I'm not an expert, just had the experience to perform clean win 7 installation on about 10 PC/ laptop. But sorry I think I'm too dumb I can't understand your guide.

Since C:\ partition will be formatted for a clean install, why should Win 7 or 8.1 still need to perform upgrade before format?

If the win 7 is already activated the first day I bought the laptop, isn't it consider official activation already?

logically thinking, u cant use key for win 7 on win 10.. is it?

thus..

win 10 need key from win7/8.1(upgrade) > convert that key to win 10 key > stored into server

then only u can clean install

u cannot turn off windows update in windows 10. But can turn off "choose how updates are delivered" via "advance option" in windows update to prevent stealing of some kind of P2P bandwidth

Currently there is the only safe way to get activated windows. After the upgrade process, Microsoft will register your hardisk OS and provide you with activated key & windows will stated activated. Only than, it is safe to perform clean install by skipping those key that required. You are no need to know what the key is it actually if the win 7 is already activated

Really no way to turn off the updates? Then all those guide are fake? If really no way to disable updates, then I should roll back to win8.1. Coz I will be starrting my tertiary studies soon, not convenient to update in the future...

If I am insider preview user, already updated my windows 10 to final build and its activated. Can I clean install windows 10 and get it activated too by just logging in with my insider id?

That makes sense too. What about this?
- Format my current win 7 and clean install win 7,
- Install all the drivers.
- Activate genuine win 7 key, then run windows update to latest win 7 SP1.
- UPGRADE to win 10 using the win 10 iso that I downloaded using media creation tool.

I know it is double the work but logically the activation should be successful, right?

gpedit.msc is not available in anything below w10 pro. officially there is no way to turn wu off. unofficially there are workarounds, but no guarantee that they will work forever. it's better for you to revert to 8.1 to gain more controls.

these are good features, but to implement without user control is really a turn-off.

yes you can do that. i did that because i wanna cut short time for the upgrade to scan for software compatibility issues.

in my case (w8.1), i didn't bother to do windows updates. once drivers were installed, i activated the os online, and proceeded directly to upgrade using bootable usb created from iso. it worked for me.

Hi...
I'm in a bit of a dilemma right now.
Just have Windows 10 setup file downloaded. Now it's asking me to either upgrade now or choose a time within the next 3 days. My bf strongly encouraged me to do the upgrade since his brother got the Insider build and has no issue with it. But my own brother advises me against it - he said one of his friends tried to get a force update and have his computer corrupted instead.

So should I upgrade now? Later? Or?
If I do upgrade, should I do clean install or just update? I have no problem about installing the softwares back after a clean install, but I already lost my driver software and such... If I do clean install, would I need to insert driver CDs (which I don't have)?

Thanks in advance in replying =)

Any suggestion form all the bros here?

I have 2 PC. An Acer laptop running Win 7 and Surface Pro 3 running Win 8.1.

Acer was upgraded to Win 10 unsing the Media Creation Tool by using the Upgrade this PC mode. Successfully upgraded to Win 10 after changing the language to English (US). Thereafter, factory reset to remove everything to have a clean install. Successful, everything working fine.

Next, upgrade my Pro 3 by the windows updates. No problem. Everthing working fine included Wifi, audio, Chrome and player.

Wanted to do a factory reset by Recovery, but when I choose either of the options there, the pop out window indicate I need a installation CD. When I choose revert back to Win 8.1 (within 30 days), message said the recovery file have been deleted.

How do I go about it if I want to reset my PRO 3 to have a clean install of Win 10?

Well this is c**p! My younger brother's pc's motherboard failed after successfully activating Windows 10. LUCKILY I have a spare motherboard to use. UNLUCKILY the license of the Windows 10 was tied to the broken motherboard... hence, I can no longer activate Windows 10 on my younger brother's pc. Do we have to get the same motherboard again to re-activate Windows 10? Or all is lost and time to revert to trusty old 8.1?

Called Microsoft customer service to deactivate the key with the current rig......share your concern to them., doable, you dont have to buy the same mainboard..

w10 upgrade, if followed correctly, should be relatively seamless. about forced upgrade, know that we all have different hardware and software in our systems. some are fine if you do it, but some are bad. that's why forced upgrade is never recommended, because when you do that you just increase the potential risks to fail. however if you know what you're doing and prepare for the worst, nothing bad will happen even if the upgrade failed. no matter what you do, make a full backup of your system and data before upgrade.

whether to upgrade or not, it's really up to you. you might wanna take the time to read about w10. there are features that some users find them hard to swallow and eventually revert to original os. (read previous posts for details and comments)

the free upgrade offer starts with upgrading an activated os when it's connected to the internet. the whole process will not ask you for key. once you have confirmed the new os is activated online, you can proceed with a clean install. just skip to next when you're asked for a key.

a direct clean install of w10 will not get activated with old key.

about drivers, it's best to look for compatible drivers (as complete as possible), download them before upgrade, just in case. usually you can find the latest drivers from manufacturers' websites.

what's the brand of your laptop? a factory reset from stock factory image usually will activate automatically. if it doesn't work, try phone activation. at administrative command prompt type slui 4 and follow the instructions.
