Got to know about android TV box after setting up streaming from PC - router - TV using cable.

Now looking at CS908, Amazon Fire TV. My requirements are:
* streaming movies, videos, photos, music, pdf & other text files from my PC & HD
* streaming HD movies & TV (e.g., Discovery, Korean dramas, etc) from the net
* using Kodi
* ??

Appreciate your recommendation on which box I should get, price and company.

Many thanks.

Was planning to get a media player. Installed Kodi on my PC to test it out. It is not as good as I thought. Some of the issues:
* most of the channels are not available for viewing (broken, not available etc).
* difficult to switch from one channel to another compared to changing the channel no on ASTRO
* I have watched 2 movies on Kodi on my PC. Satisfactory quality (720). But find it cumbersome trying to get the channels I normally watch, Discovery, National Geographic, etc

Like to know if you have switched to media player and find it:
AA better than ASTRO
BB worse than ASTRO

and reasons behind the above. And whether you have reverted back to ASTRO.

Thanks.

won't be going back to astro for whatever reasons. suka-suka increase price. shakehead.gif

I used to pay about RM600 per year. Later it became more than RM1000 per year AND I did not add any new channels! All because of HD programs. Not fair to customers when we subscribe to HD channels and still need to pay for SD channels which we do not use anymore!

Yes, ASTRO is there to make money and thus they bundle their packages to maximise their profit. Wish there is one providor where we can pick channel by channel instead of bundles (most of the channels in the bundle we do not watch).

u haven't got it right:

.. kodi is just ONE app that u can install on an androidbox.
*** Interesting. Which other app I can try beside Kodi?

.. kodi is a "universal", popular, vast app with many versions for androids, pc, mac, other devices.
.. kodi is an "endless possibilities" platform for streaming enthusiasts - both builders and users.

on the right android box and sufficient broadband speed, u can have many other great apps incl:

tvapp.so - a free iptv with many great channels incl discovery, national geo, fox sports, bbc - all in hd.
*** installed that on my PC but cannot play. Impressed with their channels in the list. Will re-download and re-install and see.

popcorn time - video on demand for thousands of eng movies, a variety of file size and quality to select.
*** will try this out later.

assorted chinese apps - tonnes of chinese stuff, mainly in mandarin
kissanime app - all the japanese anime u want, eng subbed.
youtube app - the usual youtube to watch anything available.

astro... if u must have wahlaitoi or supersports, yes, stick to it.
the rest of the channels can be found elsewhere somehow.
i dumped astro 1.5 yrs ago, saved so much money and get to watch lots more! laugh.gif
*** Good to know this. Saving money and watching more are what I am after as well. So that is a mission POSSIBLE! Ha.

could not agree more. from super pack 1, i downgraded to basic (for unforeseen emergency case). have been using android box for more than a month. why?

1. screw asstro for la liga, serie a and ligue 1 issue. not even offering customers to reduce price
2. hundreds of channels from iptv apps, at minimal price. not mentioning live channels in kodi too
*** Mind PM me on your best 2 paid iptv?

3. i can watch whichever tv shows that i want, whenever i want (fear the walking dead is not even on asstro)
4. save me the time to download shows/movies which i have been doing for years

btw, i am on 30mbps package with minix neo xh8 plus
*** Your best 2 things and worst 2 things on Minix? Thinking of getting the new Himedia H8 2G Ram 16 G memory

Try the above to get IPTV.

One step you need to set before following his steps is to activate the TV option to appear on your main menu:

system
TV
General
Enabled

then follow his steps.

I can watch some of the live TV. Over 1000 shows. Enjoy!

P/S You can create your own IPTV list. Problem here is in maintaining it to keep it usable as most of the links will be changed. Pity.

Yup... Noticed it these past few days. Tweak firewall here and there, check if being blocked by Antivirus etc.. Nope. It's dead. Hope it's only temporary.

Good to know this. I have tried many times with no success.

Will try again some weeks later.

If I connect the following:

AA
HDMI from box to TV

BB
RCA from box to AVR and AVR to TV

AA is for normal viewing (don't want to switch on the AVR unncesssarily)

BB is when I want better sound reproduction (action movie, concert)

Is the above possible?

Thanks.

P/S With AA & BB setup, I can reduce the volume from TV to have 5.1 sound from the AVR. Problem now is, TV is getting 2 video inputs - from HDMI and also from the AVR. No problem? I thought video input from AVR is processed and won't this confuse the TV with 2 different video signals? I am new to this AVR thing. Thanks.

Yes, I can unplug the box to TV HDMI when using the AVR. I am the lazy type. Ha.

dont understand why the big deal about netflix etc when everything can be streamed for free

Ya, I kind of agree with you. Have been using Netflix for the past few days. Not really that impressed that I will be paying for it. Only good thing is you will get the streaming without any problem with the unavailable/broken link one gets in Genesis, 1Channel etc.

