Up Aqua Shrimp Sand and fertilized by shrimp poo poo. ~10% weekly water change + topup with RO water mixed with Azoo mineral plus and Vita plus @30% recommended dosage

Admittedly I should've done more cleaning rather than letting all the crap accumulate. Only after noticing that the floating plants grows at a prodigious rate did I start cleaning.

Now doing twice a week siphon and manually remove whenever I see a creepy crawly.

still got bacteria infection to add in.. ahahahhaha
-Seed shrimp & nematodes - can vacuum substrate to reduce. (harmless but just ugly only)
-Planaria & hydra - Just use biochem no-planaria powder , dose 3 days - all settle(confirm), Biochem no-planaria is from Taiwan anyway.
-Leeches- No-planaria powder may work.
-Pest snails - No-planaria sometime kill them too else get some snail trap to reduce it or employ assassin snail.

all those pest come from the plants and shrimp purchase that hitchhiker on the plants and water, nothing to do with your setup unless you use second hand soil. Taiwan imported shrimp here are notorious to giving free planaria pest as bonus. That how i got my first planaria infestation last time.

ADA Tourmaline? if you want to reduce ph the safe and long lasting way, use plant or shrimp soil, if really Tourmaline can reduce ph! how many you need to dose and how long can it last?

Unless you are into keeping CRS , no need to worry much about PH especially for neocaridina type shrimp like fire red etc, they only require stable ph of range ph5.5 -8.2.
*
Actually it was call JBL Tormec Activ, I got the name wrong. I am going to get some CRSs next week, and I am worried they might be dead or infertile because of the PH problem...

I have seen people on internet said that their CRS breed normally even in PH 7.x tank, but I don't wanna take any chances.

Are there any "natural" ways to reduce water ph and has long lasting effect beside using soil and driftwood?

I was tempting to use PH down product.

although JBL Tormec Activ like sera super peat can reduce ph when use as filter media, it is not a long term solution as it effect only last 3 to 6 mths and there is fluctuation when near end of his lifespan, which make it not that suitable for CRS tank which need constant stable parameter, shrimp soil can provide that stable ph buffering for at least 1 to 2 year.
Don't ever use Ph down products for shrimp tank especially for crs as this ph down only provide temporary effect.
Any fluctuation in water parameter is proven fatal for sensitive shrimp like crs.
There is no shortcut in keeping sensitive shrimp like crs.

Hi everyone, I got another questions about shrimps.

It's it true that Red cherry shrimps won't breed in high PH? Or high PH would greatly reduce the productivity of them?

And has anyone tried to keep Crystal red shrimps in high PH tank before? Did they thrived?

Rcs can breed in high ph, in fact im breeding my blue rili in a 1ft tank with ph8.2 with under gravel filter and sponge filter.

Crs is very different. They need special requirements just for them to survive, not to mention breeding them.
If you really into crs really need to invest in soil.
Ada amazonia soil csn be use. But make sure to throughly cycle it and do few large water change few days apart in 2 werk prior to adding the shrimp.

Yes he's the doom guy alright... biggrin.gif

As arrow mentioned above... and basically you'll see this pop up very often - 'cycle'. Tank cycling is the most important of all. I used Prodibio Digest to quick-start my cycle. Alternative you can also get the Prodibio Start Up Nano.

Some test kits too if you've got the budget? wink.gif

Good luck! thumbup.gif

1. 1x1x1ft tank. - ok
2. LED Lights - ok
3. ADA Amazonia soil from my planted tank mix with some new soil. - ok (cycle and large water to cllear out excess nutrient)
4. Sponge Filter - good
5. Marimo ball. - good to the eyes but not that suitable as they like high ph water)
6. Java moss or something. - grow more of it. Shrimp like and use them as hiding spot and feeding field.
7. Cube Ceramix houses. - ok
8. Am looking to try Orange Rilli Shrimp. - orange rili not begineer shrimp.

This is my checklist.

Well you always start cheap and before you know it it starts getting more and more expensive... laugh.gif tongue.gif

william... you can use qz4eva's list as a guidance for a simple setup.

Or perhaps if you can state your approximate budget the it would be easier to make recommendation. Also, it depends on what shrimps you'll like to have eventually. Cost can/would increase as time goes on..... well at least for me it did... tongue.gif

Good filtration is of course, important. The key is more on taking care of the water parameters than your fauna itself...

filteration: Hang on back filter 2biji (forget how many litre/hr, but its big)

problem is: some said need to put the powder before apply the soil. some say no need. then some say can use normal sand, some say use gravel, and some say use soil for shrimps. so blur now.

and as the question wht shrimps to keep, any recommendation with a room temperature about 27~!

Red cherry should be fine.
Start with some java moss and maybe a few anubias nana.
I've always used ADA soil, no regrets there.
