macbook pro lagi expensive for retina edition, maybe you can decide on late 2012 unibody, can upgrade ram & sata 2.5" SSD.

Sequential speed won't prove so much in real-world application.
Most important is the response time in ms (best 1ms or lower) and the 4K Read/Write (higher better).
Wonder if OSX has AS SSD benchmark equivalent which has much thorough testing. hmm.gif

is it a good idea to relocate the user profile from ssd to hdd? since some mention that program like firefox will cause a lot of unnecessary write to the ssd, thus decrease its lifespan. sweat.gif

Firefox is browser or download app?

But at lease can last more than 5 years, not like traditional hdd when new is fast after 1 years plug feel like lagging.

I don't think daily operation will affect the wear cycle that much, unless your firefox is surfing for 24/7 and more than 50 tabs continuous refreshing the content every minute, even so I don't think it'll affect as much as server does (writing several GBs/hour?) sweat.gif

It may affect the performance much, because most operation like file extraction (Winzip/7z/RAR) are extracted to user profile directory, temp files, your save games, personalized programs profile are also stored on same directory.

Just fully utilize your SSD capability, else you spent so many bucks on your SSD for what? either next a a few years you will get a new SSD again.
imho SSD life span are the least worries for normal user.

for the ssd lifespan, like others said, no need to worry about it.

my laptops have at least 3 drives: one is the OS drive (ssd), one is app drive (ssd), and there is a data drive (ssd or hdd). then i create a ram disk for high write operations (temp folder, cache, etc.)

specifically for firefox, i use nightly and stable versions. i install firefox in ssd, my profiles are in hdd, and my firefox cache is in ram disk. this way i can still load firefox fast, but the best of all is that this setup can survive every OS clean install, without losing all my settings, addons, bookmarks, etc. all i need to do is to run 'firefox -P' and point it to the right profile folder.

Last time I used acronis, it'll copy all, even your windows. So I guess there's no need to clean install the OS to your new SSD biggrin.gif

Best is to clean install your OS due to the fact that the OS will be optimized during setup for your SSD.
After install, you'll need to run some optimization again (optional) for much better performance and less wear cycle for your SSD.

Hello people, just wanna ask two things:

1. What is the best SSD right now for gaming? I'm planning to get a 240/250GB model and I play a lot of FPS based games like BF4. So probably something that has very fast and stable read times would be great. Any recommendations?

2. Or, even if there is one good SSD for me, should I refrain from buying any model right now, and wait for 2014 releases? I know Plextor is coming out with their M6 lines to replace the M5, but if other brands like Samsung and SanDisk or Corsair coming out with anything new, and worthwhile waiting for?

Thanks.

Anyone own Samsung or Intel mini sata

From 2.5" to mSATA and now for Mini SATA again.
So far never use 1.8" and mini sata SSD.

Dunno how good or can last longer or durable.. Lol

1. the best is the one that fits your budget. significant improvements can only be observed if you switch from hdd to ssd. between ssd's, in terms of mainstream or enthusiast categories, the differences are not that significant to many people. if you still think consumer grades are not good enough for you, there are still better options, e.g. enterprise grade ssd's, sas/pcie form factors. if you're ok with those price tags, go ahead.

for gaming, other factors should be considered to enhance gaming experience also (especially gpu. cpu, ram, and cooling are also important). ssd is not a cure for all. it just eliminate bottlenecks of hdd.

.. and all of us have preferences. i like samsung 840 pro and plextor m5pro. but that doesn't mean other models or other brands are not good. like our friend here said, each has their advantages and weaknesses. it's up to you to choose which is 'the best' to you.

2. new releases should be a few months away (after june i guess). if you wanna get the new ones, you can start compare the differences of the current and new ssd's. unless there are significant differences, i guess it's fine to get the cheaper ones and be happy, instead of paying premium for new ones. (or else you will have to wait for the price to drop, until which you see yourself repeating the typical waiting cycle again)
