How to Upgrade Windows Phone 8.0 > 8.1 (OTA)
1. Check above availability for your Lumia Cyan upgrade.
2. Go to Settings > System > phone Update > Check for updates (Update avail if you are already on windows 8.0)
3. Proceed with download and install. Please be patient, upgrade usually will take 15~20 min or more depend on your Internet connection.
4. If you are already on Preview of Developers you must first revert back to 8.0 in order to upgrade 8.1.

How to Downgrade your Windows Phone 8.1 (Preview Developers User)
Make sure your phone has enough charge, and you dont lose power supply to your computer. Make sure you don’t unplug your device halfway through the flashing process.

1. Install necessary software to restore the Nokia Lumia device to Windows Phone 8.

2. Install software on Windows 7 or Windows 8.

3. Connect Nokia Lumia phone to USB with Computer.

4. Select which software version is compatible for the Lumia smartphone then Click install.

5. You will have to acknowledge that the data and content on the phone will be erased. Make a backup of phone by navigating to Settings>> backup. Also know that photos, music and apps will be wiped out in this reset process. Click that you understand then click Continue.

6. The Nokia software should now start installing and would take about 15 minutes to complete.

7. During the installation process, do not use the phone or disconnect the cable.

When the Nokia Lumia smartphone restores Windows Phone 8, you can download the Lumia Cyan update featuring the latest Windows Phone 8.1. Then, perform a hard-reset so that the operating system can offer the Restore process from the backup created in the beginning of the installation process.

have you check your messenger tone?

settings > ringtones + sound > manage app sounds > messenger

thanks for suggestion, I tried changing the tones for Messaging and Phone but it made no difference

i notice some delay when switching / opening apps, like resuming...

Just slight delay. Switching between whatsapp and metrotube constantly no lag

used to be no delay when using the official release. quite annoying. is it the problem caused by dev preview? haha

Have you try turning your phone off and on again?

always rmb cortana is beta and wp8.1.1 is a preview, none of these are final

true wp user always use beta apps, and always stays on developers preview

i had been using wp for a few years since wp7
sometime buggy beta app or preview os will make me want to revert back, but i still want the latest feature, i.e cortana

already update my lumia 520 with cyan...kinda delay , hope its geeting better

Using 925. I like Youtube videos play in-browser. But sometimes push my 1GB RAM till it force close. Notifications + action center is derivative though still useful. I don't think the design team had much choice considering the demand for it. Word Flow keyboard good too, but i usually use combination of typing and swyping. Hard to swype big words, cannot miss any letters. Transparent tiles are nice. Don't like that games show up in app list, preferred it the old way. Don't see why that change is required since you can pin games on the start screen anyway.

Actually the biggest 8.1 feature is behind the scenes. Can create windows and windows phone apps using same code and can develop simultaneously. Only need to manage UI separately.

Only problem is i don't like using windows apps on my laptop using mouse and keyboard. I also feel the apps are slow. Only 'metro' feature is use is the start screen to organize all my desktop program nicely, no more packed taskbar and start menu.

HELP!! I have a Lumia 1020 (Avaxx), and I was trying to roll it back to Windows 8 so that I could get the Cyan update. I know I should have been patient, but I wasn't. I knew that the mini USB connection on my phone was kinda quirky, and sometimes it would connect to my computer when I plugged it in and sometimes it wouldn't (Windows would tell me that it would connect and disconnect, repeatedly, and sometimes it said it didn't recognize the device.)

So while I was trying to do the recovery, it connected and disconnected, and the Nokia Recovery Tool didn't go anywhere. I was hoping that it would but after a long while, it didn't go anywhere again. (it was stuck at 0%...)

I restarted the Nokia Recovery Tool and my Phone...but the recovery tool won't pick up my phone, and my phone is stuck on the red nokia screen.

Is there anything I can do?

perhaps you should try other PC to recover?? or replace our USB cable?

yesterday i'm don't what the problem, my phone suddenly high data usage.

i received sms from maxis suddenly remaining 200mb, then i checked the status remaining 150mb ...then i fast fast reboot the phone and check back the ussd status and remaining 110mb...

before i reboot the phone, data sense also stated i left 200mb. after reboot, i check the data sense back to 600mb...

i also not sure what the heck is going on and i using dev pre wp8.1 gdr 1....

