I have a question. I hope someone can enlighten my about it.

I tried overclocking my rig

Specs:
AMD Athlon64 3000+ (s939)
ASUS A8N-SLI Motherboard
Advance Modules(R) DDR400MHz (PC3200) 512MB*2
Palit NVIDIA(R) GeForce(tm) 7300GT Sonic 256MB DDR3

And this is what I achieved.

My question is:
In the BIOS, I set my RAM max speeds as DDR333 but somehow with the current overclocking settings for my CPU, I got a 220Mhz RAM (according to CPU-Z). Which is DDR440 I believe? Whats the reason behind this?

and also

Did I do everything correctly? What is not right here? Besides the RAM speed not sync 1:1 with FSB.... sweat.gif
*
hy there...the reason you using memory divider is to limit the RAM from clock way too high for that RAM...let me explain (hopefully)...
you got nice Venice A64 E6 which is can be overclocked up to 2.88GHz (320 x 9), but the problem is, you can run your RAM at 320 too (1:1) due to chip limitation, so here's the memory divider comes in handy, say you'd still wanna run 320 x 9 but you have to set your RAM speed even lower in order to make it happen.ok...say you've got 320 x 9 while your RAM 320 x (5/6) (166MHz divider) so it'll run 266MHz or 533MHz instead have to run 640MHz with instability issue...

-edit-

Okay nvm I did some google-ing and I found out what a ram divider is already doh.gif

My next question is:

My FSB is 270Mhz but my RAM speed is only 220Mhz...

Does that mean I'm using a 5:6 divider?

Hmmm.... is this memory divider a setting in the BIOS or did I just do that myself?

Btw, I still don't understand why it went up to DDR440 when I set to DDR333....  sweat.gif

in the BIOS...
dude, you can't think exactly that way, it isn't absolute DDR333, as i told you earlier, its for limiting the speed...it'll run 333MHz only if you didnt overclock (200 x 9), everytime you increase HT (FSB), you also increase the memory clock's FSB, say 300 as for FSB and 300 for RAM, but since you limit the RAM at DDR333 mode, it's 300 x (333/400) got that?

Whoops... ignore my above edited question too sweat.gif

I finally get it. Setting it at DDR333 means to set 333/400.. but not exactly DDR333.

Thanks sniper69 for helping me understand this.

So basically, if I have got good RAMs, I shld try to set it to DDR400 which will make it 1:1 ram divider.............. did it get this right?

yes...you got it right...
here's my overclocking step (my own preference though)...

Mission : Highest CPU Speed (GHz)
CPU Multiplier : Stock (9x) - leave it alone
HTT Multiplier : 1x (instead of 5x)
RAM FSB : 100 (yes, lowest speed tongue.gif)
RAM Timing : Stock (Auto)
vCORE : Stock (Auto)
vDIMM : Stock (Auto)

from there, i increase from 200MHz with 10~15MHz increment and each reboot, SuperPI and Priming for about 15 minutes...after that will continue overclocking to the max...

Mission : Highest RAM Speed
CPU Multiplier : 5x
HTT Multiplier : 1x (instead of 5x)
RAM FSB : 400 (Stock)
RAM Timing : Stock (Auto)
vCORE : Stock (Auto)
vDIMM : Stock (Auto)

just like 1st mission, each reboot with 10~15MHz increment (RAM FSB for sure)

from here, you should get how far CPU and RAM can go...again, this is just my step in overclocking, and now running stable at 2.88GHz (320x9) with 1:1 (Team eXtreem TCCD PC4800), but have to use divider DDR333 on Kingston HyperX CH-5 in order to get 2.88GHz @320x9)...

ok i have burned in my rams @ 2.85v for more then 4 days iianm. but until now, i still cannot put my ram speed to more than 239mhz. the moment i set it at 240mhz, Windows won't load. the Window's screen just stays there while the blue moving line keeps on moving.

so what do you guyz think?

my RAM can't stand that high speed (KVR only cry.gif ) so i use 133MHz divider instead . Attached Image

FYI, I'm on Enermax FMA 350W + A64 Venice E6 3000+ (Stock vCORE) + Team eXtreem PC4800 (3-4-4-8 @2.87vDIMM)...it's not that good compared to Opty or newer CPU tongue.gif, but hope it'll help you guys on how-to overclock kaw...bout ValueRAM...i don't have the screenie, but i used to have Kingston KVR Samsung UCCC which i succeded to get DDR533 3-4-4-8 @2.87vDIMM...

you might be want to loosen the timing, say 2.5-4-3-8; 2.5-4-4-8 and 3-4-4-8...did you tried vDIMM?increasing it a bit might help also...just a thought...icon_idea.gif

@ sniper69

What is DRAM idle timer? Your says 256 clocks... mine is only 16clocks. Does that mean mine is slower or something?
