Bro...this is dlink. ..rm 385..synology cheapest also double the price....
I believe it's the processing power or buffering not enough...no such issue when using pc to stream pointing to the same NAS as mentioned above...

Btw, the file I test above 10GB.
*
Than don't complain. You know that good thing not cheap. If a Synology is rm600+ can do the job, than just save another rm300+.

It is not true that " Forget about NAS streaming HD movies...." I been streaming HD movie from NAS over many yrs. the media player can't hold that much HD movie.

You so lansi for what? I am just sharing info here. It's not like i know the performance of this thing until i actually use it. So you have one that works for you, great. If you don't have knowledge about other models. STFU. It just show your stupidity by assuming all NAS has same performance. laugh.gif

And you quoted me out of context:
QUOTE
Forget about NAS streaming HD movies....they don't have the processing power to do it or the streaming application sucks.... Haiz...Maybe those high-end NAS will do better.

I was simpy referring to my model......some people so perasan.... doh.gif

To other people interested in sharing info(not just to show off how powderful and expensive his NAS is or being perasan....):

Some further testing on the 327L reveals:
1) The previous problem with the HD video streaming from NAS-->Android box seems to be resolved with using a different app (ES File Explorer) by just reading directly from the folder...i am not sure how's the protocol in this works, maybe it bypass the UPNP thing. Now it is as good as streaming from my PC using TVERSITY. Previously, i was using SKIFTA as client to stream from the NAS.
2) Another thing i discovered, the file previously having problem streaming directly from NAS has a DTS-ES soundtrack...for some reason, streaming from the DLINK UPNP can't passthrough this soundtrack. I tried another file with only DTS and it seems fine.

Solution:
1) Use PC to stream using TVERSITY for all movies will work 100% (but means PC needs to turn on).
2) Stream directly to Android Box using ES Explorer (add the path to the network) and play directly as shared file using MX Player.

Possible cause:
Probably UPNP in the DLINK not enough processing power or can't handle some soundtrack format.

Oh... good info, didn't know Android uses UPNP to stream, kinda stupid to force the NAS to work harder, read directly using SMB is a better choice I think, just like using the ES File Explorer.
Can you now seek the movie without pause too much? (Jump chapters, forward)
You using Gbps LAN right? hmm.gif
DNS-327L uses some very low-end embedded CPU (Marvell Armada 300: http://www.marvell.com/embedded-processors/armada-300/) sweat.gif

Usually i use Skifta, that doesn't have SMB. Yes, definitely on Gigabit LAN. Will try to test the skip/pause thing later tonight.

For comparison between 320L and 327L, the UI in 327L is a lot faster and responsive btw...well at least some of money got it's value back...smile.gif

Bought a new Dns-327L...much better writing speed...around 60MB/s....unfortunately, streaming HD from this device is still a no-no...video will halt momentary every now and then just like the DNS-320l. I don't think it's a bandwidth or read speed not fast enough issue.

If i share a folder from the NAS and stream from my PC using TVERSITY, then there is no issue and can play smoothyly...
This will even use up more bandwidth with data transfer from NAS->PC--->Android Box, yet it does better.

My conclusion: Forget about NAS streaming HD movies....they don't have the processing power to do it or the streaming application sucks.... Haiz...Maybe those high-end NAS will do better.

I am using a DLINK DNS-320 with 2 x 3 TB drives. I have stuttering issues when streaming HD movies via normal SMB share (windows workgroup share). But if I switch it to NFS share, the result improved tremendously! I can stream a 4 GB 1080p mkv file with barely any jerkiness.

However I am using raspberry pi on XBMC as my media player, that might be the difference here.

I think it has nothing to do with Rasberry pi or XBMC. The DLINK works better with NFS protocol i think. When i use ES EXPLORER to access the file, maybe it's NFS protocol in the works? (not sure) Hence the much improvement. My files over 10GB.

Sharing my experience of streaming HD files (max file is 35GB 1080p bluray remux) from my NAS. Using Dlink DNS-343 (2Tb*4) and my latest addition is Seagate BlackArmor 440 (3Tb*4), both on RAID-5.

Both streaming HD files with no lags at all, using SMB. All other services is turned off. Using DNS 343 for the last 3 years+ with no issues. Despite what other people ranted about the BlackArmor, I find no issues on stability so far, except for the power adapter dead within 1st week of usage (decided to get a reputable 3rd party power adapter instead of claiming warranty, beggars cannot be choosers for a cheapo 4 bay NAS on sale RM599). Yes, the write speed is slower than average NAS but read speed is good enough for HD streaming and that is all that matters for a NAS with redundancy feature for me. Just make sure firmware is updated to latest beforehand. I stream on Gb LAN and 5Ghz Wifi. Playback devices are Windows based PC with Windows Media Center, and low powered machine using XBMC.

viewnet stock clearance in lowyat. bought it last month thumbup.gif

i did a test for the RAID feature before I confidently dumped my data into it. copying 100GB data to it, and during halfway operation I unplugged one of the HDD. copying persists but warning on the LCD and console (also to my email) that RAID degraded. After finished copying with only 3 HDD, I replugged the 4th HDD, it rebuilds flawlessly. After rebuild I shut down and repowered, the system still works as intended.

If you are going with RAID 5, I would suggeat you back up your precious photos and videos elsewhere. If the NAS die...all your data in HDD bye bye...if Raid 1, you still can pull it out and use as standalone disk elsewhere.
Anyay..Rm600 cheap...what is the write speed you achieved?

not really bye bye, can rebuild it on a PC with recovery software brows.gif

achieved writespeed 15MB/s averagely sweat.gif took me around 5 days to transfer all 7Tb of data

Is it? Never tried before. But you need to connect all 4 HHD to recover and rebuld the RAID? Still, it's dangerous, don't want to take suh risks with my precious data. If downloaded movies never mind...don't even bother to RAID...just dump all in a USB Box only. Can always download back...tongue.gif

15MB/s...i think about same rate with the 320L....best can go up to 20MB/s i think.

I am also having this concern therefore i just re-use my old DNS323 + 1.5TB (JBOD) + Fun_Plug + RSYNC to build a rsync server to backup my Synology.
But the rsync transfer speed is Sooooooo slow..... average 2MB/s sad.gif

Using any 3 out of the 4 hdd will do in order to recover the stripped data. any type of setup also will have risk, up to us to weigh the risk factor.

yes, the speed is pretty similar to 320L but 320L in my experience can have a much higher read throughput compared to the seagate black armor. (20-25MB/s for blackarmor vs 30-35MB/s 320L)

What software do you use for the recovery?

Yeah, under certain condition the 320L can read up to 60MB/s...i think depends on file size...smaller files/bigger files will affect the speed. I remember i can achieve 40MB/s to 60MB/s from the 320l when copying to my USB 3.0 box connected to my PC.

The rsync backup is initiated by Synology backup application. Seems like rsync is slow and should manually copy the data like you mentioned, then subsequent incremental / differential backup can be handled by rsync.

Fully agree! If you just want NAS for storage, I think DLink is doing pretty good job. Transfer rate is fast on Gigabits LAN too.
*
I think best bang for the buck is the HP Microserver. N36L or N40L if you can still get them Can run your own choice of OS and in a way not subjected to proprietary software in the event of a recovery. Upgrade memory and be close to a powerful higher budgeted NAS.

2MB/s? If your internet bandwidth is fast enough, use that instead. If the data is not important, you can always redownload.
