QUOTE(bman @ Jan 25 2008, 08:45 PM)
And do you think one can reject the company's insurance plan ?

Sure you can, provided that you sign a waiver and indemnity agreement with the company, in that you agree to forgo that part of the total compensation package and agree to indemnify the company with regards to all your medical issues. But most companies will simply hire you on a contract basis rather than as a permanent employee so that they do not contravene employment and anti-discrimination laws.

Most companies, MNCs at least, are bound by law and policy to not discriminate based on pre-existing medical conditions that would not reasonably impair an employee's ability to carry out his duties.

Why are you guys so ignorant ?

If the company pays for it, don't you think they would know about your status and if it's not good, they will most likely discriminate against you ?

Don't you know your results are sent right to the employer if they're the ones paying for it ?

Don't you people have any sense of privacy at all ?

Why so many asians are such greedy people at the expense of their own dignity, spine and backbone ?

Medical check up for employement is usually a norm even for locals in SG especially in big companies especially MNC. I am not sure whether its a requirement of Ministery of Manpower (MOM), but I suspect it is because all my friends had it whenever they join a new company. Its kind of a standard requirement for many companies (so far, all my job hunting requries check up). The doctor will send a letter to your company indicating your health status, something we call pre-employment check up. Typically, this will likely be the last thing before starting work. They won't send you there for fun because medical bill charged to companies are usually higher. So no one wants to spend $$ without employing you..

As for the insurance thing, not all companies engaged insurance for you. But general cover is under work man compensation for all regardless and especially for certain sector, its a requirement, company must provided. However, once you leave the company, it won't be covered. An being tabled in Parliment right now is the motion to increase the comverage so more people can be covered...

Worker's treatment in SG, you bet is definitely better than MY despite hicups. Many times, workers are the neglient party that don't know their rights and even than, like many Bangladesh and chinese workers in the past, authority though slow at work but are investigating cases and taking employers to court for salaries default, payment etc... However, I must say, there are cases where even the Gov could do only that much, like problems associated with foreign workers paying high prices for coming over, agent issue overseas, the Gov could not do anything because the local agents did nothing wrong. Even Indonesian maids has more rights now since few years ago about ill-treatment by employers being highlighted in the press and TV, employers charged in COURTS and JAIL. Indonesia embassy had workeed with SG side to engaged their citizens and even have something like a club.. not sure what its being called. some kind soul also form care group.... etc... sorry, can't tell much as I don't know details.. but saw part of it on TV. There are also kind souls out there housing these people and Gov is aware of these... even documentary on TV about their plead...

I must say .... May be, SG Gov can do more... but certainly, actions being taken. You can even read in ST forums at times, citizens wrote in to complain about teh authority slow to action and then guess what, the minstry involved actaully replied to the forum....

Do you know that even delay payment for CPF over a few months is an offence, failure to do so will land the company in trouble. It used to like .. issuing warnings, after warning, companies dragging thier feet to pay contribution, etc... now the rules had changed to protect the workers.. Of course, there were few cases where the companies disappeared.. where to find them?

Yea, I got a friend who applied for PR without going through her employer's approval or so-called certification of employment. What she told me is that she explained to the ICA officials that her employer required her to fulfill certain terms and conditions (e.g. bond) if she wanna apply for PR. Somehow, she got her PR within 1+ months.

I don't think we, Malaysians, need working visa, unlike UK. Yea, what we need is working permit and usually your employer will help you to apply after you managed to grab the job.

Nowadays, rental in Singapore is killing our wallet. Luckily, my landlord still rents me at lower rate. HDB 4-room flat, common room, SGD360 per month (for 2 persons), location Choa Chu Kang. Ain't that cheap? tongue.gif

In my opinion, it depends. If u r working in s'pore, its cheaper compared to u bringing RM into S'pore.

A wantan noodles in Orchard road is $4, and in Petaling Street is Rm4 (i am not sure, haven't been to kl for 1 year). To me, for food its a dollar to a dollar. So, how much u spend in eating out a day (assuming u eat out 3 meals a day)?

For traveling, it depends where u are staying and where u need to travel. If u stay in one corner of the island and need to travel to the other side everyday, its expensive. Taxi fares are a bomb, especially in town area and during rush hours. A friend of my cousin stays in Punggol and took a taxi to NUS, the fare was $32.

Your question is kinda difficult to answer... shocking.gif
