Wah seh brother !! this one really poison ler !!
Do you mind to share the V brake and brake level model and price ? i will change the break system straight safety 1st and see got trade in or not.
will upgrade later for P20 spec. if you dont mind pls share the parts model too if possible.
thank you very much. What ride you upgraded to ?
*
i would go for vigor like ettige said before.price wise and performance wise the vigor seems solid and better performance.

i was scouting for vigor before as the frame same like vector but ended up with verge p9 2nd.that time dahon switching their malaysia distributor from lerun to guan chow.so by that time no vigor in stock!

if u considering to upgrade for 451 wheelset, do consider the c-brakes as it does give u a better braking power compare to v-brake..

Yupp. You are lucky that you can shower in the office.
Let us know the experience of cycling to work.

Hey guys, so today my first day ride my bike to office + komuter. I decided to ditch Putra LRT (KJ Line) as it is not feasible at all given the human volume that ride lrt during office hour. I have tried bring bike once during non office hour (10 am) in KJ Line LRT from Gombak to Dang Wangi station, no bag, passed.

For today, cycle to Komuter Sentul from Gombak, in about 30 minutes. I was late from home about 7:45 am so traffic is there. Really ride defensively as office people are fierce when they drive to office, blink.gif , cars don't care if you are there really at the edge of the road and still squeeze you. I thought motorbikes are my allies but they are no less competitive in the race of who gonna reach office first sweat.gif A motorbike still squeeze in between me and a car and give me the 'look'. LOL, these people love office too much tongue.gif So, what I'm saying is we really really ride defensively in morning traffic.

Nevertheless, made it safely to Komuter Sentul in 30 minutes, which is 10 minutes earlier than the first time I ride it in trial ride in the evening. In komuter station, I fold it trolley style with the handle not folded so I can push it around like trolley. I look at the guard if he gonna stop me, I bring my bike bag too, just in case. I asked the guard, can I go in like this, and he give me an ok nod, so I push my bike like trolley in to the lift and to platforms. Arrived the other station also, I push it like trolley into the lift. This reminds me sometimes the lifts in komuter will not work, so I make a mental note that when those times happen it will be a bit trouble to carry it up and down the stairs. Then I continue my cycle to my office about 5 minutes.

My office is at level 3 with no lift, so I fold it and bring it up the stairs. The guards said I can leave it under the stairs, but I said i don't have lock so scared it will be gone. They said it's ok, there is CCTV, but I don't wanna take chances hehehe blush.gif

and regarding shower, for today I don't feel it's necessary as I sweat only like when I walk to office. I do bring toiletries just in case I needed one.

Anyway, so I arrived safely in about 50 minutes including komuter waiting time. Gombak to Jalan Tun Ismail. I think for now I'll do this when I don't have to go elsewhere after office. Overall, it's nice to cycle to office than standing in lrt for one hour to arrive my office, only to continue another 10 minutes walk. Cycling is definitely better.

Here are pictures how I fold it like trolley in komuter. And in office the bike fits behind my chair at my desk.

yape. hopefully etigge can give some tips on the items list.

btw.. will it be hard to DIY ? i mean get parts and upgrade/install our side. or we really need experience guy to install and tune.

And what do you guys think about ORI bike ? their folding mechanism seems convincing.

Thanks

hehe, yeah, tomorrow I'll try to go earlier. safety first and yes, ride defensively. give way to people and always alert. assume people don't see you, and slow down each time at a place where a car / motorcycle will come out, as they always assume you are slow and come out unexpectedlty. these are what I observe today.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yup, my budget is a bit tight, im a student actually but i have been wanting to buy one so for a start mayb im gonna buy something affordable. I did survey for folding bikes online within my budget n found a few in lazada wirhin the range rm239 and above, with the specs being single speed or 6/7 speed. I also found one model, 21 speed mongoose bike at rm499. So would like to ask that in my case, do i really need to buy one with more speed since im just going to use it for leisure (for now)?
*
Before you consider a 7s & 21s gearing, let me share some general knowledge with you about gearing info i learned from my past experience. The gear sprocket on rear wheel for 7s bike most probably is 14t-28t (14-16-18-20-22-24-28) while the chainring on the crank may be a 52t. 14t is for flat road while increasing up to 28t for easier uphill climb.

