QUOTE(cheaka @ Jan 15 2007, 10:49 AM) Hi, I am new to this...after reading the first page about having Sugar Glider as a pet....I decided to get one... Got it last Saturday....I think mine is the wild adult sugar glider....already cocoa brown colour....but he has been very shy on the first day i got him...hiding inside the coconut... I feed him apple...and "koa chi".... On second day, i try to touch him and feed him koa chi and apple...he takes it off from my hand...and also he is okay that i pet him and touch his tail.... But his hours very gila loh..he would sleep until 10.30pm only wake up...then only active at around 11.30pm.....he is active in the early morning at 8.00am.... I want to take him out and play but i worry that might stress him out....i put in my used t-shirt...cut out both of my sleeves and put in there...hope he will get use with it and slowly let me carry him out.... Can tell me more how you play with him? QUOTE(soggie @ Jan 18 2007, 06:34 PM) Well there's a way, but it is up to you. Just ignore his crabs. You're the boss, and after the first week you should be pulling the shots. Goto the cage, tell him straight to his face "dude, you're here for a week, and a day in my clothes, and you still don't remember me? You're not retarded so you better stop that crap." LOLThen, touch him, and don't pull away when he crabs. He'll tire after a while, and then gently stroke him, and just don't cabut when he bites or crabs. If he bites, don't pull away, just freeze. His teeth aint strong enough to break skin I guess. Wait, you did say its an adult right? This complicates matters... Give it time I guess... feed it more, spend more time with it, get bitten regularly and it'll warm up to you. Seriousy, you don't wanna consider the 9v battery treatment? Waaa.... So ganas and direct to the glider meh? My glider is also a WC fella I think. He was extremely aggressive and it took me about 8 months to tame him. When I first met my Pickles, the previous owner fed him some papaya by hand, instead of taking the papaya, Pickles bit his hand. Now I can take Pickles out with me in his pouch, but one piece of advise : This glider will not bond to you. You may be able to tame him to not bite and run around, but he will not respond to you and bond to you the way one that has bonded with you from a young age. Remember, this animal was taken from the wild and put into a cage, it would most definitely be discontented if you rush the taming process. It needs time and patience to get used to it's surroundings and most importantly, you. Talk to it everyday, make it a habit to say good morning and good night. Once the glider has become comfortable with coming out of it's pouch or house, offer it food and stroke it gently on the tail or back while it's busy eating. Later you can slowly move to stroking the head when it's used to it. Later, install a pouch into the cage and when it sleeps inside, take the pouch out with the glider and stroke it through the pouch. DO NOT attempt to take the glider outdoors before it is accustomed to being picked up or touched with your bare hands. This method is very safe and has a very high chance in taming your glider. I have not been bitten once by Pickles. soggie, this is not a dog. A dog would understand your tone, but a glider, especially a WC one, will not. YES, a glider CAN bite you till you bleed. Haha so cute... Reanne, I was just joking ler hehe.
Anyway, to share my ups and downs. When I got the sugar glider, everybody had a piece of mind to say. The breeder gave a lot of stupid advise, like, feed it baby food can already, and can feed it bread. Then people frown when I was extremely picky with everything - from cage to food. I told them that SG has a very specific diet and housing requirement, and nobody wanted to take my views as valid, saying that things I read off the internet is bullshit. I stuck with my own idea, and went out. First mistake then happened. I bought Pine bedding, and discarded it quickly. Sigh, RM20 plus gone! Then I went out again and got corn cob, because I can't find aspen. After getting it its cage, my mom started to offer strange advise - she thinks SG are similar to hamsters! She wouldn't believe that a SG needs a house perched high in the air, and lots of stuff to climb around. She kept insisting that I put them on the ground, which again I naturally ignored. I started feeding it apple sauce baby food, but after a week the male died, due to constipation I think. That was a great blow to me - I thought my handling and stubborness in following the guides online had brought his demise. But the female was doing great, and so I kept the female and ordered a new male from the same breeder. Then I started making my own Glider Mix, and I was relieved that my Kiki loved it so much that I think she's over-feeding herself on it. When the new male came, we decided to call it Rambo because it got into a fight with another SG before reaching my hands, and got two wounds on its face. It was rabid - not only crabbing, but actively attacking any finger that would approach it. It refused to eat at all, and we had to force feed it with baby food. Then I had my friend (the two of us shared the cost of owning the gliders) bring the male back to her house for 2 nights, fearing that if they were kept together Kiki would be killed by Rambo. Soon we found out that Rambo didn't wanted anything, but drank milk, and on the third day we decided to let Kiki meet Rambo. The meeting went well... in a strange way. Rambo was acting all cool and manly (he was a week younger than Kiki), but Kiki was exceptionally friendly. I guess after a week of living alone she was eager to see a mate. She climbed all over Rambo, and even went down and licked Rambo's... err... privates, and at that moment I thought, wow, she could be a great porn star in the SG world. Anyway, Rambo got bored of Kiki and went to explore the table we put them on, and found my Glider Mix... and guess what? He dived straight into it, lapping and munching on it like its the best ice cream he ever had. THat was when my mom came up and admitted that my Glider Mix (which she opposed in the beginning, claiming that the babies wouldn't touch that foul mix) is exceptionally good, and she had no problem feeding kiki with it. That moment all my doubts and fears are washed away, and I became more confident of taking care of the gliders. Yay! Anyway, tomorrow I'm gonna take Rambo to a vet - I'm afraid his wounds will develop infections, and he's a little lethargic since he met Kiki. He's a great jumper though... Rambo is funny... he's afraid of heights. If we took him higher than 1 meter off the ground, he'll start shivering and crabbing! Stupid little bugger... |

HEre's my suggestion - goto Pet Safari in IKANO, head over to the Exotic Pet Section (the one with the poor raccoon), and look at the shelf selling Quicko Sugar Glider pellets. DO NOT buy the pellets buy on the same shelf you can see a bag over there, around RM36 if not mistaken. That one should be good enough. |

Victor,
Just like I told Soggie in my post a few pages back, make them a standard mix. You can get the recipe by googling it or you can buy the mix. The when they get used to it feed them fruits and meal worms etc as well. My SGs really like the mix I make them. Soggie, Congrats on making a your babies and good mix and getting them to eat! SuiTeng, I am not sure why they are fighting but it does not seem like they are playing. They are fighting for real. But I brought them to work with me the past few days and there was no fighting! Maybe they just wanted attention? |
