Unless you're very smart or spent a few years in Australia prior to entering university, I strong discourage people taking up any work during their first year. Listening to the experiences of my friends, do not expect your 20hr/week job (the maximum on your student visa) to cover more than 30% of your living costs. And think of the fact that you need to have time to study.

That said, the pay here is quite reasonable, even at the starting wage. A 6 hour shift pays for the monthly broadband charge in my mates place.

Well i guess you didn't include the cost of living in Australia while you are earning that $30k/yr job into your calculation not to mention the tax you are gonna pay as well, after all expenses taken into account, i doubt you would even have one-third of that $30k left in your pocket at the end of the year unless you are spending really thriftily..

p/s: the above mentioned is based on large cities like Sydney and Melbourne.

I will NEVER come back too. There is no point going back to a place which is declining and full of discrimination. cool2.gif

No, i am still studying, what i said was based on the experience of my cousin who had graduated few years ago and is currently working (she's a local though, so i figure it might be slightly different from what we, intl student will experience, but anyway right now thats the only info i got)

well last night was an indication on how cold Brisbane will be during winter

well personally i dont use the heater , i just negate the cold by putting on more layers of clothing. helps keep my landlady's electricity bill down as well (my rent includes electricity hehe)

if you were to get a heater, get either a convection heater or those oil filled heaters

Ic...probably will decide to get one then...is the convection heater the one that looks like the thing to catch flies?(erm so sorry i'm not really good at describing that? and do we have to add oil or whatever thing into those oil filled heaters?

Thanks

better think twice before turning on the heater else if you go loco on using the heater 24/7, you'd better be prepared for a hefty electricity bill come end of winter

yup. the one you're describing is the convection heater and no you dont need to add oil into those heaters. be warned though after period of time the heater might develop leaks and be a nuisance wink.gif

Does anyone know of a good place for nasi lemak in Melb? A friend told me Kayu was closed when he went there couple of weeks ago, not sure if it's permanent or just temporarily or was just a off-day.

Speaking of that, good luck everyone, and make full use of your swot vac.

Yeah, it has been quite cold these past few days in Brisbane. Remember the fog all over the place on Monday? I thought it was the haze. tongue.gif I've been in Malaysia for too long....

So far, I haven't had the need to use a heater. I just keep the windows closed and more clothes on me. Althrough I'd recommend a fan based heater (going for $18 in some places) for the long study hours into the winter nights. It can get quite cold (about 15C)at night and first thing (18 C)in the morning. I know, because my toilet is outside.

If you're lucky, find a place with air-conditioning. My friends place had one. Damn nice! Good for the swot vac.

Good luck to all studying for the end of sem 1!
