Anyone here using DLink DNS320L? I am using it together with a 4 Mbps Streamyx because Unifi is not available where we live.

When I run the p2p, I noticed that my Internet slowed, sometimes so bad until I cannot access Google / Facebook. I suspect it is the number of connectivity to the peers. I even set the bandwidth control to 400kb but even with that, I cannot even reach the NAS with it's IP address sometimes - can reach also cannot logon.

Any thing we can set as a counter measure?
*
More question, all these probably more to network than NAS though.
1. You know that 4Mbps is 400KB/s max right? You're basically set the maximum speed already, it'll just utilize all the bandwidth.
2. What's the BT setting? Maximum torrent download, upload, maximum peers per torrent, etc.
3. Can you get proper ping reply from the NAS when you cannot login to its control panel? (ping x.x.x.x)

Thanks for sharing the troubleshooting.

1. Even if I enable 1 torrent download at 200kb max also got problem.
2. Max download = unlimited, max upload = unlimited, cannot set max peer per torrent which I think is the culprit of the problem
3. I will test this when I encounter the issue again.

Based on answer 1 above, I conclude it is the max peer per torrent that is causing this on the DNS320L.

1. I think this should be fine but No.2.
2. Is this number of simultaneous running torrents? Or Global bandwidth? Can you set to only run 1 torrent only at a time?

Even with 1 torrent of small bandwidth setting, if you run 10 torrents at a time also can max out your bandwidth and possible jam your NAS due to overload, try to run 1 torrent a time to check if it happen again. wink.gif

I controlled my torrent download from NAS by utilizing QoS at router level. By doing this, my torrent will max out the available bandwidth when the line is idle and gives other user priority when they need it.

#in attachment, 192.168.1.5 is my NAS, it have the lowest traffic priority. Using OpenWRT firmware.

As in I stopped all torrent files except 1 running at 200kb while I am on a 4Mbps plan, will also congest my network.

oh... didn't know until I read the last line... doh.gif
Best to change to a better modem/router, as the Riger may not have enough power to process all the heavy connectivity from your BT client thus hang the whole Internet, but if you experiencing the NAS hang as well, that's different issue again. sweat.gif
You can, try to flash the firmware of that Riger to better utilize the hardware (from TPLink).

Follow the guide at your own risk, just prepare some budget so you can get new one if this (save some money method) fail.

merchant9 Reduce the connections per torrent, too many connection will cause congestion on some weaker router.

Max connection per torrent cannot be set on my Dlink DNS320L NAS. The BT client is in the NAS, not the router.

The built-in torrent client sucks. Install Transmission torrent client for better performance and throughput. Google for "hack Dlink DNS320"

A few things to consider:-

1) Control the number of connections per torrent and total number of connections the client can make
2) Restrict your upload bandwidth. Maxing out your upload will choke your upload which in turn will choke your download and screw the whole internet connection
3) ADSL Streamyx is asynchronous, which means the upload is slower than download. I think should be between 512kbps to 2mbps. So make sure you manage your bandwidth at the BT client accordingly. Max 70 - 80% of the available upload bandwidth.

Does anyone here has successfully configured Synology NAS to work with Maxis Home Fibre Internet?

I have requested from Maxis for public IP and have configured the necessary port forwarding but I am still unable to get the following to work
1) DDNS (registered with Synology)
2) VPN (using Synology App)
3) Download Station to dlwnload YouTube

What else should I configure?

Thanks in advanced.

How did you setup within Synology? I'm using Asus RT-AC66U router on Maxis Home Fibre (not on public IP) and connect via enabling QuickConnect. I run the EZ-Internet app in Synology and let the wizard detect and configue automatically with the router. I believe some settings are changed within the router itself by EZ-Internet. If EZ-Internet does not recognise your router, you need to manually configure it.

I remember have such a problem when install maxis fibre. Than I call maxis. Said need to do port forwarding in the maxis router. Instruct me step by step. After that the sinology NAS can be detect from outside.

You need to port forward for external access.

Check which port is require for port forwarding on the EZ-Internet wizard and port forward it on the Maxis router.

Another mis-conception of "backup", RAID =/= backup, RAID only redundancy for hard disk fail-over purpose.
If you wants backup, it's another type of media, be it same or other, hard disk, DVD-R, BD-R, etc. to be kept at somewhere else safe and backup from the NAS from time to time.
All NAS uses Linux file system, and each of their own way of implement it, Synology has its own for maximize file storage.

I have been using this D-Link DNS-327L for almost a year. I am using two 2TB hard disk without RAID and file system is EXT4.
There are Disk 1 and Disk 2. Disk 1 is used until 80% for backups of my computer files while Disk 2 is used until 60% for storage of my video files.
Last month when I tried to copy the video files from Disk 2, the copy speed dropped to 0 kbps after few seconds and unable to copy anymore.
Then I test copy other video files, most of the files facing similar dropped copy speed but are able to resume copying with extremely low copy speed.
However about 10% of my video files are unable to proceed copying.
I thought it might be my hard disk failing so I got myself a new 3TB hard disk to replace my Disk 2. I rescued whatever video files I have then put back to this new hard disk.
I did not test with Disk 1 as I have very little video files there.
One month has past and yesterday I faced the same issue when I copy some video files from my Disk 1.
Now I think it might not be the hard disk problem. Can any expert here advise and help me please?

You might want to use the harddisk diagnostic tool to check the harddisks properly.

For WD use WD Data Lifeguard - http://support.wdc.com/product/download.as...0&sid=3&lang=en
For SG use SeaTools - http://www.seagate.com/as/en/support/downloads/seatools/

Also, check for firmware bugs and similar issues at the Dlink forums. If it is firmware bug, chances are others may have experienced it too.

If going above 4 bay, my advice - don't skimp on price. Synology/QNAP 8 bay retails around RM4k. They come with pretty good and easy to use software. One note, as you add more drives and bigger drives, the chances of hitting Non-recoverable read errors (NRE) becomes higher - ie higher chances of data corruption. Hence enterprise HDDs often have a lower NRE rating than consumer HDDs - thus tend to be more reliable.

Here are two articles on NRE with the details.

However if you data is not important and easily replaceable, you can use anything that you wish.

If you are IT savvy, you can build your own NAS with FreeNAS. Just make sure you have ECC RAM to take full advantage of FreeNAS ability to detect and correct bit-rot on your data. With the latest version 9.2.1.9, anyone with the recommended hardware can easily saturate their Gbit port.
