The new Riger silver modem given by TM is a rebranded TP-Link?

Why the webgui looks very similar to TP-Link except the logo?

Good news for DB120-WL user! stren89 make me curious and I start research about Riger DB120-WL hardware used.
This will improve your DB120-WL Ethernet, Wireless and ADSL by using latest driver provided by TP-Link, straight improve DB120-WL efficiency. Click here to see inside Riger DB120-WL!
I have 2 Riger DB120-WL at home, I got extra one because I accept TM upgrade offer last time.

Before proceed, take this precaution.
1. This applicable only Riger DB120-WL (Silver) with Firmware Riger V .4 installed by default.
2. Before proceed updating, please connect your computer directly via LAN Cable to DB120-WL
3. This may void your warranty (maybe not, since you didn't open the case)
4. Doing at your own risk!

If your DB120-WL still have warranty and scare get broken, I suggest you follow, stren89 guide.

Important Change!
You need to accept this awkward changes, because LED driver operate at different signal. You need to learn:

Open zip file and then open "TD-W8951ND_V5_140226" folder and extract (simply click once and drag)

3. Login
Note: Do this only when computer connected via LAN Cable (Hardwired)
Username: tmadmin
Password: Adm@**** (**** is the last 4 HEX digit of MAC Address, eg: D1E3 => Adm@D1E3, you can find bottom of your DB120-WL)

Once progress bar reach 100% and it will redirect to new TP-Link login page!

8. Finished!
Well done, now you have working DB120-WL with TP-Link Firmware! TP-Link will use your previous configuration.

Extra: Improve Wireless Backdoor + Device Security
After flashing and login with old password "Adm@XXXX", simply reset to factory default, this will:
1. Remove extra Virtual or Guest Wireless/AP, leaving only one.
2. Using default TP-Link settings, including default username and password (admin, admin)

No, I don't actually have a DB120-WL nor have I tried it on one. Hence why I said "sharing with others". blush.gif Sound like it would work fine though.

And ah I see. I kinda figured as much but wow, you must love Japan a whole lot. And true, but the internet does help.

Hi Anime4000, thanks a lot for the nice discovery and update there.

You did a spectacular job discovering the real hardware behind the Riger DB120-WL Silver Coloured Lunchbox modem.

It's quite a good hardware actually which TM probably made it right out of so many hardware releases if people actually know how to tune(configure) it properly.

I might want to cross flash it to the official TP-Link firmware in future after the warranty has expired. smile.gif

Meanwhile I only have 1 modem without a spare, so need to take care not to mess much with it yet.

My solution is rather simple approach to patch and remove all the backdoors contained in TM's cutomized firmware.

Here's what I did:

1) Disable Wireless Radio Fully In The Modem (Uncheck the Function)
This turns the modem into a 4 port switch Wired-Only Router Modem.

DHCP Server/Assignment for the TM modem is still left intact so I got myself those cheap TP-Link wireless router in the market disabled DHCP function in them so use them as strategic APs in my house. Anything with Wireless-G/150N is good enough.

With my Wireless APs, plugged into the ports 1-4(either one) of the TM DB120-WL 4 port switch modem, I can turn them off/on as I like with each having secure WPA2-AES access. Mostly I'm on wired, so they are turned ON when I have guest/need access for my mobile devices.

2) Under Access Management Tab

i) Under ACL, Delete Interface 3 For WAN Remote Access, but keep
Interface 2 for WAN Ping (Just Disable It For Future Uses)

Then Deactivate ACL totally with the main radio button above.

ii) TR-069
Deactivate It.

I can only think of those being security weakneses of the modem.
The other stuffs like changing the default access password, MAC filtering, and using stronger wireless encryptions are normal routines to protect your hardware from remote access.

Thanks to your post, I think I now know which modem to get for replacement just in case the stock TM modem dies.

Get the TD-W8951ND

If I'm not mistaken this is the only TP-Link ADSL2+ modem with wifi router which its firmware supports PPoEv6 in the market. The other TP-Link single port bridge modem that has PPPoE v6 does not have wi-fi router function.

*bump* Would it work if I chose the other firmware on the folder? I'm afraid of breaking my only modem. And i think people are already stealing my wireless ap >_<
My phones and tablets all run wireless only, I can't just settle for wired LAN ports. Can someone chime in on why I can't get this flaehed to my riger? it IS .4 that came stock with the modem

Found the solution, choose the other RAS file in the other folder. We have a different revision of firmware for the modem. Now I'm on V5 with TD-W8951_V5_140226.

Leaving this here so no one has to suffer with the issue of flashing the same file again and again and not knowing what to do

Erm.. question here.

