To all taiko here...
I got a question from my friend who intends to get a job in Singapore. He has over 10 years experiences in accounting and finance and is one of the Senior Management staff in listed company. However, he has never worked in Singapore. Some of his concerns are as follow: 1) Would it be challenging for someone like him to get a job in Singapore since his overseas experiences is zero (only have Malaysian company experience)? 2) If he get a job, is it likely that he will get a lower ranking position or lower salary since Malaysian is experience is not considered “in par” with Singaporean? 3) What are the main challenges when switching from Malaysian working cultural to the Singaporean’s? Thanks for contributing. This post has been edited by KOHTT: Jun 23 2013, 10:22 PM |

QUOTE(keeystar @ Jun 23 2013, 09:38 PM) Thx for your reply. my working place will be around concourse, and since i never been to sg, im kinda blur with those places lol.. O, Concourse is 2-3 minutes walk from Nicoll Highway MRT (circle line - orange colour). Lavender MRT will be 15 minutes walk (green colour line). So you can find house around this 2 MRT stations if you commute to work by MRT. Stay at Beach Road then you can walk to work.the single room 500 including utilities? can i have the landlord contact or any webpage for reference? btw, the living expenses there expensive? (like foods) I found mine through agent. The house I staying full already. 500 include utilities, but no air con. Go to the first post in this thread, got few links for rooms provided by TS. Food is cheap if you eat at the nearby food court, 3-4 dollar for lunch and dinner. Cheapest 2.5 if you really want to save. |

QUOTE(deodorant @ Jun 23 2013, 04:22 PM) http://www.mom.gov.sg/foreign-manpower/pas...tification.aspx Noted with thanks.."The Employment Pass Eligibility Certificate (EPEC) scheme has been discontinued since 1 December 2011. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) no longer accept any applications or appeals for this scheme." So no, you won't be able to apply for the LTVP based on EPEC scheme. After your last day with current employer they will cancel your work pass and I believe you are issued a 30-days valid white card (the same as any tourist) so you need to leave singapore within that 30 days. And yes, you need to also give notice to your landlord that you are leaving. Your contract should have a 'diplomatic clause' written in that says something like you can break contract if you are forced to exit SG due to no more valid work pass. |

QUOTE(seantang @ Jun 21 2013, 03:08 PM) The Berjaya Air flight to Redang at 3pm yesterday was cancelled at 2:55pm because of "weather conditions". Was on the same FY3546 flight The Firefly flight to Subang at 3.30pm was initially scheduled to be delayed until they boarded early at 3pm. To beat the worsening haze I think. My 3pm Firefly flight to Ipoh was delayed until we boarded at 3:30pm. Sat on the runway for another 30 minutes waiting for takeoff clearance. Luckily we were allowed to take off instead of being asked to return to the gate. Today is worse than yesterday. And if tomorrow is as bad as today... I'd say you'd be in for a 50:50 touch and go experience. Luckily no cancellation as flying alone with my toddler. tomorrow returning to sg |

He has over 10 years experiences in accounting and finance and is one of the Senior Management staff in listed company. However, he has never worked in Singapore. 1 & 2... Depends on which company he's from, and what is his experience. Generally, the companies in Singapore don't think highly of their counterparts in other countries. Malaysia included, although not as bad as our Asean neighbours or India or China. But they certainly don't think our companies have equal standards, service quality and professional ethics as Singaporean, Hong Kong, Japanese or ANZ companies... especially the ethics. However, within the industry and within companies at par (eg. coming from the KL office of a global MNC to the Sg office of the same or similar global MNC), the equivalency of your value is much more appreciated. 3. The biggest challenge, in my opinion and from an ethnic Chinese perspective, is the realisation that those attributes that made you stand out in Malaysia and handed you an auto-win over 70% of the Malaysian population (ie. the hunger or motivation to work hard because you know you will starve if you don't, being trilingual and for many, having a foreign degree) is effectively neutralised in Singapore. Everybody speaks English (in most cases better than you, 75% speak Mandarin (in most cases better than you) and the entire population of this generation has at least a poly diploma or better. On top of that, Singapore is home to hundreds of thousands of highly qualified first and second generation immigrants that are all too willing to take your job away from you. The competition, therefore, is stiff! |

Hi taikos.. *raise hand*
I've been invited to an interview by a company. The first interview went quite well and I can see the interviewer likes me very much. He has also said that if I were hired then he'd be my supervisor. However, I still need to have an interview with the department manager before I could secure the job. So he said he will forward my documents and resumes to the department manager and if the DM wants to have an interview with me, the HR will contact me. *The interview lasted for 45 minutes FYI* *5 hrs after the interview ended* and the HR called me to have an interview with the DM. So I had my second interview session conducted by the DM this time few hours ago. These were the questions being asked by the DM. *Intro yourself *Tell me about your family members - where they are working, how much is their pay *Tell me your hobbies *Tell me what is the most exciting moment in your university life *Tell me what is the most depressed moment in your university life *Tell me why the reason why you have applied for job in our company *Do you know how is the working environment here? Ok so those are the questions. However, none of the questions discussed about the job position that I applied. Other than those questions, we chit chat about other non-relevant stuff. The interview lasted for 30 mins and all I felt was the DM was trying to 敷衍 me.. According to the first interviewer (supervisor), if I pass thru the DM and If I were selected, my application would still need to be processed by the HR department but however, the process wouldn't be taking too long (in around a week). BUT According to the DM, he still need to have a meeting with dunno who and who before confirmation of my application. The process takes about 2 weeks to a month. (much longer time) Anyway, I might be worried too much but do you think I still stand a chance of getting the job? As what my frens said, my chance of securing the job is much much higher as I made it to the second interview after all. What say you? This post has been edited by shiyau: Jun 24 2013, 11:47 PM |
