from my testing so far

1. the gui is more cleaner. especially after editing the start tiles, it's doesn't look bad at all.

2. program apps like medic player classic on the top, and the lining makes it look more modern looking.

3. tabbed tasks open and minimize much smoother. i use a samsung 850 pro ssd, so it could also be due to that, but it feels like the animation seems to pay off as well.

4. task view gives you a tile window to show you much clearer all your current background tasks, so you can select them easily. otherwise all the tasks in the bottom bar, if you have too many will be too squished up. so the task view is a godsend.

5. edge aka spartan. this browser is quite fast even compared to chrome. i however did not see any sort of extensions that i'm use to with chrome. maybe their in the webstore, i haven't checked. but as a bare bones browser seems quite capable. but until there is some reliable extensions like umatrix, ublock to handle the spam online, i don't i'd use it.

6. i updated drivers, but oddly it's still saying nvidia drivers need updating. so i had to download microsofts tool that would allow me to skip/hide certain updates. this is needed because it wouldn't let me selectively pick updates otherwise. i don't want to install nvidia drivers when i know for a fact it's already installed and is the latest ^^;

7. though i updated via windows, some of my drivers were out dated. so i updated using IOBITS driver booster. so basically windows as per usual will install standard drivers which just work. but these aren't always the most latest drivers. So use iobits driver booster if you want to ensure your using the latest.

8. what bothers me the most about windows 10 is cortana. to use it, it asks for your location, your browsing habits etc etc... all info that will be sent to microsoft ..... not sure that i'm comfortable with that. i don't do anything fishy online but still i don't like big brother watching over my shoulder either. same reason i don't actively use facebook because i rather not do the data entry for big brother and con artists tongue.gif lel...

9. when i click start > settings i couldn't locate the nvidia control panel. you have to instead right click start menu and access control panel that way. guess thats the only way to reach it. so i added a tile shortcut to start menu for control panel :}

10. what i love best is the startmenu after edited. you can easily access apps compared to 8.1

11. file explorer default to using quick access. so i usually end up manually selecting my pc, and doing search for a file from there. just an extra step doh.gif

12. i'd adjust wifi sense. i rather not connect to anything auto without me explicitly connecting manually myself doh.gif

13. instead of using the default windows firewall, i use windows firewall control. it's an app that is easier to manage which empowers the default firewall app.

14. windows defender i replaced with eset nod32 anti virus.

15. anti malware i use mbam

16. gaming works. i tested hearthstone so far doh.gif but i reckon most modern games are not gonna have issues with windows 10. doesn't feel like this is anything like the disaster known as vista doh.gif

17. no blue bsods. seems rock steady flex.gif

summary:

overall they just refined the OS to make it cleaner, modern and snappier. Some new stuff like cortana, support for biometrics, directx 12 and their new browser edge.

Other than that there not really much. No new filesystem to fix bit rot :{

Maybe there is some enterprise usage to entice corporations to use windows 10. But i didn't really look much into that, but i would suspect they must have done something for that doh.gif

bottomline nothing earthshattering, but i don't see any reason not to use windows 10 especially if you have a legit win 7/8/8.1 which essentially is a free upgrade to win10.

You need to upgrade from your current 7/8.1 first only can do clean installation. Windows 10 uses different authentication method, MS will remember your hardware ID now instead of key, so by upgrading from your genuine 7/8.1, your OS generates a hardware report which consists of your hardware ID and this will be sent to MS server, so next time when you do clean install, you don't have to insert any key, it will auto activate by itself.

Suppose u should do upgrade first then clean install. I do use this way to clean install setting>update&security>recovery>reset this pc>get started>remove everything.

i thought upgrade followed by reset this pc is sufficient for a clean reinstall.

for me i used the usb flash method, so during process i can opt to format my hard drive. so i did that then just install windows 10 on c drive which was quick formated smile.gif

Anybody successfully upgraded with the GWX/reservation method? I am still waiting for the prompt. Too lazy to download ISO since I know the files are already there. Maybe I should just sleep first.....

Any fellow software developer who move to w10? I see my pc downloading the windows.bt silently now (reaching 4 gb now) and see if the following program works?

oracle 10g (xe or enterprise) - im running enterprise
mysql
CA Harvest
Ruby / rails (don't know if it have any issues)
java & jdks
jprofiler
wireshark

Other productivity tools that might be affected
Stardock bins
QTtabbar

Might get another 2.5hdd and mirror it first before installing the w10.
