Well I just told him there is possibly better option. XPS 13 is indeed good, especially its accessories. But with that price range, you may get inspiron (almost full spec).
Weight may be heavier, but in actual life, you hardly will notice it. 2.5kg vs 2kg is not that much different when you're using backpack.

If he is willing to sacrifice his money for the extra light weight, then it is okay for me also, go ahead smile.gif
The SSD will soon be limited if he/she is going to install stuffs for like 2 or 3 years above. I think if you're using the laptop for 2yrs above, you will surely try to install stuffs right ? And the spec won't last him too long too.

Just my opinion, you can ignore it biggrin.gif

Thanks bro..I valued your opinion...right now I'm thinking between xps13touch or ru14 pro..more prefer ru14 pro but lack of backlit keyboard

no ssd, poor battery life.
it is not just weight as build quality wise, it would be better than an Inspiron as well (there are better options than Inspiron for that price range anyways).

he don't need the extra spec for example a dedicated GPU.
the 14nm broadwell is great in better heat management and battery life as well.

128gb is sufficient if you are not gaming.
once again, storage space depend on the user.
SSD have the advantage in speed, weight and longevity over HDD.

the spec would last him a long time as he isn't gaming.
mobile computing tech isn't progressing fast in terms of performance but rather more on efficiency the past few years whereas softwares are getting more optimized especially.

I would go for the RU14pro due to the options available for you to customize to your needs and the larger battery size (though higher consumption from the processor as well).
Mobility wise (especially the size thanks to the screen design), the XPS would win but i would talk their their sales personnel to get up to 6gb of ram.

Lenovo z40-70
5th gen i5 (forgot the numbers)
4gb ram
500gb HDD.
Something gt820 with 2gb ram
Win 8.1 64bit
14 inch fhd display.
Rm1799

OK ka? Plan to use in room, hardly taken outside. Main use are just photo and video editing doing family photo albums and home movies, so photo and video editing softwares will.form the bulk of softwares inside. Only minor gaming and also watching online movies and radio streaming only.

Should I add more ram, say up to 8gb? Worth to swap the HDD to an SSD for faster photo/video processing?

Tight room space. A laptop is easily stowed away when the small table is used for something else.

I did consider a mini2 kind of cpu case but still it will require too much space (cpu, monitor, keyboard and mouse) when a laptop has smaller footprint and easily removed away.

Well Inspiron is just an example. There are obviously better option. smile.gif
I do agree. Just I got different opinion only. The heat, you won't realize any different in real life if you compare it with a 4th gen cpu (assuming you're using same laptop to compare), except you're using software to view the exact temperature.
Storage wise it depends on user. But you can't guarantee that the user won't want to play game in the future. So it is better to get larger storage capacity in case you need it. (I used up 100GB without installing any games, even steam is not installed)
XPS 13 is still using 4gb onboard RAM, I think it will soon be limited though. Cause with Windows 8.1, it already consume about 1GB - 2GB of ram. If you deactivate those services running on Windows 8.1 to save up more ram, you defeated the purpose of using Windows 8.1 then. Not to mention Windows 10 may requires similar or more since there is Cortana coming along with it.
Like I said, I'm not disagreeing with anyone. I just want to let TS know there are better option which he/she could consider also biggrin.gif

Might be ok. If its me, i will pick 15.6" screen laptop for that purpose. 14" is just too small.

SSD for storage is not really a good choice,i mean the price.. you will have limited space unless you dont mind to buy 512gb one (cheapest are Rm700-800)

btw, where did you find z40-70 with 5th gen i5?

yup this is just for discussion's sake.
nowadays, i would say 6gb ram is the minimum which i guess every laptop manufacturer would provide the upgrade option (though pricey).

a big reason to use SSD over HDD is power consumption and heat generation (which is why you see the slower RPM HDD for even gaming laptops nowadays).
for a casual user, I think a SSD would be more important than a processor (as long as it is i5 and lol-ed at the new macbook's Intel M lolx) and a minimum 4-6gb ram.

PS: My datasets for the experiments alone are 80gb, results from processing them are 30gb (sync-ed to dropbox for my workstations) without gaming. From the questioner's requirements of movie etc, 128gb SSD seems alright as generally you would want media files to be on external HDDs unless key ones.

Yea I agree. I think for general usage there is no need to be too worry about heat generation. Since you won't be doing anything intense so HDD or SSD is not a worry though. Only the speed of read/write. I personally use quite a lot of software so 128GB is definitely not enough for me.
I would still go for i7 at least since I'm willing to spend that much already. Except for the SSD, I feel that spending so much for a slim design laptop without good spec is not worth it.

P/S: Yea, I facepalm-ed at the new macbook. Now Apple is even selling the external USB-C adapter, "You want to use USB ? purchase it from us" doh.gif It is like Dell XPS 13 (not sure Dell give the accessory for free or need to purchase separately)

more processing power means lower battery life still (and would require better cooling as well).
it is always a trade-off.
SSD matters for casual users as it would affect the load speed which many general user would relate as "lag" especially when windows is doing their indexing.
for my tasks, i would require a i7 though considering most of my tasks are now ran on the grid, that is getting irrelevant now compared to longer battery life on the go.

ps: as much as I would love a SSD, the amount of fileIO i am doing would kill the SSD within 6 months.

---

XPS had multiple ports still whereas NewMAC unfortunately use the same USB-C for its power adapter as well ie 0 ports if you are plugged in.

price on the higher side but what you get is touchscreen; amazing build quality, design and mobility (small and light but average battery life).
personally, i wont spend that much but if i have the luxury? I would go for it lolx.
