Sounds like me.I prefer Upstream. Will start applying online now, hopefully my early application does not affect my chance of being called for an interview. Any tips for me ?

You can refer to the Schlumberger thread in the forum.. Just be yourself during the interview.

Hi O&G thread users,
I've been a program management engineer for 1.5 years in an MNC production factory (electronics industry) managing R&D products. I enjoy my work as I am always interested in managing products from design up till production stage. But I'm a degree holder in applied chemistry and find myself losing interest in electronic products as chemistry is still my passion.
So I'm wondering if there are any prospects of finding a program management career in the O&G industry (downstream), don't mind if it's office based or offshore. Another concern is my chances as a female candidate, as I think that the O&G is still a male-dominated field (feel free to object to that smile.gif! ).

So hope if you folks could drop some advice on (I would like to stick to this long term, don't like switching jobs or industry)

1. what O&G companies have a solid program management department and how I could start off and succeed in this career path?

2. any other additional set of skills i should be equipped (like a geoscience masters/statistics/PMP?) for higher chances of success, since I only have my chemistry degree, working experience and soft skills with me, haha!

Any other tips and comments are highly appreciated, thank you all in advance!

Cheers and Happy Sunday everyone!

Thanks for the insight. Wont be continuing my degree because of personal reasons. FS sounds like a job i would go for, very interesting. How would you say the job prospect is like for a freshie? future wise, bright?

Seriously top up and get degree. Cos your personal reasons << missed opportunity as a FE.

FE is so big different- gaji and progression way different. Then again, if you really mati2 don't have choice then FS not bad... bersyukur...

Refer to my previous posts. I'm not from SLB,well i wish i was biggrin.gif . From what i've read around here, it can take up some time if you apply through their website. Through Career fair is faster though. Maybe you can call them up and check your status.

if your intention is to join the E&P, a "rojak" academic background(mecha+geoscience) will definitely helps you in later years to come.you can easily integrate what you learnt in the past with what you currently working on if you are involved in field development project. if you intended to pursue pure mechanical engineering course, definitely this will opens up more chances for you to join the O&G as mechanical engineering is a very versatile degree. relatively, a geoscience background might lack in versatility if compare to a mecha background.but at the end, who has the highest probability to have the highest earning power?? brows.gif .well, of course it's highly dependent on your personal characteristics and attitude.

PS:many people likes to eat rojak...rojak is the best thumbup.gif

Hi all. I've been dreaming to join the industry though I'm not an engineering graduate. Branched down to the only three main business lines that I might have a little tiny slight chance to penetrate using my qualification which are the IT, supply chain management and administration.. which I think fresh graduates are less demanded in the industry.. or is it not? sweat.gif

Good evening,

I'm doing my Diploma in Mechanical Engineering(Manufacturing) in Politeknik and will be graduating by the end of 2014. Currently i'm doing good, maintaining CGPA >3.0 and i'm interested in joining the OnG industry, preferably Schlumberger (FE, FS , MT). Question, is it too early to start applying by next January? as I heard the process from applying to interviewing to getting the job can take up a lot of time. I'm trying not to waste time sitting at home once I graduate. And as a freshie to be, how can I stand out among the other students to be accepted for interviews from OnG companies since all of us will have a diploma? Should I go for welding/OSH courses during my holidays and get a few certs? With a diploma can I apply for FE? or am I only eligible for FS and MT.

Thanks in advance.

Yo..
FE:
-Degree Holders
-Much higher Basic salary
-Better Benefits
-Higher learning curve
-Start at Grade 8
-Can obtain Grade 11 in 3-4 years if work hard for it
-Once G11, easy to become Manager/Sales Eng/etc (office based)

FS:
-Diploma Holders
-Much higher rig bonus
-Start at Grade 7
-Slightly longer to reach Grade 11, usually 5-6 years or longer
-Meant to be in the field longer, so Managers would prefer not to promote you to G11 quickly so you could spend longer time in the field
-By the time you finish Degree (lets say 3 years), if you worked as FS, you would have bought a house, a car and probably don't know what else to do with your money

These rare cases are usually because the Degree might not be suitable for the job. And diploma might have been.
Or Degree qualification was not good enough.

But if that is not the case and your friends holds a BEng, they might wanna consider asking HR to upgrade them to FE.
Some kinda mistake or Hiring manager just want to hire FS regardless of their higher qualification...

It depends. I doubt that if you become a geologist in Petronas you would spend much time offshore. You will get to go but mostly for familiarisation purposes. It won't be the key part of your work. Most of the offshore work have been outsourced to service providers. Previously there was a well-sitting unit (that is where you spend 2-3 weeks offshore during the drilling of the wells) but I think well sitting has been outsourced.