I want to ask is it true that the modem provided by tm have security issue on wireless connection and allowing other user to steal on our connection?

Saw stren89 post and to configure the best way i can do is to shut off the wifi connection and just plug in lan cable.

Do computer accessories shop sell extend 10 meter lan cable? My modem locate at living hall, and my room is way far from it. This way is just to prevent unmoral people to stealing the usage.

Thanks for advise.

Yes just disable the UniFi router's DHCP Server and plug it into any of 4 ports of the Riger modem/router.

By doing so, it will become a dumb AP and repeater switch while the routing function still is handled by the Riger.

Sorry guys, I tried on my 2nd Riger Modem (under warranty) and I flash it, it really need RAS "TD-W8951_V5_140226"
then can proceed to use "TD-W8951_V5_140306" even you can revert back "TD-W8951_V5_140226"

I believe this RAS thingy should be Open Source, a lot modem-router uses same interface, if can get the source code and compile, we can use our custom build biggrin.gif

Amateurs who are attempting this.

Please be careful on what you're doing.

Always refer to the make brand and model number at the top left of the modem front face labelled in white.

It only applies to Riger DB120-WL.

TM is using a universal design silver casing for all their modems and routers now. That includes their ONTs, home gateway routers and STBs.

There's also the Innacom ADSL2+modem that is also in distribution now which looks excatly the same as the Riger DB120WL but slighly smaller in size.

Do Not Attempt The Firmware Upgrade On This Model

Always confirm your modem's make/model before proceeding.

After flash, I put default settings, and then enter streamyx login info, but i can't connect to internet.

" These VCI/VPI -> 0/35, is important "
I have done all steps w/o above 1 step, i cannot connect internet.
If found duplicate when change setting to 35, please change to other VPI to other number (i put 36).

Now it's ok already! rclxm9.gif

Hey peeps, interested to see the modem can be flashed with tp-link firmware.

Anyone can help me out to look at the DDNS section on the newly installed TP-LINK web interface, is there an option to change the service provider of the provider other than dyndns.com?

My only reason to flash it to the tp-link firmware is to be able to use the ddns other than dyndns. I've another tp-link wifi router that has that function built-in.

thanks peeps

Saw that TP Link released a newer firmware TD-W8951ND_V5_141114.

http://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download...ersion=V5#tbl_j

Tried flashing it but unable to connect to the wireless network after upgrade.

Downgraded back to TD-W8951ND_V5_140306 and now it's working fine.

Any insight anyone?

most of the times, the firmware updates are for router routing function, less or none of the updates are for sync, bridge functions.

@Anime4000 how u disable the 3 other SSID? total got 4 included mine SSID. i already choose broadcast SSID: NO for the 3 SSID

when u using hp search for wifi u can't see the 3 SSID but it still exist. wifi analyzer stated got extra 3 SSID overlapping on ur main SSID which can so how interference. now i filtered out 3 MAC for the extra SSID.

v6 is out but i tried flashed 4 different ras files all failed & not compatible.

Yup, the same one, The model name - ADSL-RIGER_DB120WL.
Maybe I did wrong with the settings, like maybe VCI/VPI.
Which I would like to make a correction about the VCI/VPI, it's the other way round right??
Should be VPI/VCI right???

Hmm, other setting i need to change? Changing the vci/vpi doesn't work it seems. Still can't connect to the internet.

Edit:Ah nevermind. It works now, my bad.

But i was wondering, diagnostic shows fail for:

1)ATM OAM segment ping
2)ATM OAM end to end ping
3)ATM OAM F4 segment ping
4)ATM OAM F4 end to end ping

Not an IT expert here, what's that suppose to mean anyway?

ATM = Asynchronous Transfer Mode
I believe these was blocked/not supported by TM.
Simply see DSL, up = have connection.

Speed increase? no... but modem more efficient and more secure, if you don't flash, people can Brute Force/Hydra your modem from REMOTE to gain access, for example:
CODE
hydra 60.48.46.248 http-form-post "/Forms/TM2Auth_1:LoginNameValue=^USER^&LoginPasswordValue=^PASS^:F=TM2Auth.htm" -L username.txt -P password.txt -t 128 -w 30 -o rigerhacked.txt

username.txt
CODE
tmadmin

password.txt (65536 possible password)
CODE
Adm@0000
Adm@0001
...
Adm@FFFF

Make sure after flash, do factory reset, it destroy all vulnerable TM setting to secured TP Link settings smile.gif
Good Luck!

this modem has multiple channel, try see number 3, because error said has duplicate VCI/VPI
I still using TD-W8951_V5_140226 and I set as modem only, since having router. so far no issue about CRC error or spike...

