Dell offers the best warranty service because of its next-business-day support, which is very useful for a student who definitely needs his/her laptop all the time
Can consider these:
14"
Dell
Inspiron 14R, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT625M@RM1699[2.33], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), Linux; W8SL@RM1999
Inspiron 14R, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT730M@RM2099[2.33kg], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), Linux; W8SL@RM2299

if you prefer something much ligher and slimmer:
14"
Dell
Vostro 5460, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT630M + (32GB mSATA SSD + 500GB(5400rpm))@RM2199[1.54kg], 4GB, W8SL, 3 cell

* Price in RRP, negotiable
* Use remaining budget to extend warranty to 3 years (~RM250), this one is a MUST, otherwise no point getting a Dell laugh.gif
* Use remaining budget to upgrade to SSD, that will give you a very significant boost in terms of overall computing experience
*
Thanks!

Say if I want a laptop with a larger screen, how much can I get with a budget of 4k?

Hi I'm entering Uni very soon so I'm shopping for a new laptop.
I've rarely used laptop for daily usage since my desktop is enough (HP pavilion p6150d)

1. Any brand will do, as long I get good after sales customer service!!
2. around 3k
3. Uni work + gaming ( dota 2 etc.... )
4. would prefer something 14inch and above

please recommend me some good laptops! biggrin.gif

Dell doesn't really have a lot of 15 inchers nowadays, but you can consider this if you appreciate a FullHD screen brows.gif
15.6"
Dell
Inspiron 15R, i7-3537U + AMD HD8730M + (1920x1980; anti-glare)@RM3299[2.32kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8SL
Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm)@RM3199, 8GB, backlit keyboard optional, W8

The 1st one is more geared towards longer battery life, but weaker performance. The 2nd one is the opposite nod.gif

Again, prices in RRP, negotible
Use remaining budget to extend warranty to 3 years, and also upgrade to SSD thumbup.gif

Can give me some suggestions?

1. Preferred Brand: any will do as long as reliable, as in no much people complain
2. Budget: 1.6k-1.9k
3. Usage: fb, musics, movies, gaming (dota2, L4D max)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: any, but not too small because of gaming
5. Extras: i5, AMD or Nvidia graphic card, good wireless detection, best laptop for this budget, sturdy

And just want to confirm, laptops this range buy in Malaysia cheaper than in Singapore right?

Laptops generally are cheaper in Malaysia than in Singapore due to GST in Singapore.

Thanks, among these, which is the most bang for buck? Because I don't know what the numbers behind the processors or graphic card mean.

btw, I've checked dell website, what's the difference between inspiron 15 and 15r?

Hello there, please help me out here! smile.gif

1. Preferred Brand - Any except Acer

2. Budget - Below RM4k (Preferably)

3. Usage - Gaming (with gaming footage recording), uni work, heavy usage every day and is intended to be my main computer/laptop

4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 15.x inch

5. Primary games (if needed) - Guild Wars 2, LoL (a must to be able to record these 2 games with smooth fps on at least decent graphics settings)

6. Personal research - I have done a little bit of research on my own.
Lenovo Ideapad Y500 seems like a good buy for its specs but after doing a little digging, it seems that users are unhappy with certain issues with it, like trackpad and keyboard issues, as well as not having intel HD 4000 and optimus. (Lenovo Y500 Sucks Thread)
Is it really that bad? Or is it still a worth buy?

7. Another important note - I want superb cooling (because my current laptop has some really bad heating issues (my temps can reach 100°C!)).

That being said, are there any other laptops out there that are suitable for me?

Thanks!

14", freedos, i5, < RM3k?
Not much choice.

Dell
Inspiron 14-3421, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT625M@RM1649[1.99kg], Ubuntu, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 6-cell; W8SL@RM1899
Inspiron 14R, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT625M@RM1699[2.33], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), Linux; W8SL@RM1999
Inspiron 14R, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT730M@RM2099[2.33kg], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), Linux; W8SL@RM2299
Vostro 5460, i5-3230M +Nvidia GT630M@RM1899[1.54kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), Ubuntu 12.04, 3 cell; W8SL@RM2099

MSI
CX41, i5-3210M + AMD HD7670M@RM1799, 2GB,750GB, freedoms

Lenovo
G480, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT635M@RM1699, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), FreeDOS

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

For Photoshop and Corel suites, your friend need CPU+GPU. If there isn't much 3D stuff, the CPU is really important.
If choosing from the list above, the G480 is the best combo.

But seriously, look at this instead:
Acer
V3-571G-736b8G1T, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT730M(DDR3) + (1920x1080 IPS) @RM2899[2.6kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8
For the money, this is the laptop with the best screen around. 15" FHD, IPS, i7 CPU, plus a mid range GPU. Great machine for Photoshop & Corel suites.

my personal preference would be Y400, i7-3630QM with free dos, install windows 7 on it, and upgradeto 8 gb ram... but well, its quite hard to find a place to buy both the laptop with windows 7 on it... If i had the luxury of time to go to lowyat, it would be a done deal...

plus the friend for some reason unknown to human kind, insist on not wanting the i7... *sigh*
