Just a word of caution though since I'm Australian educated engineering student.

Don't take for granted that when the university tells you that it's a 4 years degree program means you can complete the degree in exactly 4 years like local universities do.

In general, a BEng paper in Australia has about 35 modules to complete. Each year you'll have like 2 semesters and a short one  at the end of the year.Taking 4 subjects per semester is a really crazy thing to do and I must warn you that most of the time you'll barely get through with passes or if you're lucky, probably score in one or two of the subjects.

Unlike in local colleges where I've seen students taking over 5-6 subjects in a single semester and still make it with most subjects getting As, do not compare this with Australian universities.I'm already 23 this year and while all my friends who entered local universities with the same engineering course that I took have graduated, I still have another year to go with my degree.

You may one to ask other Australian students in this forum about how they find about the number of years they took to complete their degrees.3 subjects itself is already taxing.Four subjects per semester is the maximum that you can take although the universities won't stop you from taking a much as you like since resitting means more money.

I have a Australian friend who is taking double majors in engineering and business administration is already 26 this year and he tells me that his course is taking so long to complete.

does this apply to other courses as well such as commerce?

hmm i'll be going to unsw this feb for commerce, anyone here is going there for the same course or currently a student doing this course there?
dunno if this is only me or what, but among those of my friends going to aust, almost all are going to melbourne, none going to sydney except for me, so i was wondering if melb is really the more desired place among students here as compared to sydney?

There shouldn't be anything to worry about if everyone is going to Melb as isnt the whole purpose of studying abroad is to meet new friends from other countries not just limited to malaysians. Having said that sydney has a lot of malaysians and indons itself so nothing to worry about  tongue.gif

well i agree with you, my point is i'm just having this feeling that more students have melbourne(as a destination, not only melb uni) as their top choices over sydney or other cities in australia...
and yeah meeting new friends is the one of the main objective studying abroad, but i would rather have some old friends, at least one or two will do going to the same place with me, at least we could provide each other company before we get to mix with others isnt it, but that's just my opinion...

i am currently having this concern bout my textbooks, from what i heard the textbooks are pretty expensive in australia, but i have been looking at various sources in hope to be able to find some info bout the booklist, but to no avail.. i wanna know is there any ways to get the booklist earlier in order for me to look for the books here first before leaving to aust? or any of the second or third year students has some experience to share regarding this?
i have thought of asking my parents to search the books here once i get the booklist and mail it over to me, but i have no idea how much it's gonna cost for courier service and the possible custom charges if there's any...
fyi i'm gonna take commerce in unsw this feb, and i have been told not to get second hand books by my cousin there as according to her, books used in commerce are regularly changed i.e different edition and so on, so second hand option is out for me...

chris: based on your experience, how often does it occur when old texts are usable on the following year?
i tried searching at the bookshop website and it says textlist wont be out until mid feb which is around orientation sad.gif
btw is there any difference in terms of price between buying from the university book store and other book stores out of the campus?
crazynut: what course was/is your sister taking? commerce as well? and just wondering how long did it take to ship the books to your sis in aust?

i was going through the list of what ought to be declared, and i saw a section saying that used sportswear i.e shoes that you bring have to be declared as well to check for possibility of trapping contaminated soil on your shoe, this is the first time i came across such rule, just wondering does anyone here really do declare their shoes?

you are wrong, in terms of engineering monash is rank higher than uni melb..

Top 10 Engineering Universtities in australia:
1) UNSW
2) ANU
3) Monash
4) Uni Melb
5) queensland
*
this based on your own personal ranking preference or you got it from some other sources, if it is the latter i'm curious in knowing from where did you get them from?

On the contrary, I don't recall anyone stating Sydney is less preferable though, but I hear Canberra and Adelaide or Perth often being mentioned for obvious reasons.

But I'd support the notion of UNSW as a main choice if you're coming to Australia.
*
well it may be true that no one here has ever mentioned Sydney being the less preferable choice, however you cant deny the fact that Malaysian students still for some reasons, prefer Melbourne over Sydney. Indeed i dont have any official figures or stats to support my statement, thats merely based on my observation among my friends who went to Australia.