21s gear most probably is using the same 7s gear sprocket rear but with a triple chainring (7sx3) set on the crank. On the mongoose bike you mentioned the smallest chainring look like 22t. If you need to use this chainring to cycle uphill, it may be much better to get down and push your bike instead because you are cycling on a walking pace speed but wasting alot energy to cycle uphill.
More gearing doesnt mean better. Proper gearing ratio is more important. An 8 gear sprocket 11t-30t (11-13-15-17-20-23-26-30) with 2x chainring can perform as good if not better than 21s.

With your budget, i will get a rm400 bike with the remaining $ for gloves and helmet. Things to look for on the bike :
1. The folding clamp - get those with straight clamp lock, which do not have visible spring on the underside of the clamp.
2. Shimano tourney SIS gearing - much better than other brands in this price category
3. Alloy frame - if can get alloy why not
Happy hunting!

Let me explain 20 inch (406) and 22 inch (451). The numbers in bracket is the figure in millimeters for the diameter of the rim where the bead of the tires rest. Both are classified as 20 inch just like the 16 inch rims where 349 is used for Bromptons and 305 for other models. Both are classified as 16 inch. First you have to consider what terrain are you using your bike? If it sometimes goes a little gravel roads or some slight offroading or into some fields, then 451 is not suitable as the tires are quite limited to slimmer or slicks (botak kind). They are meant for low resistance tires like road bikes. The less resistance compensates the same effort needed for a smaller 406 but off course a 406 with slick tires are much easier to pedal. There are pros and cons, eg.

When we were riding Sekinchan to Sungai Besar, we decided to use the coastal road hugging the beach and this road is like those in rubber estate, offroad! Those on slicks finds it more challenging and has to keep more attention to riding where else those on bigger 406 tires with bigger treads just cruise over it. Then when going through wet or muddy patches, 406 with bigger tires triumps over those on 451s due to the lack of treads on 451 tires. So, like I said, priority must be ascertain before you jump onto the wagon.

As for the choice of bikes, that's totally your choice. Again your priority, if budget is a constraint, then go for the Java. It seems to have everything but if you ride more seriously and join other groups, I can bet you that you will eventually change as you improve. It's not a bad bike, even XDS also copied their design. But Dahon is more expensive for a reason. The MU is a proven frame compared to the Vigor, in fact the dolphin design of the MU is the most copied design by other makes. Java FIT on the other hand, IMO, has disc brakes which have lower performing brakes than the V-brakes of the Dahons (most mechanical disc brakes are anyway), have much wider fold, hard to put it in a bag, shorter wheelbase which makes riding more twitchy (but can be gotten used to) , a wider front fork as it uses 100 mm hubs and much heavier. Dahon Vigor has a conventional chain stay which makes the frame stronger and also the geometry a better ride though. The best is still the Dahon Speed. Even Joshua Hon from Tern claims that before.

I suggest you just buy one on impulse and ride, only then you can understand what it feels like and where your priority lies. Before that, whatever we say here doesn't really mean much. I have on so many instances suggest something but when they head to a local bike shop, they go for another. tongue.gif It makes it easier to change bike if you go for Dahon because later stages if you want to change, regardless of whether it is a mountain bike, roadbike or better foldie, it's easier to sell.

Once again many thanks for the input !! i think azamu have Speed P8. Alright so forget about Java now.

Speed P8 is even cheaper compare to Vigor and MU. If performance is the concern as i got fren with RB will ride together 95% will be just flat road.

between speed Vigor MU which should i take ? 3 also i like the design lol. Just which one worth for the bucks and easy upgrade later.

I think you provide upgrade service right ?

Thanks rclxms.gif

I think the mentioned Speed p8 above is the older version of Speed p8 (2011) not the latest one (2015). Older version is hard to get nowadays.
Again as just what ettigue said, its all depend on ur priority. If u want performance, i think vigor enuf edy. (9speeds drivetrain). Then train ur leg with ur RB friend.

Again as just what ettigue said, its all depend on ur priority. If u want performance, i think vigor enuf edy. (9speeds drivetrain). Then train ur leg with ur RB friend.

The older version in red is still available in Kimbell Jaya but not Taiwan made as per circa 2011 but made in China. The newer green/white is actually the same chromoly frame, only colour different. Better tires also with Schwalbe Marathons.
