Generally speaking, the limitation is in the ARM chipset. If your set top box runs on Intel chipset, that would not be a problem. Also, you would need OPENGL 2.0, which is lacking in most Android Devices. Correct me if im wrong, but Mali 450 gpu which commonly found in android box nowaday supported opengl 2.0, as part of their spec sheet. Also, you would need OPENGL 2.0, which is lacking in most Android Devices. Mali 720 in their spec sheet did mention the support of OpenGL 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1 as well as DirectX 11. Edit : Oh i got it .... opengl vs opengl es ... hi guys.. may i know what is the difference between a product like HiMedia H8 Octa Core (2G RAM+16GB) vs Nvidia Shield ?
I saw many reviews about Nvidia Shield which were quite good and I am wondering if i should spend big bucks on it vs something like the Himediah8? I'm looking for something to play/stream 1080p shows and probably some occasional gaming for the living room. (if can torrent will be best) |

QUOTE(andrewL @ Mar 13 2016, 01:51 AM) hi guys.. may i know what is the difference between a product like HiMedia H8 Octa Core (2G RAM+16GB) vs Nvidia Shield ? nividia shieid is the king of such boxes at this time, so congrats on the purchase!I saw many reviews about Nvidia Shield which were quite good and I am wondering if i should spend big bucks on it vs something like the Himediah8? I'm looking for something to play/stream 1080p shows and probably some occasional gaming for the living room. (if can torrent will be best) just some highlights: QUOTE 4K Ultra HD ready 4K playback at 60 FPS (VP9, H265, H264) Lossless, DD+/DTS (pass-through), DTS-HD MA (pass-through), Dolby TrueHD (pass-through) 802.11ac 2x2 MIMO 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi 16 GB and 500 GB (Note: portion of storage occupied by system software) Expandable with microSD card or USB drive. Gigabit Ethernet HDMI 2.0 Two USB 3.0 (Type A) Micro-USB 2.0 MicroSD slot https://shield.nvidia.com/android-tv .. assuming u have 30mbps or higher... .. the box is ready for netflix uhd and other 4k videos which should get common in the coming months/years. .. HD audio pass thru is impt for home theater systems. .. if yr router is dual band, wifi streaming of HD/UHD material should be a piece of cake. .. 16GB memory is good but with expandable capability - excellent for big apps and file storage. u mentioned torrent - just install the app, set the path to save it in the expanded (max 500gb, i assume) storage. the only drawback is becos it is an advanced and not an entry level box, there are not many users here yet. it will be impt for u to find a forum where u can get help and tips from other users incl getting hold of some the fabulous apps, big and small, diff languages, etc. still, an android is an android, many things are common, work the same way although there will be some issues specific to the box. once u get all the essentials going, no doubt u will enjoy this box. First thing is to update the firmware to marshmallow and if your TV has HDMI-CEC, enable that, as that allows you to control the box (play, pause, etc) with the TV remote, rather than the Shield remote, or just get a sturdy keyboard + touchpad combo remote. Finally, slap KODI + a couple of addons on it.. That should get you rolling.. I have just purchased a Minix Neo U1. However, it seems that using the existing remote control. it is very very difficult to access certain panels/options within an application. It seems that it should respond better to a mouse or something. Is that the case?
If it is, should I get a MiniX NEO A2 Lite 2.4G Air Mouse with Keyboard like this one? http://www.lelong.com.my/minix-neo-a2-lite...7-01-Sale-I.htm Or can a regular Logitech mouse/keyboard work, like this one? http://www.lazada.com.my/logitech-r6l4br7-...ite-569120.html Thank you. |

The latter feels too awkward for me during daily usage. So yeah, while most regular bluetooth or usb dongle wireless device keyboards and mouse will work, for a media center, like me one that looks and functions as a remote while still sporting a full keyboard. So weigh both options & go with which you reckon would be a more comfortable fit in your hands & for daily operations. Can this one totally replace the existing remote? By the way, thanks for the Minix recommendation. It's nice! |

QUOTE(AVFAN @ Jan 2 2016, 09:53 PM) i have little knowledge about nas, only that it is a storage server networked to stream to any device u wish in a lan. hi,i play most of my stuff via local usb/hdd. wifi streaming used mainly for online material. i have thought a nas for some time now, but then i felt no big need. that day has yet to come. samba is a generic term, windows call it file sharing. to get samba to work, u need to allow the pc to be accessed by yr device. once u set that, accessing from the device is just using the usual pc id and pw. it is simple and effective for home lan use, incl bluray and 4k material. What is the different between using Samba to stream via PC and plugging the hard disk to the TV box for playing the hd content? thanks |

Yes it can completely replace the existing IR remote. It's has a nice weight and feel to it, with soft buttons; not like those clicky sound + feedback type remotes. I'm not a fan of such clicky plastic.Full disclosure: The only issue I had with the Neo A2 Lite remote is the absence of the underscore (_) button on the remote; This post has been edited by voncrane: Mar 14 2016, 12:10 PM |

QUOTE(ranger2020 @ Mar 14 2016, 11:54 AM) hi, depending on yr equipment and efficiency of yr local network, it can zero difference for basic hd videos. however, for larger files esp those with hd audio, streaming may not be smooth. What is the different between using Samba to stream via PC and plugging the hard disk to the TV box for playing the hd content? thanks also, less effort.. some people stream direct from pc since yr file is originally in pc, why bother to copy to hhd, turn on device and play local at device? some people are also set up such that several hdd's are attached to pc (or some nas station), stream everything from a central point. me, i samba the smaller videos from pc, then delete them. larger, better ones for collection, i put on hdd first for later local playback. |
