Best to get the Green series for CCTV, WDC AV-GP series is designed for CCTV purpose, good for 24/7 running, also 1-year more warranty than the normal Green series.

At the end, i bought RED and lets hope the extra money give me peace of mind smile.gif

Just finished setup my new Synology DS213j 3TB (WD-RED) - RAID 1 last weekend and migrated all my files from my old D-Link DNS323 500GB - RAID1.
Tested the single file (5.29GB) transfer from my iMac to DS213j via Gigabit LAN. Time spent about 2 mins and the writing speed to NAS is average 60MB/s to 85MB/s, highest speed rate at 100MB/s.
I am very pleased with the result of my upgrade! smile.gif

Hi all, i'm new with NAS system. i bought a synology ds213j running RAID 1. Here's the question i hv:
1. how to setup 'remote access' ? my router is innacomm w400v6 (free frm TM when apply streamxy)
2. How to set the router configuration?
*
I am using the DS213j as well.
What kind of remote access you are referring?
How you plan to remote access your NAS? via what app?

I am using iOS Synology DS Apps, i just port forward 5000 and 5005 from my router to my NAS and it works over Internet.

RM690... shocking.gif
Ok, possibly just my opinion but kinda expensive, haha...
Not being offence but DIY still kinda feels cheaper... sweat.gif

DLink is a good choice, for a start... hmm.gif

That day i was at Jayacom...there is this dunno Netgear model...4 bay RM 8xx or RM9xx, slightly under RM1k.

Dunno if it's slow like turtle also....forgot model..

RM690 kinda expensive ....Dlink-327 seems like more worthwhile buy...

btw, when you mentioned DIY, do you mean using old PC for NAS?? kinda clunky and big...not too mention power sucking.....not ideal...

OH!! RAID0!! No wonder. sweat.gif
Have you tried non-RAID before? Before you decided on RAID0, or RAID1 transfer speed?  hmm.gif
Anyway I assume you have a huge backup around, RAID0 is only for speed, no redundancy to back it up in case a drive fail.

Have not try non RAID yet tongue.gif

Old PC? Power sucking? LOL, my 24/7 torrenting box is not even more than 30W, DIY PC with the below specs:
Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 1.6GHz, 0.95V
1x 2GB RAM
1x 500GB HDD
3x 2TB HDD
Unknown brand PSU
2x 120mm fan @ 5v mod
CM Elite 310 (M-ATX)
Oh no, PC nowadays is great at power management, not the Pentium 4 era. wink.gif
Future plan is Bitfenix m-ITX case, mainboard though is a pain to find. sweat.gif

May not be anyone cup of tea for DIY, troublesome on the first time setup. doh.gif

C2D does not qualify as "OLD PC" bro... tongue.gif

I don't have any C2D or any PC lying around for that matter...but it is still too bulky. I live in small apartment...dun wanna have another PC box lying around.

I just built an M-ITX rig with an ASROCK mobo for my sis-in-law...quiet big even for M-ITX casing...anyway, it cost RM2K++, so definitely out of my NAS budget to build a new PC just for this.

Bought a new Dns-327L...much better writing speed...around 60MB/s....unfortunately, streaming HD from this device is still a no-no...video will halt momentary every now and then just like the DNS-320l. I don't think it's a bandwidth or read speed not fast enough issue.

If i share a folder from the NAS and stream from my PC using TVERSITY, then there is no issue and can play smoothyly...
This will even use up more bandwidth with data transfer from NAS->PC--->Android Box, yet it does better.

My conclusion: Forget about NAS streaming HD movies....they don't have the processing power to do it or the streaming application sucks.... Haiz...Maybe those high-end NAS will do better.

Bro, since we're using the same NAS perhaps you may help me with this. Can I share my NAS with a friend remotely but only limited folders? I am facing difficulty to set this up.

Depend on your router model, shouldn't be hard to do port forwarding.

Once you have done the port forwarding on your router, then you need to configure your DS213J and install apps on your iOS or Android devices.
For this, refer to this step by step video guide - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsZQV3sSeFY

Since this NAS have Dlna or upnp, it should be streaming alright. Try to check along the line. Router, switch etc.

Snology below rm1k, can stream hd without any problem. Even my old Synology just upgrade the fw can do the HD streaming without problem. But not 3d. Since the bitrate for 3d is much higher. (I still haven't solve the 3d streaming problem. Either router or the NAS)

I don't see any speed figure on this NAS in their website.

Bro...this is dlink. ..rm 385..synology cheapest also double the price....
I believe it's the processing power or buffering not enough...no such issue when using pc to stream pointing to the same NAS as mentioned above...

Btw, the file I test above 10GB.

Fully agree! If you just want NAS for storage, I think DLink is doing pretty good job. Transfer rate is fast on Gigabits LAN too.
