About the flights, I read in the news yesterday that BAA has requested airports to follow specific security measures for flight bound to UK. So if you are not allowed to carry on any hand luggage and stuff like that, I believe KLIA will most likely inform the passengers prior to the flight.

About getting a job, I'm not a bright/young/genious graduate, but I did found a job here. And some forummers also managed to find a job here. It might not be the job that everyone dies for, but I certainly love that job because the field I'm in has little prestigious companies and this is one of the best companies in this field smile.gif

Lastly, for now, the shortage falls on civil engineering sector, so in other word, it's easier for civil engineer to get a job because companies do not need to go through a series of hassle to apply a permit for them compared to other engineering discipline.

Sorry, I'm actually working in a hospital, so I just asked my medical colleague to do one for me. For those not as lucky as me, I think you can go to any clinic and hospital with xray facilities and the report with the film should be ready within the day.

yeah, i believe most clinics nowadays have inhouse x-ray service (what's it called... radiology or something?). i did mine in a clinic and got the x-ray quite immediately, just like a polaroid.

but like i've mentioned before earlier, some U needs bloodworks, and these has to be sent to the lab. this can take between 3 days to a week. so do this earlier, not the day before ur departure ^^

Thanks Geminist. your last sentence really boost me up a lot rclxms.gif: . although i know such thing will always become a variable.

For those who are now in UK notworthy.gif.... so is it advisable to use Emirates to UK? or do you guys heard anything about what special action that UK government will take for the flight that come from Arab countries?

If really not advisable then i need to change soon as I book the ticket already.
Damn terrorists... make me do twice for the same job. vmad.gif mad.gif

Here is a list of jobs for which it is relatively 'easy' to find a job (as in the companies do not have to write a detailed report to prove that they have not managed to find anyone else suitable within the EU for that job, etc etc). Not to say that you cannot find a job outside of those listed, but you will probably need to be specialized or are a very promising graduate/ worker for the company to pick you above anyone else in the EU who is competing for the same job.

http://www.skillclear.co.uk/skilllist.asp

Of course, you need to have an officially recognized/ accredited degree, etc etc.

Hmm.. replying to one of the earlier posts.. shipping is the best way. Weight count is per 5 kilos. I forgot bout the price, but i'll update this when i get the answer.

Anyway, apparently it seems many of you are first-timers flying to the UK. One word of advice, be prepared for very stringent checks. The first time I flew OUT from the UK, they were so strict that I felt pissed off because they treated me like I'm some kind of terrorist of some sort. Also, the people there are polite, so if one greets you, at least have the courtesy to reply back.

Looking at another previous reply. Birmingham, moreover the west side of Birmingham (including Wolverhampton) is generally a *not being racist here* but more of a Indian/Pakistani descent populated area. Other places including Coventry, bla bla.. You can hear sirens everywhere (it's normal) including in London. But heightened security since the 7/7 bombings in London, somehow makes it feel safer. However, do try your best to avoid trouble. Especially anti-social youngsters that tend to dress up gothic style or wear hoods, etc. Avoid them at all costs, they can be very racist and dangerous. Just don't fall into a trap and get provoked by people, after all it's not your homeland.

It's easy but not the easiest because you are required to have two years experience in the related field. It took my friend with a Masters degree half a year before he can get a permit.

Read this in the Star today.

"In Kuala Lumpur, a Malaysia Airlines flight to London took off as scheduled despite the heightened security.

MAS senior general manager of communications Indira Nair said MH004 left KLIA as scheduled at noon yesterday.

"Our flights in and out of London are operating as per schedule."

She said due to the stringent security screening, "all passengers are requested to report early for check-in to minimise flight delays."

She said MAS would also implement a new cabin baggage security measure for passengers from Heathrow airport.

The measure was introduced by the British Transport Department.

Under the new rules, passengers are only allowed to carry one plastic transparent carrier bag per person with minimal and essential belongings onboard. All other baggage will have to be checked in.

Meanwhile, an MAB official said there would be no change to the cabin baggage rule at KLIA.

"Passengers will still be allowed to carry their hand luggage on board."

Phew! Hope this dude is right. rclxms.gif

Of course, if you read carefully they did state that for the engineering related fields in that list, you need to have the relevant experience.

And like I said, if you are promising or have the stuff the companies are looking for, then some of the companies will be willing to bend their backs and to make the effort to get you that work permit in spite of the EU competition. Having a degree from the top few universities will certainly help.

Erm.. sorry i'm a bit blur regarding this. from the link u provide, it states engineer require 2 years working exp to get a work permit.

then, under SEGS - Science and Engineering Scheme, if graduate with second class honours (2.2) or higher can stay in UK for a year. So, if during that period i manage to work in the engineering related field till the given term is finished. This means i cannot either stay or apply for worK permit? due to i dont have enough working experience (just work till about a year only) arang-arang doh.gif

Or as long as my employer agree to sponsor me, then i can still work in UK for the remaining time. But is this kind of work permit same as the work permit that u showed us? sweat.gif (need two years working exp one).

Thanks in advance

The SEGS scheme is introduced for graduate (science/engineering) to stay for another year here in the UK. You can work for one year anywhere in the UK without restriction with the permit. Before the one year is up, your employer will need to apply a working permit on your behalf smile.gif

Yeah. If your boss decide not to hire you, you have to return to Malaysia.

Since we're on the topic of jobs.....how easy is it to get a part-time job there? Specifically in Sheffield. And what's the pay like?

I'm not gonna rely on this side income, but it'd be good to get some cash

Yes, you're right. Any doctor who is qualified to do medical check up will do. Frankly speaking, medical check up is not a must but it depends on your luck. I did performed medical check up but when i was there, they never ask for it. However, my friend did not do it but the custom officer ask for it. So, the officer ask him to go into the office and question him sweat.gif

there is a minimum wage system in place at the moment in the UK, if I'm not wrong it's 5.50 per hour.

However, as a holder of a student visa, we are only allowed, what?, 20 hours of working time per week? It's pretty easy to get jobs there, however, the best jobs are usually in the university campus.

Like the rest said, it is easy and you are entitled to 20 hours working only. The salary could vary to where you work (company I mean). In Sheffield, you could try the Student Union.

However, my advice is, do not overwork yourself. Make sure you do have time for yourself to do other stuffs (travelling, projects, socializing, rest). Going to UK is all about experience and having fun. I've been told by my friend that some students are there to earn money (because of the amount they get paid) and not to study, if you know what I mean. For example (this is what I heard and it is seriously happening), a student (yeah, that particular fella) only sleeps 3 hours a day. The rest of his time is working and university (I even doubt he goes to university for lectures). From day-time job to university to midnight shift job. That's really bad.

My old part time job earns me around 5.05 GBP per hour so it's rather acceptable.

It's not that hard to find a job, all you need to do is just scout around smile.gif