Probably because it all started with the big base of 'friends' already in Melbourne.

If you have no friends already existing in Australia, that eliminates that factor when choosing universities giving you the option of judging without bias.

All the better, eh?
*
i won't disagree on that point you have made, however i would say it is more likely because of the lack of publicity of universities in Sydney with the exception of UTS in Malaysia, just ask any of the students in college right now, it's not surprising to know that some of them have never heard of UNSW or Usyd but they are well aware of unis in melb such as UniMelb, Monash, RMIT etc..

If you are capable of going into the Go8 universities, i would encourage you to do so rather than going to UniSA or any other non-Go8 for that matter. There are reasons as to why Go8 universities generally do not participate in twinning programs with local colleges/private unis though I am not the best person to tell you why, but the few previous posts should have already given you a pretty clear point of view regarding the unis in different tiers.

Not necessary, the TER requirement set by the universities in australia is actually based on demand for their courses, the higher the demand the higher the requirement, a best example is the TER requirement for a Bach.Commerce in ANU. The requirement was around 80 when i last checked, which is honestly low for a commerce degree in the Go8 universities where the average requirement is around 88-90, but this doesn't mean that ANU is inferior compared to the others, it is in fact one of the top universities here in australia, but people don't fancy going to Canberra to study, hence the low demand for its courses and the low TER requirement as well.

ya i caculated..
after geting a job in Aud approx aud$30k /yr.. work for 1.5yr back there then can cover your entire 2 yr diploma education debt

But if you come back to malaysia you be working like HELL!  sweat.gif  sweat.gif
for 10 yrs or so.

so do not come back to KL after yor visa expires ..haha  biggrin.gif
Well i guess you didn't include the cost of living in Australia while you are earning that $30k/yr job into your calculation not to mention the tax you are gonna pay as well, after all expenses taken into account, i doubt you would even have one-third of that $30k left in your pocket at the end of the year unless you are spending really thriftily..

p/s: the above mentioned is based on large cities like Sydney and Melbourne.

Bus fares being reduced? Do such things exist?

Here in QLD we are facing a nice hike in bus fares. After the increased it last year. Damnit man, they use natural gas. I don't they are affected THAT much!

But yeah, QLD, SA, WA TAS are the few states which give concession fares to intl students. Sometimes this fact alone makes me happy I'm not in VIC.
No concession fares for intl students in NSW?!
*
Nope, NSW and VIC are the only two states as far as i know that don't give concession to intl students.

lol..thx....wen pay out the contract it wil cost a lot rite compare to stickin to the plan 4 2 yrs???

lol....its like paying installements with benefits..
*
Hmm it depends, i'm not sure about other operators, but i reckon they should be more or less the same. For 3's 29 cap, theres a minimum charge of $20 every month even if you are not using it, and based on my understanding from the contract, you are required to pay that minimum charge for 24 months, or in another word, you'd have to pay that amount multiplied by the number of months left in your contract if you ever decide to cancel it earlier.

The maximum number of hours you can work with a student visa here in Australia is 20 hours during session and full time during semester break. Having that said, expect your earnings from part time job to cover about 30-40% of your expenses(not based on my experience, quoted this from someone here, scroll back to look for more details as i believe it has been discussed quite intensively), and not to mention it'd be unhealthy to work the maximum 20 hours allowed during session as that would prolly affect your studies which is not something your sponsors aka parents want to see.

is that true malaysian hall in australia is only for malays???

note: not raising a racism topic here, just wanna be prepared for another alternatives in my staying application.
*
I don't know if there's any Malaysian Hall in other states, i'm talking about the one in Sydney. As far as i know, my friend who's not a bumi had lived there when she first arrive, though she didn't stay long as that was merely a temporary accommodation for her. But take note that you can only stay there for a limited period of time afaik, i heard its either 1 semester or 1 year, but don't take my words for it, better check with them yourself.
