Seriously, some companies especially in the O&G are looking for people who knows what they are doing. Even if you have zero experience, they can tell if you have spent time tailoring your resume to the specific companies or specific position you are applying for. You do not need to know the scope of work of the position to be able to tailor your CV/Resume ..

This shows to the companies that you have taken time to investigate what the companies do in the industry (niche engineering, fabrications etc etc) and going through this thread and asking some information on some of the companies will help you tailor your CV.

You need to show to the person who is reviewing your CV that you are an innovative person and tailoring your Cv is one of that.

Well said. This is one fact some fresh grads fails to understand. Sending more than 10 applications and not getting a job means you have a problem with your CV. Sending 300+ is useless, it just shows the person does not know what career he/she looking for.

In my case I secured a job from Intern host company but applied for 3 others as contingency and was offered in 2 of them. Many of my friends did the same. I can't imagine tailoring a CV for > 10 companies!

Good evening,

I'm doing my Diploma in Mechanical Engineering(Manufacturing) in Politeknik and will be graduating by the end of 2014. Currently i'm doing good, maintaining CGPA >3.0 and i'm interested in joining the OnG industry, preferably Schlumberger (FE, FS , MT). Question, is it too early to start applying by next January? as I heard the process from applying to interviewing to getting the job can take up a lot of time. I'm trying not to waste time sitting at home once I graduate. And as a freshie to be, how can I stand out among the other students to be accepted for interviews from OnG companies since all of us will have a diploma? Should I go for welding/OSH courses during my holidays and get a few certs? With a diploma can I apply for FE? or am I only eligible for FS and MT.

Thanks in advance.

Yo..
FE:
-Degree Holders
-Much higher Basic salary
-Better Benefits
-Higher learning curve
-Start at Grade 8
-Can obtain Grade 11 in 3-4 years if work hard for it
-Once G11, easy to become Manager/Sales Eng/etc (office based)

FS:
-Diploma Holders
-Much higher rig bonus
-Start at Grade 7
-Slightly longer to reach Grade 11, usually 5-6 years or longer
-Meant to be in the field longer, so Managers would prefer not to promote you to G11 quickly so you could spend longer time in the field
-By the time you finish Degree (lets say 3 years), if you worked as FS, you would have bought a house, a car and probably don't know what else to do with your money

but there are cases like a few of my friends got hired as a field specialist even they are holding a degree.do you know why?
*
These rare cases are usually because the Degree might not be suitable for the job. And diploma might have been.
Or Degree qualification was not good enough.

But if that is not the case and your friends holds a BEng, they might wanna consider asking HR to upgrade them to FE.
Some kinda mistake or Hiring manager just want to hire FS regardless of their higher qualification...

What's with FE vs FS? You think you're too good to become just FS when you know the minimum requirement is diploma? Wah wah wah.......
*
It is true that one person is not better than the other for having a Degree. FS do make alot at the end of the day compared to FE. But it will also mean the Degree he obtained has no value and that sucks.. On the other hand, if he would have said he wants to stay in field as long as possible, they might have given him FS just coz of that

hye.. actly how to answer an interview questions about our private life? for example "do you have a girlfriend?".. some ong company always ask their single status candidate.. do they just want to test our commitment toward offshore/field works? or maybe there are some other reasons??

*
Many O&G company which hires fresh grads to work offshore will eventually find many new recruits resigning over the period of 2 years. During the exit interview, most of the time the reason will be to spend more time with Gf/Wife.

Not that they are slave driven company but its just business. Most likely those who aren't single will be a bad investment.
If they ask you during an interview, reply as the following:
"Single, no commitment to personal relationships."
