Oh dear!! Sorry to hear. Sumthing wrong with this new set up as u are having so many problem. Throw all and start new.

It's less than 2 months old so still teething problems I suppose.

The thing is... when I pulled out the dead shrimp, it feels like the shell is abnormally hard so I did a water test and found that my kh has gone up quite substantially but GH is ok. I think some rocks are leeching lime so also removed all the rocks now.

Yea 500 should be enough.

But it might go higher on lower depending on what items your getting as I have calculated my budget.

If your on a tight budget you will have to use these items:
Basic aquarium normal non clear glass.
Some cheaper shrimps.
Use sand for substrate instead of shrimp soil or ADA soil.
Cheaper plants that they normally sell in LFS.
PVC Pipe as a ceramic house replacement.

If like this I think will cost you around 200 to 300 only.

Good luck.

Hi everyone, just wondering if it's ok to keep red cherry shrimp in a 2ft tank with no substrate at all, but only plants with no roots?

For rcs. Can. Just that the shrimp will have to roller skate on the floor during the initial phase till biofiln build up on the floor. Color will be dull without strong contrast on substrate and decor.

Hi, to everyone and sifus~

I just got the first batch of Crystal red shrimp of my life a few days ago (29 Otc).

This morning I found one dead, and when I took out the body and touched it, the body feels soft.

Is this what people on the internet says, after molting, the shrimp released some kind of strong smell that draws other shrimps to attack it?

dead shrimp , after few hour body left in the tank, all will be soft and start to rot.
Shrimp died after molting the body will be soft and their body after molting is prone to attack from fish and affected more by tank parameter.
Shrimp normally mate after molting that why certain times a shrimp be swarmed by others.

Yes. Malaya can be kept with bare tank but most wont show their color, as substrate and surrounding color is one of yhe main key in determine their color change.

i use many kind , Eheim Pro Substrate, ADA Bio Rio, Seachem Matrix, Rein Biotech Biohome Plus etc,
Sometime the media you choose depend on your filter type and holding space, of all those i like Biohome Plus and if according what it claim
is true , it have the highest surface area among all those media i use, that mean it good for small filter that have filter media space constraint.
