QUOTE(QuackSilver @ Sep 12 2006, 05:13 PM) well in order to work in Australia whilst studying, you need to apply for a student visa with work permit. ic..seems like quite a lot of work just to get d visa...so will i have to renew it every year? or will it last for my whole degree period?...thxin order to get one, you'll need to wait till your uni is in session. once the semester starts, you could apply for a student visa either online or through the old fashion way which is going to the immigration office and wait your ass off when uni is in session, just inform the uni that you would like to apply for a work permit. if you would like to do this online, they'll shoot off a letter to the immigration office. then an hour later, you can go to the immigration website and apply through there. the work permit for now is AUSD 60, be sure to have a credit card ready. once you finish filling in the form, wait for 1/2 hour, your application would have most probably been approved by then (yes i got mine approved after 30 minutes). by then you would have received the email that would be considered as your student visa with work permission. next thing to do is to head down to the immigration office and get your passport labeled with a visa label. if you would like to do it the old fashion way, you need a letter from uni. then you need to head down to the immigration office and apply there. whole process might take up to a month about the jobs, well initially it can be quite hard to look for jobs (i'm speaking from my own experience here in Brissy). i got my current job from a friend of mine (networking with the right people at the right place |

QUOTE(xng @ Jan 27 2007, 12:53 PM) Does anybody know whether it is better to book accomodation now before we go to australia or wait till we arrive in australia ? well are u a new international student? if yes, then i believe ur uni will have a airport reception and temporary accomodation ( mayb up to 2 weeks) .then during ur orientation week find some friends to stay together by renting outside/ find room vacancy at notice boards etc..i recommend renting outside since its way cheaper than on-campus...well the choice is still up to u..if u have the $$ then oncampus will be fine as wellWill it be fully booked by then ? Around mid feb 2007. |

QUOTE(MariMo @ Mar 11 2007, 08:49 PM) I am making a choice now wether to leave for aussies or UK... it s like aussie is a 2nd home of msia especially melbourne aussie is fine...i like it becoz i dont really like big big changes to my lifestyle...it is very easy to adapt to the lifestyle here...u dont feel very alienated...i mean u'd still feel very close to home as there are many asians around but u still get to mix with lots of angmohs as well. ..and the weather here suits me malaysian easily...i mean its has lots of sun, beaches and it doesnt get too cold during winter.anyway i think both countries are just great the way there are. |

Again, it all depends on where you go and where you live. I'm happy here in Brisbane. The weather, barring last week, is not too different from malaysia. nice and sunny! There are hot periods, and the air is dry, but on the whole its very pleasant.
Then there is the issue on where you stay. I'm staying in a very student, mixed suburb, so its foriegn, but a new experience. "Asian" areas (like Sunnybanks) can provide a small taste of home. But it has its drawbacks. i know some people here who have been here for 3 years and their English is still terrible! Cost is another factor. Australia will be cheaper in terms of cost of living (after currency conversation) compared to the UK, by and large (sydney and to a certain extent, Melbroune is a exception). Are there any malaysians in Brisbane? There seems to be a lack of them here! [/quote] yup im staying at Brisbane too.....studying at UQ St.Lucia campus but im living at indooroopilly...i just love the city view at nite as u drive along the river...gorgeous |

QUOTE(haya @ Mar 18 2007, 07:18 AM) WOW!!!What a location! Anymore room in yr place? well UQ seems large enough to me....ok maybe i havent been to any public uni in malaysia...but when u're late to class and ur lecture is held at one end of the campus u'll think its really large....i think thats because of the lakes and fields that makes the area large..not really the lecture buildings..and btw UQ has 21 tennis courts ( the largest in Queensland) and i really like the standstone buildings in UQ..looks classy...me and my fren is always having a UQ Vs QUT debate as in which uni rocks..hehe..I could use the citycat to get to uni, but usually I use the bus. Since the buses use the southen busway, its quite fast. Bypass all the jams and traffic lights! Usually I either stop at south bank and walk via the goodwill bridge, or terminate just outside the library at Queens square and walk down to QUT. Hows UQ like? Still havent been to many places. Friends all recommend me to go to SUnnybanks to get some chinese food, but I'm still finding my way around. Got lost trying to find myself to Garden City the other day, believe it or not. |

QUOTE(QuackSilver @ Mar 19 2007, 06:40 AM) well there's only one lake in uni and that's at the end where no lecture buildings are at. its the playing fields that's killing people. 8 of them dotted around campus ooopss...yep its lake not lakes...typo error.. UQ looks "ancient" inside? heh absolutely not shabby though... just having 1 lecture there per week.those sandstone building's classy looks is one thing, but they look ancient on the inside heh well QUT rocks in a way that Treasury is just next door |

QUOTE(QuackSilver @ Mar 19 2007, 11:21 PM) well if you want to compare those buildings with say, Hawken building (building 50) or say Sir James Foot building (47A), then yes, its so much more ancient haha yea hawken building is kinda ancient old looking but somehow i kinda like the way it it...seems to give me a factory/plant feeling (erm not really sure how to describe)...well its an engineering buiding and it kinda suits...if a bussiness or law faculty then sure it looks kinda weird.and did i mention about Wordsmith having the best chips in uni? btw...where Wordsmith? Damn Aussy vs NZ match. They nicked all the buses to send the people to the Suncorp stadium and cancelled and/or dealyed heaps of services! I was left waiting for 30 mins when 3 buses should have came! This post has been edited by coolgirl_y2k1: Apr 21 2007, 11:57 PM |
