Ya ke ? Melaka campus still okay. Mostly is international student who is using Mac, cause of its world wide warranty. Most Mac user do hackintosh one. Seldom see people stick to only Mac OS. Too limited liao.
People want spend on Mac we also can't do much what. Just hope when actual performance we won't regret lo.

1. academic discount for MAC which makes it really affordable (especially when you are not using RM)
2. amazing battery life which is really crucial
3. OSX and Unix/ Linux with the ability to run Windows at the same time via bootcamp
4. not everyone is a gamer
5. weight which is another thing
6. superior touchpad

my colleagues at the australian campus for comp sci all uses MAC for the above reasons.
it is an amazing machine if you get MAC Pro.

besides, internationally they have the best warranty.
try looking at Reddit, online forums, YT reviewers and every1 bashes Dell's horrible support/ quality control.
only in Msia, Dell is being glorified as the other manufacturers are doing a bad job here.

Hi all, I'm thinking to get my brother a laptop since he's in college now. He plays dota2. Which laptop can support this game at high setting and the price wise less than RM2,500 preferably. And I've look around at certain laptop, Nvidia doesnt offer GT series anymore? As per above somebody mentioned dell vostro 5480 having GT840m but seen on the website it is only GeForce 830m. Pls enlighten me and advice me thx.

Well I agree most of your point. biggrin.gif
1. I got no idea there is discount for MAC machine, I only know of Dell giving this promotion.
2. Well it is good under normal usage, when under load it is not necessary good. But most probably also around 3-5 hours right ?
3. Yes I know this. No need to rephrase it to me again smile.gif
4. I DIDN'T MENTION about gaming at all.
5. Well for me 2kg and 1.35kg is not huge different. The laptop now is mostly using aluminum unlike last time.
6. Agree
We're talking about MBA aka Macbook Air. I agree Pro is quite good, but most developers are using it is because you NEED an Apple machine to be able to develop Apps for iOS/OSX platform. You also need an Apple Developer ID. Application based developers are using it because it is a requirement for developing Apps on iOS/OSX platform. People tends to go native development (purchase mac) instead of x-platform solution like XAMARIN because in long run it will be cheaper.
If you're developing things related to server, mostly people will avoid Mac and use other stronger machine like Thinkpad or Latitude or even workstation (with Linux as OS / Windows).
When you're performing stress test or penetration test on your server or application, you definitely won't use Mac most of the time.

Well you have a strong point though. No need to argue more as different person have different perspective. Thanks for clarifying to me on the goods on Mac, I meant it smile.gif

MAC Air gives around 11 hours on normal usage and Pro would give you 7 hours.
A similar windows machine would get you around 5 hours only.

PS: http://store.apple.com/my/browse/campaigns/education_pricing apple's academic discount for msia

buying a budget laptop for normal browsing, and some office related work.

currently looking at dell inspiron 14 3000 series, the i3 model cost 1649 while pentium N3540 cost 1349.

Wondering does the 300 justify the performance or i'm just better off with the cheaper 1 since not much of heavy task will be carried on that laptop

Hi guys, would you be able to help me find a new laptop? My current one is ASUS UL80VT which I've had for 4.5 years and still working fine except that the screen is kaput, now connecting to a LCD monitor at home. Battery life after all those years is still 3 hrs, which is very good considering I never removed the battery even when fully charged.

As per thread requirements:

1. Preferred Brand: Any but preferably ASUS.
2. Budget: RM3,000 to RM3,500
3. Usage: Heavy (Work, Personal, occasionally will bring offshore)
4. Screen Size: 13 to 15 inch

Further minimum requirements
- Windows OS (Preferably Windows 7, I plan to free upgrade to 10)
- i5, 2Ghz Processor
- 8 GB RAM
- Both integrated and dedicated graphics card (Average OK)
- 500 GB SATA HDD
- Very good battery life (> 8 hrs when standby and nothing else running)

Bonus:

- Hybrid SSD (Any size)

Notes:
- I'm not looking for a gaming laptop, DoTA 2 is the most graphically intensive game I would play. I mostly play old-school / indie games.
- I plan to learn Linux OS on the side, so laptop needs to be powerful and compatible enough to run VirtualBox, VMWare e.g. Ubuntu 14.4.4 within Windows 7
- Able to smoothly run graphically-intensive software e.g. SolidWorks, MATLAB
- I thought seriously about a Mac, but VBA ActiveX macros is commonplace in my workplace and I help develop them too.
- I live in Sarawak, but am okay with max 1 month waiting period

Thanks!

Not much 13.3 laptop around that price. Only Acer v3-371 ( specs as above) fit your requirement.

You're quite demanding with that budget. You need to sacrifice some requirement if you budget is RM3500 max.
8 hours of battery life is quite impossible except MBA currently. (there is some option, but it is exceed your budget limit)
Get business grade laptop since you're more into work. The built quality is definitely worth it.
Dell Latitude, Lenovo Thinkpad or HP Elitebook.
But with RM3500 you can just get medium or low end business grade laptop. FYI, with that budget to run graphic intense software is quite impossible.
Currently I just can suggest you, get AT LEAST i7 quad core, 16GB of RAM if you're doing intense processing in MATLAB (iris recognition/data mining).
But business grade laptop with that spec doesn't come cheap. So either lower your requirement or add up your budget smile.gif
