Hi, I am new to this...after reading the first page about having Sugar Glider as a pet....I decided to get one...

Got it last Saturday....I think mine is the wild adult sugar glider....already cocoa brown colour....but he has been very shy on the first day i got him...hiding inside the coconut...

I feed him apple...and "koa chi"....

On second day, i try to touch him and feed him koa chi and apple...he takes it off from my hand...and also he is okay that i pet him and touch his tail....

But his hours very gila loh..he would sleep until 10.30pm only wake up...then only active at around 11.30pm.....he is active in the early morning at 8.00am....

I want to take him out and play but i worry that might stress him out....i put in my used t-shirt...cut out both of my sleeves and put in there...hope he will get use with it and slowly let me carry him out....

Can tell me more how you play with him?

to cheaka:
adult sgs are usually difficult, if not impossible to train and get used to the owner. but from what you've mentioned, it seems that the glider has been a lil accustomed to human company. use mealworms to 'bribe' your gliders on to your hand, but becareful not to feed too many, as i heard mealies are fattening, so limit about 4-6 a day. your tshirt tactic works, but use an unwanted smelly shirt will be better. have you heard of the pouch? get a small pouch made from breathable fabric and use it as housing or 'bed' for your glider. then when ur sg is sleeping in it, carry it around everywhere you go by hanging around your neck, get it accustomed to your body heat and smell.

to both:  try to vary your glider's diet, read up more on caresheets and foods which are good for them, and which are not. do your research! smile.gif

thank you so much for your advice. i actually wore the t-shirts for 2 nights during my sleep....then only cut out the sleeves and leave it in the cage now.... i will try get the mealworms and the pouch....

Where can i get the pouch and mealworms?

will keep you guys updated...anyway, here's a picture to share...of my SG...his name is Gollum

seryoung:
hahha...a long story in naming him gollum...but he still don't know his name is gollum...

i didn't have time to look for the pouch as the pet shop near my house don't sell things for pets like this... sad.gif ...so i use my black shoe bag (breathable)...i took him out the whole day yesterday .... he was okay...make some noise when i try to take him out from the cage.. he was hiding in the coconut shell.....i feed him fruits everytime i check inside the bag...he takes the red guava. i think he must be thirsty. as i noticed he never drink water from the container in the cage...i worry he might dehydrate.

do SG drink lots of water? do i have to show them where to drink the water from?

at around 9.30pm...he was getting abit active inside the bag...so i try to take him out...but he is too shy to get out until he makes that noise again....he refuse to walk to my hand or anything yet....just let me touch him and feed him....can teach me how? as i want to play with him but he is always hiding in the dark....

even at night...my house light is not very strong...but he refuse to come out the coconut shell...when i have the lights off..then he will only come out himself....how to train him on that?

@cheaka

At first, you need a lot of patience with him. Firstly, the water. Are you using waterdish or the bottle? If you use the bottle, you might need to train him a bit on how to use..

About the bag, just buy a drawstring bag from the RM5 shop. I think some forumers here can recommend where, I'm not sure where to get but I got mine from Ikano. Breathable ones will do.

Try not to use coconut shell for the first few weeks. Let him sleep on your smelly shirt for a while biggrin.gif Like this it's easier to interact with him smile.gif

Suiteng:

Thank you. I am such a lousy pet owner. I am using the waterdish. BUt the water level seem to be at the same level since the first day i got him.

I will visit the pet shop to get the bag.

As for coconut shell, can i take it out now...and just leave my shirt there.???

Nolah... everyone was a noob before. Just telling based on my experience only. Got replace the dish with fresh water everyday? If he's not drinking from the dish, perhaps he was used to bottle? What did the pet shop equip his cage with?

Just take out the shell and leave your smelly shirt in. Make sure it's enough to cover his whole body.. scare he cold cold ler...
I'm not familiar with this brand. Better check it out at the pet shop to see it's compatible or not oh...
*
Suiteng: thanks again for your guidance. I finally got him out from the coconut shell last night. Was trying to lure him out with the apple but he refuses to get out from the coconut shell, so i had no choice but to take out the coconut with him inside, the use my smelly sleeve to try to get him out. i had to tilt the coconut down then only he climb out.

I leave my whole t-shirt at one corner at the bottom of the cage with some of the cut out sleeve. he was not use to it. was hanging upside down on top of the cage.

After a few minutes, he was going around the cage, i am glad this is the first time i see him drink water from the dish and also take the "kao chi" out from the other dish too.

This morning, i was worried. Couldn't find him at all. Then realised that he really dig himself into the t-shirt. i try to see how he is...he make the noise...then i don't dare to kacau him liao. i think i stressed him out too much. so i left some banana for him.

Later today, i will try to get the drinking bottle and also the pouch. I hope things will improve..... sweat.gif

Crabbing sound ar? Hehe... patience my dear.. he's still not used to sleeping in smelly strangers T shirt tongue.gif Wait him get used to the smell lor..

Yup yup....anyway, question to ask...if i keep feeding him Apple...is it enough ah?....Because i tried giving him boiled chicken meat, boiled egg, carrot and banana. He doesn't really eat it. One bite only then he don't want liao.

When he eat apple, he will something like tasting instead. He munch munch munch only and leave some of the bits out.

