So does that means i need to :

a) install windows 8.1, activate it with license key, then install windows 10 over it or
b) straight install windows 10 pro

but i don't know if the license key of 8.1 works on the Windows 10 installation boot-able disc on a new hdd...
*
Install windows 8.1,activate and upgrade is the usual way, however it leave Windows.old unless you do a cleanup. So usualy i would do this first then fresh install to avoid upgrade only problem.

The key of 8.1 won't direct work on windows 10,they detect by hardware id now so if you had done upgrade one your motherboard will be able to active the first install after you connect to the internet.

u need to re-activate win81 before upgrading to win10

this works if i upgrade my motherboard or hdd within a year of the free upgrade offer.

what i mean is after the offer.

as far as I know, my windows 10 is licensed which it's license key was carried over from 8.1. it's window 10 license now.

Yes, i have done it...

it was like this :

Windows 8.1 Pro > upgrade to Windows 10 > Reset this pc ( Keep nothing ) > Fresh Windows 10

and when i reconnect to internet, i check This PC Properties, it atomically activated which is nice.

and it also give my computer a special name, which i probably leave it as it is, cause i scare if i change the name, my windows 10 will become non-activated....

from your second paragraph, you mean i can still activate if i change motherboard?

okay let make things easier to understand

1. you can't clean install windows 10 because you need the cd key for windows 10, not windows 7 / 8.1, unless you upgrade to windows 10 either windows update / ISO 1st
2. once you upgrade and activated, you can do clean install whenever you want (but let's say you change motherboard, might need to contact customer service) in order to activate, if add on like RAM, ssd, hdd should be no issue (correct me if I'm wrong)
3. for the name I don't think is related

after some readings, i think it's clearer now about the licensing.

Does that mean they use the key from our mobo?

I don't plan on clean install. But that's what the ms tech said. I just ask, just in case.  laugh.gif
*
no it use the key from the activated os when you upgrade to w10. for instance, the stock os of my laptop is windows core oem (key embedded into bios/mobo). i removed it and installed windows 8.1 pro retail. so the base license is pro retail (hence i got w10 pro)

My Windows 10 is upgraded from Windows 8.1, and what would happend to my license if i upgrade/change a motherboard, or  processor, ram, or hdd in the future?
*
it's based on your base license (i.e. the license type of your 8.1). if it's oem, you need a new w10 key when you change mobo. if it's retail, no issues.

QUOTE(XeactorZ @ Jul 30 2015, 07:06 PM)
so I can clean install next time if I want to install windows 10 on ssd ?

yes.

right. the license terms will be 8.1 + 10.

name is not relevant in terms of licensing.

Hmm apparently not only a few people encounter this problem but it seems like a lot of users are facing it.

Try this, resetting windows socket.
Press Windows key + X then select command prompt (admin)
type and enter these inputs into the console:
netsh winsock reset

Then, restart PC. Hopefully it'll work  sweat.gif

You need to change it from "Control Panel" i.e. Control Panel > Clock, language and region. Change region location to "United States" & language to "English(United States). Refer this link if still unsure "Something Happened"

If you lazy to wait, download manually here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

But first change your region and language to US.

Try checking Asus webpage for a Windows 10 audio driver for your Laptop, else you might have to wait for a official driver.

LOL I just check apparently there is no Audio driver even for Windows 8 already for your laptop .....

http://www.asus.com/my/Notebooks_Ultrabook...pDesk_Download/

I guess you might have to find alternative way to get the audio driver working, maybe realtek page
