hi.. i want to ask is it hsbc bank will take your money 20 pound every month if i open my account? if yes, which bank are not? btw, i'm new in bristol..
*
for me, don ever open international student acc because they charge u £5 per month. If possible, get a hsbc acc in Malaysia and ask for a reference letter, than open a UK local student acc. No fees or charges apply for local student acc. If financially can support, better have premier acc ( can be personal or share with your dad la) , than transfer money from malaysia to UK won cost you a single cent.

However, if you don have HSBC in Malaysia, than go for lloyst in UK. You can have both debit and saving acc. Debit acc no interest but saving got interest. So you can always put your extra money in saving acc.

Don ever go to Balclay because you must at least have £2000 in your debit acc and there is no interest for that. If your money fall below £2000, they will apply charges like hsbc debit acc.

For Nets, in Newcastle they actually give us 5 years metro ticket but you must have landline in UK. So i don suggest you guys go for Nets.

In a nutshell, HSBC local acc is best cause no charges and saving acc got highest interest among all bank
Lloyst is easy to open

p/s : you must get inductory letter from your University before open an acc

www.e2save.com

They have some crazy offers. Totally free phone + 1 yr tariff .. i was like WTF....
Anyone actually tried it? How does it work? Is it really free?
*
there always a catch for the deal. You can go to dialaphone.com and see they actually give ps3, xbox360 and ipod for free and the price is just same which offer in shop. So, why UK ppl so generous??? first, to apply online you must at least stay in UK for 1 year or more. Second, the phone you get actually is refurnish phone and no new phone. IF your phone got problem within the contract, it will cost you £45-£100 to repair it. So why don go to carphonewarehouse? They give free repair, brand new phone, and you can get your phone on the spot!! beside you can terminate the contract whenever you like. What you need is surrender the phone to carphonewarehouse and apply for new contract and get a brand new phone? Which 1 sound more attractive???

Supermarket there got sell instant noodles?? Not maggie la.... other brand like korean noodles....
The ticket for a football match is too expensive! Here in Malaysia, a football match cost about RM10, that is, around 2pounds and no one will watch!! lol...
the weather not hot right?? If in Malaysia, u try to walk to school and u will be sweating all the way!
Foreign students can work part time? If i'm not mistaken, last yr or this yr got new law forbidding foreign students to work!
*
no no no, china town got sell only!!! here only got see instand pizza, 12'' is like 80p to £2 in http://www.iceland.co.uk/. and instand cake as well!! no more instand noodles in UK unless you go chinatown which actually cost you 30% more exp compare to Malaysia.

about part time, you can watch 20 hours per week. but you i think you need to upgrade your visa ( i not sure).

weather here varies, in winter you may get 4 season in 1 week. example monday is sunny days, tuesday is snowly day... wed is rainning day and so on... so take care of yourself and don ever drink tap water!!!

Sorry to say, but a reflash of firmware will not guarantee you a usable phone.

When another forumer here (sonic_cd) was affected by a similar problem, nobody could help him including AP shops and Sony Ericsson service centres.

The only way was to replace the motherboard or something which costs a lot of $$$ and you might as well get a new phone.
*
about e2save, they dont necessarily give you refurb phone unless stated as clearance. 2nd, rather than wasting more money on xbox etc etc, paying £30 monthly for 18 month, i would prefer 11 months free / half price line rental. nowadays, you dont have to stay at least a year to get such offer, i have many junior friends get it even they stay in uni accommodation, but they hv to do more work like providing proof of accommodation etc, and waiting for the bank card.

secondly. it is instant not instand biggrin.gif you can get some instant noodle fro general stores actually. brand: super noodle, koka, tecso value, sainsbury basic etc etc. but then they dont state yummy at all. in that case, go to chinese stores or japanese shops, or international stores, you will get a lot more selection. i like japanese/korean shops for their noodle selection.

you dont have to upgrade visa to work part timely. just make sure you dont work over 20 hrs during academic term.

tap water? it depends on location. I have no problem surviving tap water for 5 years now. and i have seen numerous locals surviving on tap water for their life. frankly, welsh water and water in france taste way way better than england/midland water, darn hard water.

read more on hard water. it is fairly safe to drink the water, as hard water does not contain any chemicals (unlike our chlorine heavy tap water). but it needs some getting used to, as the water is heavy in minerals. u can see calcifications after washing dishes or even after shower. ur skin feels very dry after bath, so i recommend those who just moved to the UK to have skin moisturizer until u get used to it.

u can drink it directly, but it tastes different that what we used to. so i recommend boiling or filtering it before consumption, not bcoz it's not safe, just bcoz we malaysians are not used to it.

1. a bank letter from ur university, indicating you are student and your current academic address in UK. a passport. money or bank draft if you want to bank in directly but not necessarily, can be done at next time. that's is it if memory serves me right. but will be better if you just bring in every essential documents if you want, in case they need it.

2. a debit card at least, proof of your current address.

what do u mean "private sector"? do u mean privately owned homes? it's still a home and has an address, isnt it? it refers to anything that is addressed to ur current accommodation, be it college accommodation, private house or renting a room in the attic.

proof of address is usually a document that shows that u're residing in that particular address. bills, NHS certificate, tenancy agreements are all considered as proof of address.

utilities bills, bank statement. as long as some sort of quite official document with your name and address is sufficient to confirm that you are staying there. any letters from uni with with ur name and address is fine too.

get a bank letter from university. that letter is useful enough to confirm everything. else you can show your tenancy agreement too.

Crazy Pricey as well. I've just gotten my provisional license and it cost me 45gbp for the fee's and 5gbp for the recorded postage. That's 50GBP before I even take an exam lol. But yes its better than going to sainsbury and having to bring my passport.

I am in London (at Croydon to be precise). But pursuing A-Levels in college. Still 18 years old and I'm waaayyy fortunate that the buses and trams are free. Thank god they renew the Oyster application policy.

Isit? Does this apply the same for Young Person's account? I've never faced such predicament.
