jus give them a call now.. i think they have the stock but dont wan to let public to know .. haha

oh ya

better be fast, who knows your favourite color, speed or anything grabbed by someone else..

Brompton is not like other brands. it is handmade and required at least 3 months to order..

Plus, distributor wont order jus 1 or 2 brompton at a time.. probably one year order once, depending on demand..

this time round, i think they are ordering more than 100 bromptons (one kontena) as some will be distributed to the dealers..

which would u recommend for the Boardwalk D8? say if i source a shifter thru taobao, etc.. can a novice like myself change it by referring to guides/instructions.. or do i need to get it done by an "expert" just to be sure?

Hi, you are already getting advice from the expert, Sifu Etigge. No need for 2nd opinion. You only need to get him to agree to perform the 'operation' on your bike for you. tongue.gif

Want to buy a foldable bike - checked out rodalink and they had dahon, tern and lerun. they handed me a tern brochure and the bike's all look the same - but the price seems a bit expensive for dahon and tern.

I did an online research and realised there are even more brands - lerun, trinx, giant, ori, hasa, birdy, java, doppleganger, volcano - how do I pick?!

- The person riding won't be very tall - around 5 feet and a female
- just starting out and wants to ride for recreation and exercise but wants to explore more things
- wants the bike to be portable and to fit in the boot of her myvi
- obviously the most affordable but then it depends - if it rides well, then the person will want to ride more and if it doesn't ride as well, then they will ride it less
- riding on roads and maybe slight terrain
- easy to fold
- light
- portable - may want to take it on travels

How do I pick? What do you suggest?

Hi, if you find Dahon and Tern to be a bit expensive then Brompton will be expensive for you. Brompton look is classic. Like it or hate it. tongue.gif

I have an 8 speed Shimano Alivio trigger shifter which is suitable for your Boardwalk. If you are interested, PM me. I can install it for you. You just need to pay for the shifter only and make sure you buy another set of handlebar grip.

A fellow rider bought this MIT folding bike which resembles a Brompton but it is not a Brompton. It's sold in Singapore for S$1699 but this one is brought in from Thailand which cost less, RM2700 after conversion. Although there are some flaws, it can be remedied, that's why it was brought to me. I improve on the rear latch so it will latch properly and release properly, else it was falling off everytime the bike is carried! rclxub.gif

Also it has been modded to 16 speed already, using 55T/44T chainrings while the rear is modded to Shimano Tiagra RD. Originally it came with grip shift which the riders says is spraining his palm twisting it. Like the Brommie, the wheels are smaller.

It folds real small like a Brompton but I can't fold it now as he has put too many items on his handlebar tongue.gif

You can get a Brommie from Hong Kong for a little over RM4K. Here in Malaysia, so far the usual models are the top end model which is 6 speed and it's almost 7K. Bear in mind though, it's a bike where you either like it or hate it and this is why Brommie riders tend to group to themselves although they do join others for rides. Many says they are snobbish, hahaha but not my few fellow riders. Just that we don't comment on other rider's ride, be it a Trinx or an Alex Moulton. We just ride together. Sometimes I hear them complaining about parts and servicing though and also their tires and tubes are always out of stock! rclxub.gif

i know the owner. Haha.

Always ask yourself, how often you fold your bike.

Like myself, i fold and unfold everyday because i cycle it to work, and carry up to the office with current ugo. The best part is happen in the life. My Ugo takes up 3 people standing space. lols.

I know some people who owned a brompton for several reasons

1. Retired person : has money (pension/kwsp) to buy expensive brompton because it folds better
2. Young person : for easy commute together with LRT for work and leisure
3. Adult 25 to 35 : buy because of collection and jus want something different because it is handmade
4. Normal person : can be any reasons...

it is like having a ferrari but no much workshop can service it in Malaysia. Spare parts might be an issue.

Some might afford to buy but may not well verse in doing self-servicing. So i go to learn how to do it, at least the basic one.

No doubt you can get from HK and UK cheaper after you get the VAT refund, if you can claim the VAT. Either you are going there coincidentally for business trip or holiday, then it is good idea to get one. But purposely fly there, doh.gif haha

nevertheless, this is what i found from Brompton Support:

QUOTE
We only sell our bikes through specialist bicycle retailers, partly because we believe that there is no substitute for proper advice at the point of sale, but also because we consider it essential that our bikes are properly serviced by qualified mechanics. The maintenance needs of a Brompton are much the same as those of any conventional, fixed-frame bike.

Every Brompton dealer should carry a minimum complement of spare parts and be able to handle most of the servicing that a Brompton may require over the course of its working life. Very occasionally, repairs or servicing may be required that are beyond the facilities of a typical dealership; nevertheless, such off-site work will be arranged through the dealer as well.

We cannot accept delivery of bicycles for servicing direct from the public, even for substantial repairs or warranty claims. By handling relations with the public, our dealers allow us to focus on our manufacturing operations while offering the public the best service possible.

QUOTE
Certain items on any bicycle take time to bed in; to avoid damage, these need attention soon after you have bought the bike. The dealer that sold you your bike will be happy to perform this first important service without charge, however, it must be redeemed within three months of purchase; they will pay particular attention to the following items:

-Spokes The tension of the spokes should be checked and adjustments made to suit. If a spoke becomes loose for any reason, neighbouring spokes will be carrying extra load and may fail.
-Crank Axle Bolts & Pedals These must be checked for tightness. The correct torque is 30NM (the thread for the LH pedal is left hand). If these items work loose, the aluminium cranks will almost certainly become irretrievably damaged.
-Cables Although the cables are pre-stretched, inevitably there is further initial stretch. As this affects hub-gear control, the gears should be checked for correct adjustment. It's well worth setting the brakes at the same time.

Source : https://brompton.zendesk.com/entries/216978...00-mile-service

This can be a good reason why it is better to buy locally. Anything goes wrong within 3 months, you can get the dealer to repair without charge. Or you prefer to send to HK where you got it from? wub.gif

Brompton comes with reputation (honoured with 2 Queen's award), i hope the dealers wont screw up their reputation.. haha