aside to add extra bandwidth,
currently I exploiting Maxis, no active air time, basic internet give 64Kbps (8KB/s) but I get 192kbps (24KB/s).
pretty much, this free, thinking to buy another sim and exploit again...

i'm maxis fanboy. i'm quite satisfied with maxis line. apparently, 1GB really not enough for me but the speed at my area is consider ok. if at klcc area the speed is superior.

monthly streamyx RM 110 cos free call + 1MBPS really slow

SNR Margin:18.0 20.1 db
Line Attenuation:52.7 30.7 db

if windows pppoe ipv6 via bridge mode, youtube ipv6 full speed no problem.

speedtest and normal web surf ipv6 via router mode full speed no problem, [ONLY] youtube via ipv6 router mode has extreme slow speed issue.

login credential also changed, become (admin, admin) biggrin.gif

I just found this trick.

Hi anime4000, i have this exact model. I need your help or anybody, how can i set speed limit to certain device? Currently using riger.4. I know about mac address reservation but I can't find it in the modem interface. And as far as i know, other modem seems easy to configure this as there's option such 'speed management' but this modem doesn't have that option. Any workaround? Thanks

This modem is cheap device, can't have premium feature... like speed management or advance QoS

flashed to TD-W8951ND_V5_141114

i configured everything correctly, everything working but my laptop not able to detect the wifi.

reflash reset try everything still same, then i keep the modem in store...

now i reflash and try again, finally found the problem. the wifi region i left it at default which is US, cannot change to Malaysia. If change to Malaysia my laptop can't detect the wifi again.

1 question, how to enable ipv6? i can't find it anywhere.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Easy Guide start here:
Read carefully to avoid invalid or mistake during updating

1. Download Firmware
Download TP-LINK TD-W8951ND v5 firmware from TP-Link Websites

2. Extract
Open zip file and then open "TD-W8951ND_V5_140226 & TD-W8951ND_V5_140306" folder, extract "TD-W8951_V5_140306" folder (simply click once and drag)
Attached Image

UPDATE:
Means: Use RAS file inside "TD-W8951_V5_140226" first, then you can proceed to use "TD-W8951_V5_140306"

3. Login
Note: Do this only when computer connected via LAN Cable (Hardwired)
Username: tmadmin
Password: Adm@**** (**** is the last 4 HEX digit of MAC Address, eg: D1E3 => Adm@D1E3, you can find bottom of your DB120-WL)
Attached Image

4. Click maintenance
After successful login, click maintenance and then click Firmware, until you see this page:
Attached Image

5. Choose firmware
Click New Firmware Location: "Browse" button and then locate back where you extract just now, and then open that folder and choose "ras" file
Attached Image

6. Proceed!
Click "UPGRADE" button! and wait until you see a progress bar!
Attached Image

7. Update complete
Once progress bar reach 100% and it will redirect to new TP-Link login page!
Please login using previous username and password (it's look awkward when login using tmadmin under TP-Link page, lol)
Attached Image

8. Finished!
Well done, now you have working DB120-WL with TP-Link Firmware! TP-Link will use your previous configuration.

9. Improve Wireless Security + Device Security
After flashing and login with old password "Adm@XXXX", simply reset to factory default, this will:
1. Remove extra Virtual or Guest Wireless/AP, leaving only one.
2. Using default TP-Link settings, including default username and password (admin, admin)
3. Overall stability!

Here what I done...

Found the solution, choose the other RAS file in the other folder. We have a different revision of firmware for the modem. Now I'm on V5 with TD-W8951_V5_140226.

Leaving this here so no one has to suffer with the issue of flashing the same file again and again and not knowing what to do

I just logged in to show my appreciation for TS.
Sir, thank you very very very very much for this idea of updating the firmware.
It solved the problem of random disconnection during gaming like, INSTANTLY!
The firmware really stabilize the Riger router.

I can now play games with no insecure feeling of getting random disconnect during gaming.
This update is very recommended for everyone.
Just follow the easy steps and, enjoy!

Edit: Solved below

I upgraded the firmware following this guide many months ago, but I've never reset it to factory settings. It has not give me any problem until today after the reset, I can't connect to the internet anymore (the light for internet is constantly on and DSL is off).

What I did:

1. Reset to factory default settings
2. Run quick start wizard
3. Change time zone, enter username and password, change vpi value from 8 to 0 (0/35), setup wlan then save
4. Change channel to Malaysia

Any idea what am I missing? I tried deactivating all the PVC except PVC0 and set it to 0/35 as well but no luck.

