2) Connect your NAS to the switch, you can control downloads wirelessly on any of your device.
My problem lies with the fact that my modem/router is in a different location where I did not pull any cables to it (at the back of my living room sofa across a pathway). When I did my renovation, I only pulled a normal telephone cable to the TV area, thinking that I could just relocate the modem/router, considering Maxis used back my original cable without pulling any fiber optics to the existing RJ11 port. But when I moved them, I get no internet. I live in a condo. Even connecting to the an existing RJ11 port in the master room does not give me any internet connection. Only the existing one which is connected to. So, am wondering what am I doing wrong or what is it that I did not think of.

Hence I am doomed to wireless unless I hack up my walls again. Still looking to call Maxis tomorrow to see what options are available.

Thanks for the advise notworthy.gif

If you want expandability, get the DS2413+.  biggrin.gif

[attachmentid=4172422]

Expandability, DS1813+ are more value for money.

The price different for DS1513+ and DS1813+ is RM700. While DS1813+ and DS2413+ is 1500.

Read/write 1513+ and 1813+ is about the same. While 2413+ is lower. Energy consumption for 1513+ - 51w, 1813+ - 75w and 2413+ - 111w.

If you look at price per drive bays, the most value for money would be the DS2413+ (RM 433 vs RM 462 for the DS1813 vs RM 600 for the DS1513+).

But of course since 8 drive bays would probably be most adequate for most users, the DS1813+ is a better buy.

Quoting those power figures alone is an unfair comparison. Those figures take into account that the unit is fully loaded i.e. 12 drives running in DS2413+, 8 drives running in DS1813+ and 5 drives running DS1513+. If you divide them accordingly, you'll see that per drive they consume around the same. I would assume all 3 units itself without hardisk consume around the same amount of power since running on the same Intel D2700 processor.

Concerning the read / write throughput of the Synology units, what they don't tell is how they achieve it. It's through bonding of the Gigabit LANs on the Synology units. But they also forget to tell you that you need LACP compliant switches (managed) to be able to

I'm currently using 2 Gigabit LANs on my unit in bonded mode. From one PC to the DS2413+, I don't achieve the close to 200MB/s writes across my Gigabit network as advertised. I will only achieve those write speeds when I have another PC writing to the DS2413+ at the same time and the total of the 2 PCs (or more) minus some overheads will be close to the advertised write speeds. Like wise the same for the read speed. So far I know I'm mostly alone on my network and not possible for me to be doing 2 things at different PCs on the same time in the network to take advantage of LACP. So more read / write speeds on the DS1813+ and the DS1513+ with 4 x Gigabit LANs bonded, though nice to have, does not give additional benefit for normal home user. If you have 2 or 3 power users running on the same network, then perhaps it's worthwhile.

But I digress about LACP... For my usage, I find the DS2413+ more convenient since there's room for expansion all under one housing.

hi all, desperately need some advice here.
I used to have a N36L microserver as my NAS hosting all my videos, photos and documents at home. Unfortunately, it was damaged during thunderstorm (by lightning). Initially thought it was powersupply damage, hence i bought a pico-psu to change. When i turn on the microserver, the logo lights up red (critical issue). Sent to shop to check and they confirmed motherboard died.

HP quoted me 800 usd to change the motherboard. Instead of changing the MOBO, i thought of getting another microserver (Gen 8). My question below:

1) I've installed Nas4Free on usb thumbdrive on the N36L. Configured 4 drives into ZFS storage. can i just unplug the usb thumbdrive and plug in to the Gen 8 microserver with the 4 disk? Will it run?

2) Is there anyway to transfer the ZFS array over without wiping as my data is all inside there (especially irreplaceable photos). Learnt my lesson on backup.. i actually bought an external drive to do backup on the day the lightning strike. T.T

appreciate the advice and assistance. If anyone is selling their N36L, do give me a buzz.

If your HDDs are not damaged, just connect the HDDs on the new hardware and import the ZFS pool into the new system.

Try google "ZFS recover on motherboard fail" you should get an idea wink.gif

just to confirm:
1) Plug in usb thumbdrive containing nas4free boot install into new server (Either Gen 8 or N54L)
2) plug in all 4 hdd (hdd is not damaged.... i think)
3) boot up, do ZFS pool import and i'm good to go?

If thats the case, then i'll hunt down for a new server.. Money fly...

Quick answer is NO. See http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=52921.0

However if you need a work around and that you have standard volume or RAID1 configured, just transfer the harddrive to a PC and boot it up on Linux. You will be able to transfer the data to your new 320L faster.

For RM 599 you can get Synology DS-213J which comes with all the bells and whistle of DSM 5. It's a pretty good media box.

However if you are technically inclined, move up to Linux and FreeBSD based storage which opens up advanced options such as self-healing file system, dedup etc.

Just making a correction on the price, the 213J actually costs RM850 on Viewnet's pricelist. The RM599 is for 214SE which has a slower processor compared to 213J.
thankyou

my brother got it for me from US. do you want to buy from me since i just bought a new n54L.

It's still and comes with power brick. you'll need to get a standard laptop charger power chord though.

Bought it at 60 usd. 150w pico-psu with 102w power brick.

Based on online reports and articles, you should never use Greens for NAS. Use the Reds.

I'm planning to getting myself a DS1513+ Synology with probably 5x 3GB WD red or black. Mainly for purpose of storage and streaming of movies to my TV via my current TVIX Media Player.

It will also be hosting my pictures and music library as well. My questions are ..

1. Can I access the photos in the NAS from my iOS smartphone and is that hard to setup from the get go?
2. I'm currently on Maxis Home Fiber 10mb. Can I run torrent downloads on the NAS wireless? Any preferred wireless dongle? I have wired Cat6 to my living room which I will use that to stream my movies to the TV.
3. I will be having 1x POE 720p CCTV connected. Shall that be connected directly to one of the 4 Gigabit ports on the NAS or to the switch.
4. Considering my purpose of NAS, what RAID is suggested for my setup?

Why 1513? Love the expandability option in the future ... smile.gif

You will need to require the following items from Maxis:
1) a Public IP
2) Open relevant service ports
3) Configure port forwarding at router

Anyone here using DLink DNS320L? I am using it together with a 4 Mbps Streamyx because Unifi is not available where we live.

When I run the p2p, I noticed that my Internet slowed, sometimes so bad until I cannot access Google / Facebook. I suspect it is the number of connectivity to the peers. I even set the bandwidth control to 400kb but even with that, I cannot even reach the NAS with it's IP address sometimes - can reach also cannot logon.

Any thing we can set as a counter measure?
