroyer Squadron 7, said.

The US Navy admitted that it plans to enhance its forces in Southeast Asia including the deployment of four warships to patrol the region.

Kurdish Zagros Gen 2

user posted image

QUOTE
In 2012 TFB published an extensive post about a homemade rifle being used by the PKK in their fight against Turkey. Recently, a photo has surfaced of the same rifle but with a few upgrades and thus I’m calling it the Gen 2. The additions seem to be the removal of the monopod, more ventilation holes in the handguard, different metals or finishes, an improved compensator, and some other changes. A reader on the previous post left this to say about it-

Its called Zagros, it’s range is 3500 + meters.
Single shots.
Was very effective in the Iran vs pkk war in 2011.
Made from ZPU.

By ZPU I’m assuming the barrel is taken from a 14.5mm ZPU anti aircraft gun.

SAS soldiers given hi-tech training how to secretly film terror suspects by expert dubbed 'Q'

user posted image

SAS soldiers are being given hi-tech training on how to secretly film terror suspects using a mobile phone app.

Elite undercover operatives – motto “Who Dares Wins” – are being taught by a telecoms expert dubbed Q, after the legendary James Bond character.

They attend “gadget school” to learn vital new eavesdropping techniques that include covertly videoing suspects at close range and monitoring text message conversations in a crowded Tube train.

The cutting-edge technology is able to translate foreign conversations into English and send them straight to the Government’s spy base, GCHQ , within a matter of seconds.

The four-day course also teaches users how to instantly capture the mobile numbers of a room full of people and send them a message simultaneously, which could be used to save lives in a hostage situation.

A source revealed: “This is real James Bond stuff. The SAS are no longer simply the toughest and bravest of the best, they are now tech-savvy and totally tuned in to the most modern technology there is. They have nicknamed their instructor Q for obvious reasons.”

The special app is developed by military scientists and allows the troops to monitor and film targets from up to 100 yards away without compromising themselves. The GPS feature, which reveals a mobile phone’s location, can be turned on without the user knowing and a target’s phone can also be turned off remotely to prevent on-going communication using the app.

“It’s ingenious technology,” added the source. “These apps have immense value in aiding modern-day counter-terrorist operations. They are not something anyone can simply download.”

The training is being given by a specialist BT technician with top-level security clearance. Other work carried out by the company’s sensitive Home Office-linked wing includes phone taps and intercepting voicemails for the Secret Service. The source said: “The intention is to keep us one step ahead of anyone looking to do us harm.”

The MoD said: “We never comment on Special Forces matters.”

A spokesman for BT also declined to comment.

IRAN EVADES SANCTIONS TO DEFEND AGAINST EMP

user posted image

QUOTE
WASHINGTON – With a deadline looming on nuclear talks with Iran, Tehran has revealed it has developed a “filter” to protect against an electromagnetic pulse attack targeting key national security facilities.

In a little-noticed comment, Saeid Rahimi, director of the Kosar Information and Communication Technology Institute, told the Tehran-based Mehr News Agency that Iran had obtained such products despite Western sanctions.

Rahimi said Iran had acquired the technology, based on illegally acquired surge arresters, at “considerable costs and various strategies.”

Rahimi said his Kosar ICT “knowledge-based group has managed to domestically manufacture” the EMP filter for the first time in Iran.

The filter, which has been approved by security authorities, will be installed “in a number of vital centers in Iran,” he said.

Former Defense Department analyst Michael Maloof’s “A Nation Forsaken” exposes the threat that could send America back to the 19th century in a literal flash.

In an email to WND, George Anderson, founder of Emprimus, a company dedicated to protecting critical U.S. infrastructures from a natural and man-made EMP event, said that such equipment is “specialized” and is prohibited from export to Iran.

M249 SAW Gunner Firefight

Classic Funker footage. This is what it’s all about. An infantry platoon advances, while under fire, into enemy held ground. Using suppressing fire, they cross a couple of open danger areas and then begin clearing a close quarter grid system of qalats, not knowing what is around the next corner.

The video ends as escaping Taliban forces become visible to one of the squad members. The SAW gunner lays down a barrage of fire at a cyclic rate. Get some! ~Will