By the way, watch Rise Of the Hackers in Netflix. Interesting and scary too. They managed to get into Iranian's nuclear station and played with their compressors!

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc.. 100% Legal.. Genesis, 1 Channel, etc.. NOT!! As for documentary "Rise of the Hackers", bro, if that worries you then you really don't want to know what can be done & very easily today. See that smartphone on the table across you or in your pocket.. That my friend is the ultimate spying device.. It has cameras, mics, fingerprint scanners, GPS, phone metadata, etc.. And they don't even have to force people to buy/use it.. While we are at it, have you seen Edward Snowden's documentary, "Citizenfour"?  biggrin.gif
*
Yes, aware of the spying via cameras in mobile, laptop etc.

Will try to find Citizenfour later toady to watch it.

Saw an article in The Star on Netflix in Spore. Movies are classified for general, parents etc. Do we have that in Msia Netflix? Don't think so from what I have observed over the past few days.

Do we need to pay GST for Netflix subscription? Payment is directly to the US company. Hope Ah Jib is not reading this!

Hope that some expert here can help me.

Using ARES build (on my PC), I like the shows in Rock Concerts. I do not want to install ARES on my TV Box as I do not want to re-do some of the configurations I have done in my TV Box. But want to watch the concerts on my TV, instead of my PC.

How can I find out the link addresses for the concerts in ARES?

Thanks.

P/S Found this path plugin://plugin.video.phstreams

Will explore further and see if I can set this up in my TV Box.

Need a second one if what they are covering in Bloomberg is not interesting to me.

Thanks.

P/S Explore BBTS, like the news, music sections.

Subjective... We here try to avoid such ranking.. Read the thread.. Multiple devices have been mentioned. Make an educated decision based off posts, reviews & videos showing performance.. Then there's budget.. What's good for me might suck badly for you.. There's no perfect (Rolls-Royce) box.. Please Read!!

Thank you. smile.gif

Thanks for your points.

I do not believe in brand names and do not go for the best products (paying a lot more for something slightly better) but the best of the mid range. Value for money. I am hoping to cut my study short by looking at the "Toyota" category and then study 2 or 3 brands in detail. I did that with Himedia H8 and Minix neo x8-h plus and later bought H8. And by the way, hope that the 2 are in the same category and I was not comparing apple with durian! Ha.

Cheerio.

Like to know whether any one has experienced your TV Box auto erasing and updating Android system?

What did you do to correct that?

That's unusual, what TV box? Does the box have an SD/USB update method which was mistakenly activated? Try disabling auto update if possible, or freeze the OTA app with Titanium Backup.
*
Thanks Sifu!

Checked and disabled all auto update except OTA.

Please clarify. I thought OTA (On The Air?) is to connect mobile etc to TV box then to TV. How will that cause it to update? Titanium Backup is an apps in Google?

Thanks.

OTA (Over The Air) or better known as FOTA (Firmware Over The Air).. Basically means the device is able to receive & apply firmware updates wirelessly.. Think like updating a Windows PC from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, updates are downloaded & run.. Core system files are replaced, etc.

Connecting mobile to TV box... Could be through mirroring, DLNA, casting, etc.

Titanium Backup is an app available in the Play Store. It's a powerful app that requires a rooted device with busy box for best performances.. It can be used to freeze apps so they don't run until after you unfreeze it. Think of it as disabling the app versus a complete uninstall. So in your case, if rooted, you can locate the OTA app & freeze it so it doesn't "phone" home.
*
Thanks!

Did not know that I have an ET (phone home) in my TV box! Ha.

ES File manager etc not good enough to do the job on OTA?

Will try to stop OTA and see.

Thanks.

While there are android viruses out there. It's not really necessary on the TV box as one should be careful while using it. Besides, it's a media player and shouldn't be used as anything else. However, if better safe than sorry applies, then I'd recommend Avast or 360 security.. Grab from the play store.

*
Noted and thanks. Will try Avast (since you listed that one first!) Ha.

Since there are so lack of 4k materials and hardware, I think it is not a big miss if skips 4k feature.

So could anyone recommend good tv box with 2 GB ram, 16 GB emmc rom, support trueHD, dtsHD, atmos passthrough, support BDMV, BD-ISO container and all the goodies except 4k feature? Would the price be much cheaper?
*
Sorry to ride on your thread.

Limited 4K shows on the net, not much point in spending more $ just to get 4K features (but most TV boxes have 4K by now).

Samsung & LG are phasing out 3D TV. Due to limited 3D shows. So, not much point in must get 3D for your TV box.

Cheerio.
