It's actually 111 pages.. You know why? Cuz people took time out of their busy schedules to VOLUNTEER information & opinions about everything related to Android boxes.. The least you can do as a newbie is to go through the publicly available information.. The answers (and more) to every single question you asked is only a few clicks away.. Once again, use the search feature, grab a cup of (insert favorite drink) and get cracking..
*
Of course I know why.
If you have a look at my join date, I joined before you guys. Every thread used to serve its purpose as a place for contributors to volunteer information and also as a place to chat, unless that has changed.

I've contributed my own and helped out other users, sometimes even through PMs. While I may know a lot in my own areas of interest, I don't have the same amount of knowledge in others such as this. We used to be able to pop in another thread, skim through the last few pages, ask a quick question if we couldn't find the answer and get a proper response. And we would reciprocate it for others. ESPECIALLY threads such as these where our budgets differ and newer models are constantly being pushed out.

Of course if all this has changed and we're just expected to read through the thread, then I'll make sure to remember that.

I mainly use kodi , play media from my hdd , youtube , no games. So normal any android box is good to go right ? I see many went for higher end box like himedia and neo u1 which is priced around 500 600 compare to some like 200 m8s mini .
Real life usage any difference ? Apart from the 8Gb and 16GB storage.

The question is "How well"? You need to think of it as buying a car.. All cars can drive from point A to point B, yet each model does it differently and offers "perks" than the other models. So you need to analyze thy requirements.. For example,
*Budget?
*What type of files do you intend to play?
*Video & audio formats?
*Do you care about HD audio passthrough tech? etc...

So you see, it's all about performance and since Kodi is part of your requirements, it's be wise to get a box proven to handle Kodi smoothly.. The average Android box today can handle playback of simple mp4 or mkv files.. Then there's hardware & software compatibility, device build quality, stays cool despite being heavily used for hours etc.. Also, after sales support.. For example, the Minix team stand by their products, providing warranty, firmware updates for their boxes, introducing features, fixing bugs etc.. Hence the "premium" cost & why a few don't mind coughing up the extra cash.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, as Age =/= maturity.. As someone who claims to know how a or this forum works... Lacking... Try having to answer the same question over and over again... Week after week, see how you like that.. I get PMs too and I respond accordingly, especially when the messenger has taken some time out to at the very minimum, familiarize themselves with how things work.. Besides, the spoonfeeding model has been tested and tried.. It failed. Cuz newbies fail to do that important thing.. "Research".. Cases where a box or boxes were bought and doesn't live up to expectations, (I.e. Netflix beyond 480p resolution, unstable IPTV services, performance issues, etc) only for them to run complaining to the seller as if it's the seller's fault they didn't do their homework.. Some even return and complain on the forums, that they wasted money.. Bla bla.. So the "Read First and Questions Later" model was introduced..

Something made you pop the questions as opposed to just heading out and purchasing the first box that shows up... I'm fairly certain that said "something", would not be adverse to entering keywords like "Netflix" or "MINIX Neo U1" or "Parents" or "Kodi", etc into the search bar below and skimming through the resulting posts.

Any recommendation for TV Box that is around RM150 - RM200?

Wanna buy a cheap TV box for playing 1080p movies with KODI/XBMC. Previously tried Kodi on Raspberry Pi 2 and it can barely handle 1080p and it's damn slow. Have ma eyes on MXQ Pro S905 but I'm feeling that I can find something better at this price range (feeling).

Thanks!

just read the last 10 pages or so.
several people have been discussing a couple of low cost models.
there are like 100 brands and 1000 models.
u just have to choose one after reading and pondering.
just for kodi, most current specs boxes will work.
for "casual" use of kodi, it is more about your broadband speed and memory available.
only when u get into large files, 4k, h265, hd audio will higher models be required.

QUOTE(knighty @ Jul 21 2016, 11:03 PM)
For the love of god, it's a 110 page thread with the majority of posts about price of various boxes, technical questions and general stuff.
There's no proper first post/FAQ like other threads and the information is all over the damn place.
*
it will be nice if all is arranged properly.
actually this android box thread is the most complete one.
there were at least 2 others running parallel with it >2 years ago, and new ones still pop up from time to time.

the subject is very fluid, models are plenty, user requirements/budget are very varied.
apps come and go, get obsolete, get much bigger, etc... ever changing.

as to your original question, minx u1 is quite popular. if u read the thread, u will find more than a few users.

It doesn't work anymore. If you really like MKTV, you need to get Himedia M6 bundled with build-in MKTV. that is the only box bundled with MKTV.

Hi guys, newbie to android TV box here, but familiar with flashing/network stuff.

I need to get my parents an android box to run probably Kodi and maybe netflix, what box is the most recommended right now?

Looking for something around RM500-900. Don't have 4k HD right now but always good to have in case they decide to change TV.

I see this link Best android TV box recommends a minix neo U1 but most people here don't use it?
*
Short answer to your query.

so far good tv box within your budget range which are common in malaysia are Himedia and Minix. If you willing to spend more you can even get a Nvidia Shield from overseas (but it may be too much for your parents).

Basically, whichever box you getting should have no less than 16g memory in order to get kodi in better working enviroment. Since you mention netflix, please bear in mind Himedia and Minix are not approved by Netflix. so you wont be able to get HD quality offered by netflix. (but you may get SD quality)

If you dun mind cheap tv box, get something like M8s or Mxq etc. now most devices are 4k ready and with minimum 8g memory.

q10 pro is a mighty device!

for china apps, those standalone ones like Letv, youku, etc, do not work well - becos you get geoblocked from here. these are legit paid iptv services in china, with some minor free videos for non-payers.

go for aggregators like buding and vst which would have unlocked the streams that are tapped from source.

can find in shafa site (hope u read chinese).

if u had bought from a good seller, all that and more would have been pre-installed.

Precisely.. Now you've learnt about the restrictions of that particular box and by posting, you help others in the same situation to either take it up or look at another box.. Most custom made IPTV apks are hardware-locked and won't work on other devices.. Unfortunately.. While it may be viewed as counterproductive that they'd lock it down and lose potential subscribers, it's probably also due to the devs not wanting to deal with bugs arising from incompatible firmwares and hardware..

We are all learning and what we know so far is that, there's no "perfect" box.. Only the best case.. smile.gif

Since you have a Q10 Pro, interested to know more on the HDR and 10 bits colour.

Are the HDR and 10 bits colour only in theory or something you can easily notice on the TV screen? Hope it is the later.

I guess it also depends on the video signal. It cannot give a better picture than what was recorded. Or can it?

Thanks.

Couldn't agree more rclxms.gif Watch heavily in Kodi & stand alone apps for 5-6 hours straight, the device stays cool and no heating at all. Thanks to the aluminum case & build-in fans! I barely hear the noise too.

Yup, i have those apps running in my device. Just want to have more selection of choices. But to think of them, 2-3 reliable apps is actually good enough rather than having so many apps installed but end up restricted. Can save some storage out of it.

Currently, my fav combo for chinese contents : dianshimao + HDP. Best.
