Guys,

I have a pair of peach-faced love birds which I bought separately around 6 months ago. One of them suddenly start to develop something on both side of the face. I am not sure how to explain it, something like a whole in the face. I have attached the photo.

I think its over grooming..... coz lovebirds like to preen each other, especially the face and neck area. Do monitor grooming activities..... as for a vet with avian knowledge, I only know AMC's Dr Siva and also a vet working in UPM that can treat birds.... other vets do not have any idea.

Thanks for your reply crazymouse.

I went to see Hesmael's CLinic in Kota Damansara as he treats quite variety of pets and I have seen him with parrots.

So he says it's most likely the pair is plucking/over grooming his feathers not himself. He recommended to split them if possible at to give food which is more rich with Omega Fatty oil like sunflower seeds

The erratic behaviors he thinks its most likely epilepsy and nothing much can be done to a lovebird. He recommeded to give Vitamin B supplements for birds which helps strengthening the nerves.

yup.. agreed.

thats why theyre called "love"birds cuz they just cant stop showering affection on each other.

you also can try giving them more toys so they wont get bored.

A budgie is about RM18 to Rm25... Well, last time I bought Rm18 lah and recently saw RM25.

Just google for Budgerigar Caresheets. I don't read online coz I have magazines and books that has caresheets and guides.

Keep in your room? Budgies are a bit noisy, all parrots are lah. Keeping in your room is not healthy since the bird poo can contain mold and fungus when dried. Also when it is molting season, your room may be full of down feathers on the floor.

All birds need sunlight once a while. Parrots can also be messy eaters and scatter seeds and fruit pulp on the floor.

now budgies are like rm 30-35.. the english ones? rm400

Last Thursday my 3 cute budgies flew away already, all because of my new careless absent minded maid didn't close the cage cover properly.

And then on Saturday I bought a canary back, love it so much, it sings a lot. Wow..I got poisioned by its singing voices. May be I will buy some more singing birds in future. Anybody had any experience in keeping the following singing birds:-

Red-whiskered_Bulbul - (Jambul)
Hwamei or Melodious Laughingthrush
Shama (Murai Batu)
Orienteh White-eye (Puteh)
Magpie Robin

My canary bird only like to sing when it is alone without any birds presence. So I wonder if I would to add additonal birds, should I separate them far far away from each other?

Merbok is also a singing bird, right? My friend's Merbok never sing at all. Is it normal?

Male cockatiels sing. Go youtube and see, you will fall in love with the way cockatiels can mimic.

I saw Hill Mynah in Petaling Street shop (not for sale) can talk, mimic and whistle too. Just wonder how much a Hilly Mynah worth if to compare with Cocktaoo.

Really not all Merbok sing? I always hear a lot of birds singing around my house, definitely not the same as my Canary. And always see Merbok and Mynah birds in front of my house drinking water, if they could sing, then I must try to catch them. laugh.gif

Our merbok/dove is an orphaned bird that we are keeping. Grew to like people, especially my mom and would sing. Croo coo coo croo.... nice and sweet heheheh. But my uncle told me only males sing.

Canary would sing better than merbok.

Mynah is cheaper, RM300 to Rm350 only for a baby while a cockatoo cost about RM3k to Rm5k depending on species. But hill mynahs have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years. One thing..... not all like to learn from you. From experience, my family have kept 3. Our 1st mynah was a talented one. He could mimic and sing very well. Can say

Hello
Gong Hei Fatt Choy
How much is that doggy in the window, woof woof

Then he wolf whistles, rings like our telephone, he mimics us talking on the phone too. He could call my dogs and scold them hahahh. But sadly, his life ended in 3 years coz the petshop told us to feed the wrong food. High in iron, led to kidney and liver damage.

Our 2nd one was a quiet one. Only would respond to my dad. He too also died coz we tried a natural diet. It lacked proper nutrition from pellets.
Our 3rd and current one is a mimic but he doesn't like to listen to us. He mimics us scolding, mimics the lorry back up tune, whistles a song that my dad taught our african grey..... calls out all sorts of words that are normally in conversations. Whatever we try to teach him, he won't pick up.

Cockatoos got a long lifespan.... and they are wood chewers and dusty birds hahahah. But very comical.

Hmm...looks like Mynah is really hard to maintain. But sound interesting. Cockatoo is also too expensive for a beginner like me, looks like tamed Cockatiel fits my budget and much easier to maintain.

Yah... Mynah, need a diet of fruits that are low in iron and also mynah pellets that's sold at petshops. They are kinda dirty, the poo is really not what beginners might like to clean up after hahahah.

Cockatiels, males especially are very comical and talented birds. Females do make good pets but they lack in the singing voice.

To keep a Cockatiel, need to apply license or not? Usually when people apply licence is for one bird one licence or one licence to cover all birds?