How much should we actually feed them ah? Like mine, an Adult Male SG, 2 slices of Apple enough ah?

Apple tend to leave smell after that. Is it okay if i feed him pink guava? As i feel pink guava don't turn black after a while like Apple and it contain a lot of water. And sweet too.

Well there's a way, but it is up to you. Just ignore his crabs. You're the boss, and after the first week you should be pulling the shots. Goto the cage, tell him straight to his face "dude, you're here for a week, and a day in my clothes, and you still don't remember me? You're not retarded so you better stop that crap."

Then, touch him, and don't pull away when he crabs. He'll tire after a while, and then gently stroke him, and just don't cabut when he bites or crabs. If he bites, don't pull away, just freeze. His teeth aint strong enough to break skin I guess.

Wait, you did say its an adult right? This complicates matters...

Give it time I guess... feed it more, spend more time with it, get bitten regularly and it'll warm up to you.

Seriousy, you don't wanna consider the 9v battery treatment? tongue.gif

no no...no electric shock...sayang lah this cute little monster....

last night was the first time he went on me....i tried to carry him out...then he manage to get loose from my hand and climb around me...then went on top of my head...suddenly he jumps and glide...wow.....after that..he quickly go hide behind the book shelf...i carry him up...ahhaha..then he crab crab crab liao...quickly calm him down and feed him... rclxms.gif

after that...the whole night..bad mood...crabbing sound like crazy everytime i try to touch him.....

this morning...carry him out and put him on my tummy for a while before i head off to work....he seems okay ... hopefully tonight can lure him out again... wink.gif

Reanne and Soggie: Thanks for sharing your experiences with your SG. Now it really make me feels better after knowing that my SG is actually quiet tame liao. The only missing part is the bonding thing loh.

Will keep talking and putting him on my tummy for him to get used with it.

Anyway, I couldn't find the pouches that you guys were talking..I bought those hill climbing chalk bag...is it okay ah? It has a big opening and it is really really dark inside the bag.....Anyone know is it safe?

Well if you are good in sewing you can DIY actually.

As for the chalk bag, better not. HEre's my suggestion - goto Pet Safari in IKANO, head over to the Exotic Pet Section (the one with the poor raccoon), and look at the shelf selling Quicko Sugar Glider pellets. DO NOT buy the pellets buy on the same shelf you can see a bag over there, around RM36 if not mistaken. That one should be good enough.

Oh okay....i will do that this weekend when i get to go there....thanks for your quick response.....

If me, prolly spend as much as I can. I bring it to work, to shopping, to anywhere. But make sure that your pouch is safe. Occasionally stroke it once in a while. Should be fine by then, say in a few weeks. As long as he suggie knows you are the provider of food and water. They will depend on you from that time onwards.

Just wondering where else can i find the pouch...I have been to Pet Shop in midvalley, sunway pyramid, ikano and taman mayang....none of them got those pouches. The ikano pet shop said have to wait....

I want to bring him out but i can't seem to find a pouch that is suitable. I see a lot of those handphone pouches but it is too small ..... can anyone suggest where i can find one...thanks!!!

My 2nd Week with Gollum

Here's my progress so far. As my SG is an Adult Male, and i was told it will take time to tame and bond with him. So I have been taking him out in the morning before i head off to work, put him on my tummy with my smelly t-shirt, stroke him, talk to him and feed him either fruits or worms.

Then when i get back home at night, he will be still sleeping in the smelly t-shirt, and I will take him out again, put him on my tummy, stroke him, talk to him and feed him worms at a meal. And usually when he have his first few worms, he will then poo poo on me. shakehead.gif

After that i will put him back into the cage, and he will wonder around the cage. He likes to hang on the top of the cage.

At this moment, he is still very shy. He refuses to come out. If I were to take away the smelly t-shirt from him when i take him out. He will get very worried and try to search for it. Then I will have to give him back before he stressed out.

He is still not willingly to come to my hand. Only take the food from me. If i were to leave the food on my palm, he still too shy to come to get it. I have to give him.

At night, when the whole room is dark, he will dare to come down the cage and head to the container to eat the "koa chi". Hahaha....I will usually leave a slice of fruits on another tray and he will usually finish it when I get up in the morning.

Is my technique correct ah? Do i have to do anything more? I know i have to be very patient but I hope i am doing the right way.

Hey cheaka, glad there is one who own adult & in taming progress, may i know at 1st when you try to approach your SG will it bite?
*
Hi. I am not a pro on this. This thread had been very helpful in giving me tips and guidelines.

Yes. He does bite. But before I really put my hand in to grab him. On the first day, I leave him in the cage. Wherever he is holding, i will use my hand to touch his feet, his tail.

At first I had a coconut shell and he would hide in there. I will try to bring food to him and let me take it from me. Let him smell your fingers, if he bites, if hurts very badly then you move your hand out, if not...i usually just leave it there...let him think that this finger is not food..hahaha....i got bitten a few times...but i am quiet lucky..he is usually pinching...testing it out...try to bare with the pain loh...i guess....

But now I took out the coconut shell and put my smelly t-shirt in there....i was worried at first but he sort of found himself there and sleep there. As it is the only place he get to hide. rclxms.gif
