Good evening,

I'm doing my Diploma in Mechanical Engineering(Manufacturing) in Politeknik and will be graduating by the end of 2014. Currently i'm doing good, maintaining CGPA >3.0 and i'm interested in joining the OnG industry, preferably Schlumberger (FE, FS , MT). Question, is it too early to start applying by next January? as I heard the process from applying to interviewing to getting the job can take up a lot of time. I'm trying not to waste time sitting at home once I graduate. And as a freshie to be, how can I stand out among the other students to be accepted for interviews from OnG companies since all of us will have a diploma? Should I go for welding/OSH courses during my holidays and get a few certs? With a diploma can I apply for FE? or am I only eligible for FS and MT.

Thanks in advance.

No, it is not. SLB hire throughout the year. There are many stages of interview so apply early. Welding courses doesnt help if you going to apply for FS in SLB. A degree is required to apply for FE.

Thank you for your reply. What does a FS do specifically? Does it branch out in any way?

Depends on which segment of you join. Due to the nature of SLB business, FS will be doing upstream operation like logging, drilling. Most the time, FS is the helper of FE. I would say most of FS started in wireline and D&M. Thats just the starting point, you may end up become a field service manager, recruiter etc.. It is flexible in SLB.

Anyway, I'd encourage you to further your study to degree level.. for better career path.

Thanks for the insight. Wont be continuing my degree because of personal reasons. FS sounds like a job i would go for, very interesting. How would you say the job prospect is like for a freshie? future wise, bright?

For a diplome freshie, the job prospect is good. If you like hands on job and ready to go offshore, this is for you. Your learning attitude determine your future. You will not stay as a FS forever. Lots of chance in this company.

Sounds like me.I prefer Upstream. Will start applying online now, hopefully my early application does not affect my chance of being called for an interview. Any tips for me ?

Seriously top up and get degree. Cos your personal reasons << missed opportunity as a FE.

FE is so big different- gaji and progression way different. Then again, if you really mati2 don't have choice then FS not bad... bersyukur...

What about FS ? i heard the pay is big too, especially their allowance? i guess both FE and FS has its own Pros ?

Refer to my previous posts. I'm not from SLB,well i wish i was biggrin.gif . From what i've read around here, it can take up some time if you apply through their website. Through Career fair is faster though. Maybe you can call them up and check your status.

Yo..
FE:
-Degree Holders
-Much higher Basic salary
-Better Benefits
-Higher learning curve
-Start at Grade 8
-Can obtain Grade 11 in 3-4 years if work hard for it
-Once G11, easy to become Manager/Sales Eng/etc (office based)

FS:
-Diploma Holders
-Much higher rig bonus
-Start at Grade 7
-Slightly longer to reach Grade 11, usually 5-6 years or longer
-Meant to be in the field longer, so Managers would prefer not to promote you to G11 quickly so you could spend longer time in the field
-By the time you finish Degree (lets say 3 years), if you worked as FS, you would have bought a house, a car and probably don't know what else to do with your money
*
This i great! Thanks for the info man. Running through/touching up my CV , uploading it to SLB soon. If i get the job,Probably wont be needing a car,i have a proton which can get me to places, enough already biggrin.gif a house, in the near future. The rest of the money? Gonna chuck it in FD and get me a few properties for a better future tongue.gif

Whats the career development like for Diploma holders, Mechanical Engineering? I want to work offshore/out of Malaysia if given the opportunity. Experience/skill gained offshore applicable to onshore ? Any company that hire diploma holders that sends them to offshore? besides the Big Fishes.

Operating company such as exxon has the production, drilling technologist for dip holders.

Service company such as baker hughes has the field specialist position that really travel and working offshore. Others like hal, slb, weatherford etc i believe also have position for the dip holders.

Or you can take other certificates such as NDT.

I think there are many oppurtunity for dip holders out there, just need to search and dig more.
*
Thanks. What about smaller companies ?

For NDT, whats the job position/prospect/career development/upstream or downstream?

I would say take certs that are not trade-specific, because as a diploma holder you are over-qualified for tradesmen or roughneck jobs. E.g. trades are like riggers, scaffolders, welders, cutters; each requires different certs.

Instead, take the offshore course that is absolutely essential for working offshore, mainly the BOSIET. A medical report is also needed to go offshore, but w/o knowing who your future employer is, you might want to put a hold on that as some employers have preferred clinics. I'm not sure if your medical report needs to be completed prior to taking the BOSIET.
*
Thanks for the reply. Will look into several companies to book my BOSIET course asap. Correct me if i'm wrong , but MIS-BOSET(or is it M-BOSET?) cert is only eligible for offshore in Malaysia whereby BOSET is internationally ?
