+ depends on what supermarket u go to. asian supermarkets have lots of malaysian, indonesian, korean and japanese noodles/ramen/ramyeun in all sorts of varieties. asda and tesco do have them as well, but not all brands.

+ yes, football tickets are very expensive.

+ the weather is usually not hot. but at the peak of summer, it's even hotter than malaysia that people die of heatstrokes by the hundreds.

+ yes, foreign students can work part time. there's a maximum of 20hours per week during term. i dont recall such laws bcoz everybody i know around here is working part time.

it depends on type of account you are opening.

for hsbc, the student account incur some fee since last year, but i dont think it is 20quid monthly, but abt 50quids per year.

try natwest or lloyds as well. you have to walk in and see what they offer you. as natwest, some might give you step account where you wont get a cheque book, which is quite essential.

bristol again? so many newcomer to bristol! uwe? uob?

4 years ago, university wont receive credit card (except american express) for tuition fees, that made cheque essential unless you carry cash.

and when you are paying on enrollment day, they wont have direct debit facilities on site.

so as student/uni accommodation, they need you to pay first installment + deposit with cheque dated way earlier before you move in, then only allow direct debit to be set up for following installment.

so as some private accommodation which requires you to write three months advance cheque for the summer month when you are not around + bond.

i paid my first month rent + deposit with cheque for my room now.

paying my society fees and professional fees with cheque yearly. paid my leave to remain application with cheque.

not to forget those payment for clubs/society t-shirt and activities.

those are situation i had encounter, which i guess it is still very essential to me. though most of the thing can be replaced by direct debit.

And some feeBay sellers do not accept/use PayPal and refused to give their bank details for direct deposit but they will accept cheques.

Hey, another Bristolian! Welcome! Just to let you know that you really need a good pair of legs to walk around the campus/city, it's quite hilly here. biggrin.gif

Back to your Qs, are there such banks taking out 20pound from customers' accounts? I haven't heard of that before, even my friends using HSBC didn't complain anything. I'm using NatWest, so far everything is fine except that it's online banking sucks!

get a debit card, it not difficult to apply at all compare to credit card.

and you can use debit card in most shops, for most payment and to withdraw money as well.

there are a lot of accounts do have charges. ex. those with premium services etc.

and as what glyde said, because there were quite a few cases of fraud done by manipulating free international student account, regulation has been changed / tighten and some charges may apply.