I do notice that in update 1 the data sense is not accurate
it shows 64mb remaining for my plan but, I ady got sms for mobile operator saying that I used 100% quota
maybe we should wait for Microsoft to update data sense for update 1

Somehow tried to update my Nokia 520, but it seems to be getting stuck at "checking for updates" for a very long time until the 5 minute screen time out cuts in.

sometimes it will need longer than 5 minutes
the longest time i wait is 15 mins

how to view the video on youtube in desktop mode??

Wanna leave it be at the moment to test the battery drainage.

Thank you for the reply, wow, that's a long time to wait. It's unfortunate that Windows Phone(s) doesn't have the ability to leave the screen continuously turned on without sleeping like on some Android phones. Have to manually tap the screen then.

WP have Glance Screen , glance screen background. Sadly some Lumia model no longer have glance screen.

windows phone sales is declining..

that means possibilities many developers will abandon windows phone ship are high and beta apps will remain beta forever.this worried me because i love my 925 so much and plan to upgrade my windows phone..

yes, you can adjust screen timeout to never so it stays always on

for checking updates, you wont need to keep the screen on. it can runs in background.

user are increasing, apps are increasing, app downloads are increasing

I don't think my 520 running on Lumia Black update has the glance screen, screen always on as an option is useful when you're reading or watching some long video, I personally set my androids to "always on" and "immediately lock via power button" to avoid accidental turning it on and keeping it on when I needed it.

On the 520, it seems maximum is 5 minutes, I thought it could run in the background too, but each time the screen time out and I turn it immediately back on, the process seemed to stop. Already on my 15th minute waiting for the "checking for updates" to change to anything useful, couldn't be the connection since I'm on 10mbps and had done a test download before pressing on "check for updates"

This is starting to be a little frustrating

Had actually posted on Nokia Malaysia regarding it. Last resort, backup, reset, try again.

Wow, 8.1 really have huge improvements on battery usage. During 8.0 my batt drain was 8% per hour as reported by Battery app.

After updating, it drained 10-11% because I didn't disable apps in the Battery Saver. After disabling most of them, leaving only the essentials apps to run in background, and a full charge.. I get 5% per hour (data on, LTE on) And I didn't need to soft/hard reset at all.

20 % for 11 hours on wifi, it does improve a lot

Whatsapp saved images on 8.1 will be saved in 'Other Pictures' in the Photo>Albums folder (phone), but those images are actually saved in the same 'Whatsapp' folder when viewed in Windows Explorer.

Anyone else's whatsapp facing this small bug?

Is both folder shares the same picture?

Previously it was in Saved Pictures, after an update, save to Whatsapp, then go back to Other Picture

Amber: Saved Pictures.
Black: Whatsapp.
Cyan: Other Pictures (but still in 'Whatsapp' folder when viewed in windows explorer)

Yea, just realised that.

Anyone managed to sideload their apps/games and install them via 'Install Local App' in Store? Tried a 103mb game (Despicable Me) but giving me error, also a small 7mb game update (Hypernaut) failed.

why sideload need to install again?
btw what is that 'install local app' thing? where is it in the store?

yup just update it also....

For example, your mobile data is limited and there's no wifi to connect ur phone to download an app/game or an update, but ur desktop PC can download the app manually via the windows phone store.

Then, connect ur phone to PC. Copy the downloaded app into ur phone's Download folder (there's a Download folder in ur phone now in 8.1). Now, open the Store app on ur phone and tap the '...' at the bottom, and tap the 'Install Local App'. Then, choose the app and tap install. Done!

Back in Amber/Black, you can't side load apps, especially if ur phone doesn't have an SD card slot e.g. L1020. Now in 8.1, it's possible!

rmb firmware and software version is two different thing

today's update is for 8.1 update DP
if you are on 8.1 DP you will receive 8.1 update DP when checking for update

the problem now is microsoft still havent solve the problem of updating from DP to cyan that cause bitlocker problem
even though cyan release out for your model, but if you are on DP you wont receive cyan until microsoft solve it
they are so slow

After reading through some wp forums, yeah ure right. They dont synchronize the cyan release but working on it asap.

updated to cyan last night. some bugs here and there but 1 bug haven't settled; i can send sms and receiver gets it; but i can't receive sms from anyone including sms notification from 'Mobile operator'. fak.
