Here's what I suggest:

Shoes : Wear your current one. Get a new pair over there because the material used is different from Malaysia.

Slippers : Get a new pair over here. Pretty hard to find one over there.

Winter Clothing : Bring one from here. Get the rest in UK. They have better design and more suitable.

Laptop : With current restrictions and assuming it will prolonged till end of the year, get it over there. It cost approx. the same but the price gap not too far apart.

Socks : Bring sufficient amount of socks that you need a week. IF you find it not enough, get it over there. Cheap yet good quality 3 for 5 pairs.

For laptop wise, i suggest you get it in Malaysia! Especially during pc fair because you can get better offer (FREE STUFFS) that might be useful and it would be expensive to get them in UK. Get a camera here cause you'll see lots of different building structure in UK!
No need to buy new shoes to bring to UK, just wear ur current ones which is comfortable. Slippers, you can buy in malaysia those cheap ones - anyway, u only wear slipper at home. I dun think you would want to wear them out there cause it's freezing cold!! unless you want to save till summer.
Winter clothing, it's true that there are lots of winter clothings in UK but it can be expensive (depends if you want to get branded one or not) if you buy them in primark, it can be cheap. It would b expensive if you buy from NEXT or Marks & Spencer.
Socks, you can bring some frm malaysia or get it there.
You really need lots of socks cause when it gets winter, socks will keep u warm.. hehehe

In the UK, only one student account can be opened per person. This includes Natwest's Step Account and HSBC's Student/International Student Account.

If you are planning to get a credit card here, try to open a Natwest's Step Account. starting june 2005, international student must stay in the UK for at least 3 years before they can get credit card from HSBC, but Natwest can grant a credit card straight away for Step Account holder.

According to some of my friends' opinion, HSBC's internet banking is better than Natwest's.

Some of my friends opened Natwest's step account and HSBC's international student account simultaneously. by doing that, both of the banks can not check whether you already opened a student account from another bank. With this, you can get a credit card from Natwest and a convenient internet banking from HSBC.

However, policies can change. Make sure you check the fine print properly, as they change their policies quite frequent.

I got myself an overcoat at River Island for 60 GBP and it's something that keeps you real warm even in winter. I don't think you can get something that good in Malaysia with the price tag.

About the slippers, yea, I got my faithful RM10 slippers from Malaysia, you can't really find any cheap "pasar malam" slippers here laugh.gif

So if you still want to open hsbc yet not meeting the requirement, make sure your old man give you big bank draft laugh.gif

AH!!! HSBC sucks..
Natwest - many people open this but I dun think they r giving good offer.
If it's a Step account, you only get a solo card! No cheque book at all. you can't transfer money to other people wif step. Interest rate is low!

HSBC - bad service (in my university) , even though they offer student account, they give u a solo card, cheque book, but this is better than natwest - it allows you to transfer money to other people using Internet banking where natwest doesnt.

NOTE: Some cities allow you to open student account!!
HSBC's International Student Account is different from HSBC Student Account.
Natwest doesn't give you Student Account but some cities do give you that . I have a few friends from Leeds and they got a student account from Natwest. As for my case, I only get a Step Account.

If Natwest gives u a step account, try to ask in Lloyds!!
So far, the best one is Lloyds cause they gave me a VISA debit card, cheque book.

If anything happens to the laptop, it may take up to 2 months or so to get your laptop back.

2 months without a computer is horrible.

another thing regarding banks and stuff, if your college/uni has a special arrangement with a particular branch, got get as many stuff as possible, as in current account, savings and a credit card&debit card.
because if u try getting it at another branch/another bank, its almost impossible.

as for credit card, make sure u dont overspend, other than that u will find it is a nice tool to have with you. coz debit card on some places(online) they dont take it.

edit:

regarding calling home, if u are on a contract that free minutes includes 0845/0844 numbers, i have a few number that enables u to call to m`sia for practically free by only using your free minutes.

im on o2 so o2 contracts includes it.

ill try to dig out my uk phone when im free.

is 20 kg enough for a student luggages? i am planning to take Mas, because of direct flight, but i heard Bristish airway offers 30 kg for student luggages. But anyway, i prefer Mas, cause i heard that the seat in Bristish airway is not that as comfortable as Mas. For sure we should get the one has comfortable seat one since this is a long journey flight...11 hours...cool..my ass gonna burn. I am leaving probably on 26/9 or 27/9..how's about your guy?

Does British Airway resume their to UK from Malaysia? I thought they have cancel this unless you plan to take it from Singapore. Anyway, according to my parents, flight with BA is horrible compare to MAS. Probably it is because of the sits and there's no personal TV in front of you laugh.gif

11 hours is alright. I onced sat for 14+ hours. That was pure torturing because I'm sitting next to the fire escape door whereby I can't stretch my leg at all. rclxub.gif

As for weight, for first timers, 20kg is not enough. I think MAS still offers 30kg to students. Check with them for clarification.
