Hey guys,

I am looking for a router to replace the default unifi router.

i've been reading about 3rd party routers.
Asus RT-AC68U seems too expensive to me.

My budget is around rm200, and someone here said to avoid routers with realtek chipsets.

Im really a noob in this department, but i would like to get the best out of my unifi package, on a budget.

Any reccomendations for Routers?

use this
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/tools/rankers/router/view

sort by price (just as a reference). select by what class router your looking for e.g. AC1900 etc....

Make sure it's a model supported by shibby's tomato firmware
http://tomato.groov.pl/?page_id=69

double check in shibby forum to see if the router you picked is stable or not
http://www.linksysinfo.org/index.php?threa...releases.33858/

then google search for lowyat or malaysian stores selling the router to check the price

seems to me though you should bump up your budget to rm4xx hmm.gif

for high end routers is rm6xx-7xx

you also need to verify what it is you want to get out of your router and adjust budget accordingly to get it

1. ethernet port speeds. 10/100/1000mb ( 100-1000 is fine, but if you get 100, your local networking speed will be much slower. but if your okay with that, it's perfectly fine for unifi broadband that isn't yet up to 100, but 100 unifi broadband is due soon, so your router won't be future proof when faster speeds become available)

2. maximum simultaenous connections ( this is the number of connections your router can handle. this is usually important for torrenting. my router can support 30k + older models use to support around 8k. you need something within this range or better if you expect to torrent well)

3. do you want to be able to install third party firmware ? (the advantage of third party firmware, is you can install either dd-wrt or tomato. I would strongly recommend tomato because it has better qos features, not to mention a better speed monitor. You can also save logs of your monthly broadband usage to use as evidence of any possible throttling when wanting to make complaints to tmnut or mcmc backedup by logs as proof)

4. flash memory and ram.... the hardware specs people usually look at.
QUOTE
Basically, Flash Memory and RAM on a router add more room to prevent network congestion and improve throughput.

QUOTE
For the purposes of DD-WRT/Tomato firmwares, the larger the memory size, the bigger the firmware build can be installed. That also means that the router can offer even more advanced features.

5. router throughput is 3 things. download, upload and maximum. each of the router reviews will show you these values, so you can understand how the routers real life performance.
QUOTE
Good question. Throughput is the average rate of successful delivery of messages through a network. Simply put, throughput measures the speed of message delivery inside a network. If you think about it in relationship to networks and Internet connections, throughput defines the user experience. The key to a pleasing user experience is uninterrupted service and smooth data transfer.

Digital hiccups cause frustration, annoyance, head-banging and if consistent become a major interference in overall productivity. Who wants to lose productivity because of poor network communication?

6. wireless. the current wireless standard is wireless ac. the previous was wireless n. for performance i suggest getting a wireless ac router ...... though your other devices will need to support wireless ac e.g. wireless usb adapters, or integrated wireless adapters in your mobile devices.

PS: to get a router to work on unifi you need to setup vlan tagging. this is possible on both dd-wrt and tomato firmware.

Moogle, you sure DD-WRT supports Unifi VLAN tagging? Last i checked they don't support 3 digit VLAN tagging.. only 2?

EDIT: I'm using Asus RT-N16 atm.

eh rely?

well i think i saw on forum someone was using vlan tagging for dd-wrt. i don't use dd-wrt myself so i didn't look further than that.

you may need to use the lowyat search to verify this though to be sure hmm.gif

but on lowyat seems to be a lot of users are using dd-wrt more than tomato (which i find odd rolleyes.gif ) so there's bound to be some unifi user guides how to get dd-wrt vlan working on unifi i'm sure hmm.gif

here a quick search

UniFi DD-WRT Vlan Tagging Setup Example

Generally the steps are:

Create a VlanX with 500 tag number based on the WAN Port "VlanX" assignment
Save, then Apply Setting, reboot the router
Assigned the created VlanX.500 to the WAN Port Assignment
Note: If cannot find the created VlanX.500, then either the device unable to support or the physical port is different.  Either way it's going to be complicated, better get a device which can support 3 digits vlan tagging.
Unbridged both VlanX & VlanX.500
Save, then Apply the setting, reboot the router again
Make sure the rest of setup including PPPoE user ID & password is correctly entered before connecting the WAN to TM's BTU unit.

