Rome Total War still does not work (needing directx9 or something). Not that I play the game much anyway but having created mods for that game I may have to check from time to time.

Medieval 2 surprisingly works to had few crashes here and there.. All newer games (Shogun 2 until Attila) works flawlessly though I have to re0verify the game cache on Steam every time windows have those big updates (change build).

imo it's common that some games don't work while some do. however i believe everything will settle down a few months after ga release.

os previews are moving targets. testing stuff with it just give you rough ideas on what could be problematic (but those problems might come and go, and then come again).

still a few days to ga release. i will do a clean install after that date to see if the activation will work or not. from what i have read, some guys have tested that when you do upgrade with a fresh 8.1 via offline, you don't need to install all windows updates. all it matters is the windows is activated. internet connectivity is key to successful activation.

There's a work around at this moment from what I've read on TWC forum is that to reinstall directx9 latest package while using win7 before upgrading to win10 but that's something I'm not prepared to do. smile.gif In any case I'm probably going to get a new pc once the skylake becomes available (and I can affor it) so I'll let my current pc use win7 while that new one use win10. This pc also needs good spring cleaning so I may get an SSD and do clean installation anyway.

From now I will continue using win10. smile.gif

So what will; happen on the 29th ? Will we have to do reinstall or can just continue with whatever version we're using now ?

nice smile.gif

i think there is no need to reinstall. it's windows as a service. i guess what's in ga release on july 29 might be the same build 10240 with all cumulative updates.

hehe it was reported that on that day users will get the 10240.16384 files, and an additional day-one patch (kb3074683) to make it to 16405. i guess that's it for ga release.

Where can we check what version we have now since there's no more watermark on the desktop ?

One other thing, let's say after Win10 officially release and I got a new SSD as bootdisk and need a new installation. Do I need to install windows7 first then upgrade to windows10 or I can just use windows10 isntaller (if there's any) and use my windows7 keys to activate ?

the closest is maybe to use regedit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\BuildLabEx

currently the latest that i have is 10240.16393.amd64fre.th1_st1.150717-1719. however, things might be different this time around. waas will push updates (replacing only certain files) and sometimes it doesn't get reflected in registry also. (e.g. now explorer.exe is actually 10240.16405)

the free upgrade offer is about using legit windows to perform upgrade. once it's activated online, you can do a clean w10 install after that. the safer route that you should do is don't do upgrade first. when you have the new ssd, do a clean w7 install on it, activate it, then do upgrade. from what i have read, you don't need to install complete windows updates before performing the upgrade. all it matters is the old os gets activated.

afaik there is nothing concrete about replacement hardware yet. ms's definition of 'same device' is still unclear. previously we know that it's mobo, but in the license agreement of w10, even a hardware partition is considered a device.

Noob question. Do you guys recommend a netbook with an Atom Processor and 1GB RAM to upgrade to Win 10? Originally with Win 7. Win 10 should be less resource hogging right? It's eligible for upgrade with files already downloading.. Tried upgrading the RAM but seems it is not compatible with other than the 1GB stick. sweat.gif

you can proceed, but bear in mind that it will be a long process due to limited system resources.

the machine that i ran upgrade previously was a laptop with freshly activate w8.1, i7 4702hq, 16gb ram, and a full ssd setup. it took about half an hour to complete the process iinm.

maybe you should reboot the computer and let it try again.

nice.

my desktop rig downloaded the upgrade files but it's stuck at 2 files which were labelled .tmp in $windows.~bt/sources. left it overnight, still the same. i will check it out later. i have a system image created just prior to upgrade, so i can revert to it if anything bad happens.

for free upgrade offer: do upgrade and make sure w10 is activated online, then do w10 clean install.