If you didn't reset to factory default after flashing, you will suffer with TM WiFi back doors, people can use your internet without need to crack

I already test all v5 firmware update. This is my experience:

TD-W8951_V5_140226 - not too much speed differences with default riger setting

TD-W8951_V5_140306 - boost the download and upload speed by more than 40x faster. But not for too long, download speed back to regular and leave upload speed still boost up to 40x faster.

TD-W8951ND_V5_141114 - cant access the internet whatever i do.

TD-W8951ND_V5_160113 - internet only can be access by cable with speed almost 50x faster on download and upload, but wireless is pretty much useless because wifi not detectable whatever i do.

So now im using TD-W8951_V5_140306 firmware. Its such a pain to watch the download still like before and upload now just about 10x faster.
I dont know where is my mistake, i follow all the suggested steps.
What i know clearly is im having a headache rclxub.gif lol.

Attached Image

Here what I done...

ok, my Riger DB120-WL suddently cannot online and unable to ping last night, this morning i reset it and able to login and do setting, but failed to ping or open 192.168.1.1 again after i off and on, so i tried to google and found here.
here what i did:

1. i follow everything Anime4000 wrote which is Download TP-LINK TD-W8951ND v5 firmware

2. then follow ngkhanmein step which is "1st we need to flash TD-W8951_V5_140226 then only can flash TD-W8951_V5_140306.. now everything is working with the latest firmware."

3. everyone also like to have LATEST firmware so i continue write every words in this thread. and i found the latest firnware = TD-W8951ND_V5_160113 at TP-LINK Website

4. success flash to latest firmware and cannot online, then i read Anime4000 Post #140 , so i deactivate all the PVC1 - PVC7 , then set PVC0 to 0/35 and done, its online. REFER photo B where to deactivate those PVC1

5. CyrusWong Post #137 (Go to "Advanced Setup" -> "ADSL") i use same with CyrusWong setting only, i tried other ADSL2 or ADSL2+ all cannot online

6. write so much 'repeated' step is scare next time i wan to use i can refer back here.

I hate this piece of shiit. Now i hv to reset it almost every day in order for it to work. If not, it will hang and either:
- cannot even see the ssid online, or
- can connect to modem but cannot online

using LAN cable, connect to modem, go to setting and reset everything back to factory, do the whole setup once more, then it is fine. what kind of non-sense is this? why suddenly i hv to do all this? for the past few weeks it has been fine.

bear in mind, this router has very weak CPU (SoC Chip) and NAT (Network Address Translation) is CPU consuming, when you 200 peer/client connected to your PC, NAT will use so much CPU load, because translate Internal to External IP and vice-versa

If you want 200+ connection, buy decent router or x86 (Intel/AMD) based router

Hello - i'm not a tech savvy and need some help/info. I'm having Riger 4 DB120-WL. My area only supports Streamyx 4mbps and the connection get slow due to hackers. I was informed by TM technical support to buy TP Link modem as it's not easy to hack. But i saw these thread on TP Link firmware. Will this block those intruders? Thank you for your reply.

I have a Riger 120 that cannot be powered up. It's not the power adapter issue. TM gave me the Innatech 7100. Externally, both look the same. But internally, I'm not sure because the interface looks different. Is it possible to swap the parts from Innatech to Riger to revive the Riger?
Really wanna try custom firmware. I doubt there's custom firmware for my current Innatech.

(I love custom firmware after using ROOter on my TPLink MR3420)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Easy Guide start here:

May i know what does the term "flash" means?

Pls help. Urgent. I cant connect to Internet after updating firmware. First i copied the ras file 140306 but got "Error to upload it to router". Then i tried with ras file 140226, it successfully upload then i did factory reset by pressing the reset button which is the tiny hole behind the modem (hope this is correct). Then the lights went off and came back but only the Wifi and Internet lights are blinking but not DSL light. Then the TM logo is in RED color all the while since i upgrade to firmware. Thank you.

Thank you for prompt reply. You are right. I can connect to internet but the connection on my phone shows like poor connection as in grey color. Is the VPI & VCI in Status tab - WAN option? Btw i use Fing app to find out whether there are intruders. Is this accurate? I'm still seing hackers on my network sad.gif

If the VPI & VCI is in Status tab under WAN option then it is configured to 0/35.
The issue now is with hackers. Pls advise, thanks.

When i set Wifi to 802.11n; i needed to set the Encryption to AES as it doesn't allow TKIP and WES. I set the bandwidth to 20MHz. I also set the Channel to United States as i saw someone recommending that in this thread. Sadly i still see one hacker for now. Earlier were about 3 to 4 of them. Thank you and appreciate your respond. Pls advise further.

Btw for Broadcast SSID; i cant choose "No" as then i myself wont be able to connect.