Then how does KLSeet use his TP-Link TL-WR941ND (with DD-WRT firmware) to connect to UNiFi?
He mention in his guide, can connect to UNiFi, the only thing that doesn't work is IPTV.

oh apparently i found this

QUOTE

DD-WRT doesn't support VLAN number with 3 digit.

QUOTE
It depends on the chip. Atheros (like what TP-Link TL-WR941ND uses) does support 3 digits and you can enter these numbers directly into the DD-WRT web interface.

I can confirm that it is possible to get it working for both 500 and 600 on DD-WRT but you'll need to use custom/modified switch drivers. More details here if anyone is interested: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=86919

theres even a vlan guide for openwrt (who uses that these days doh.gif )

but i only endorsing tomato router so.... tomato for unifi vlan guide is here

If people wish to use tomato firmware with unifi, you need to set VLAN as above.

Hope this helps. Do subscribe unifi through me - anywhere in Msia. I'll be glad to offer further assistance in setting up smile.gif -- as well as guest networks, etc.

pfsense is also another greate alternative i also recommend. though like dd-wrt, there is also issue getting iptv to work
QUOTE(polarsouth @ Nov 1 2014, 04:42 AM)
Hi guys, this thread despite being light on details, seems the most promising source for me to get my hyppTV working with pfsense. I have managed to get the internet working but not hyppTV.

My setup:-

3 NICs, 1 WAN, 1 LAN and 1 HYPPTV (direct connect to my IPTV box)

So far, i had created vlan500 and vlan600 under the wan port. I created a WAN interface with pppoe under vlan500 and managed to get the internet connection working.

royal_jelly, I have these questions for you:-

1) Create IPTV with vlan600
- Does this mean to create a new interface with the created vlan600 on wan port?
- if that is what you mean, should I create a static IP for the interface ? leave it none ? DHCP ? PPPoe to unifi server again ?

2)  Bridge your connection with IPTV assign port
- Means bridge my WAN interface to my IPTV interface ?

3) Do I need to create a vlan600 to my HYPPTV interface ?

Im hoping to bridge it to my HYPPTV (nic connected from pfsense to IPTV box)

I will appreciate it if you could shed some light or show me how it should be done. Thanks in advance.

here is the overview by klseet laying out all the alternative router options possible for Unifi
https://klseet.com/index.php/replacement-option-summary

PS: regarding iptv vlan, does it really matter you get iptv ? don't get me wrong, iptv is definitely the future, however the hypptv content is kinda rubbish, so then what is the point ?

Your better of using netflix, and you can just use regular broadband for that and stream directly to your tv, assuming your tv has an ethernet port to receive internet connectivity. If you got a smart tv like samsung, you will have the netflix app installed. or even a usb dongle like chromecast or something.

Guys,

About my problem on LAN upload being half speed (<5Mbps) ... on VIP10.

I just changed to RT-AC68U surprisingly speedtest on WIFI is perfect with upload/download = ~9.5Mbps.

But my LAN is still upload = ~9.5Mbps and download = <5Mbps

So, it is not a router problem. Only suspicion left is the PC / Windows 8.1 which is pretty much default setup. I checked network properties...there is nothing that I found to restrict upload speed.

Any ideas?

Hello. Sorry if my explanation is kinda long but...

I want to install a new router (RT-N18U) but I forgot the Unifi PPPoE username and password. When I called Unifi, they said they couldn't look at the password and the only thing they could do is reset it, which they did straight away without telling me until AFTER they had reset the password.

I panicked and thought that the password that I currently have will not work anymore, so I set the new password in the old router setting straight away.

Do I have to do the same and put in the new password for the BTU? If so, how do I even access the BTU?

Thanks in advance.

After "reset", your old password won't work anymore. So, you'll have to use the new one that the Unifi cs provided.

The btu unit is just a modem. Every settings is done thru the router.

You don't need to access into the BTU to set the password.
BTU is not the one doing PPPOE, it is the router.

Just set it in the router.

Anyone received offer from TM regarding upgrade from RM149 5Mbps to RM169 10Mbps?

Is this a one time thing or is the price already reduced in the first place?

EDIT: saw someone getting the same offer. Guess it's for selected customers or because current contract ended lol.
