Recently I got an offer from a consultant eng firm with a starting salary of SGD2800. Initially I though it was okay and I assume that  most company will have a standard pay for new hire... so I don't really bother to negotiate...

but... people told me that the salary is way below market rate for Singapore standard... and the rent there is freaking expensive sad.gif
Now I feel kinda stupid and feel that I'm being taken advantage of...

My academic qualification is fairly above average and I am currently attached with a MNC in Malaysia... but after 6 months I fell like I'm not really learning anything and I was bored... that's when I decided  to explore my options else where...

but now I'm having second thoughts about the offer but I feel obliged honor my agreement with the SG company...

Any advice for some one who is just starting out like me  icon_question.gif  icon_question.gif  icon_question.gif

Which field? Company name too if you don't mind hehe. Consultant engineer low starting pay is quite common, I saw resume with asking salary much lower than yours with 2 years exp. My new colleague a bit higher than yours, but she local postgrad.

Hi I need some advice about working in SG again...

I've recently signed an offer for a 2 year contract position with an S pass. But i'm worried if the company decided to just terminate me within that period so that they do not need to increase my pay... I would really appreciate it if fellow lyn members here could kindly clarify some of my questions:

- Will I be able to seek employment elsewhere with the same pass or do I need to reapply again?
- If I reject the current offer, will I still be able to work in SG since the company has already applied for a pass for me.
- regarding the tax issue, for the first 183 days before year of assessment, I am considered as a non resident. So for the first 60 days, i do not need to pay any tax but from the 61 to 182 days my tax will be fixed at 15%; and only from the 183 days onward will I be regarded as a tax resident. Am I right, or is there anything else that I miss out. 15% tax out of 2.8k is damn high  cry.gif
*
Since you signed then cannot turn back. I assume there are some exit clause if you quit within this 2 year you need to pay some penalty?

Company should not hold your salary for your income tax in SG? You pay your own tax yourself next April.

You worry too much. You do geotechnical design with so many uncertainties you no need to sleep at night. biggrin.gif

Firefly having a RM99 (one way) promo for flights booked 30 days in advance. For SIN-IPH, everyday except Fridays and Saturdays. For IPH-SIN, everyday except Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.

Booked all the way to CNY next year already since it's available for booking. The website can now book 12 months in advance, up from 6 months in the past.

That's really cheap. Singapore airport tax alone cost 32-34 sgd, about 80 rm already. Sweep up all my tick until next year for Airasia but cheapest was 60-70 sgd to Sabah (32 sgd tax and 20 sgd fuel surcharge then the left over is ticket price), that's during the 12.01am 0 seat opening day, stay up whole night and jamming the server with others.

Will not knowing Mandarin be a hindrance to your career in SG?
My Chinese ain't really good... but on the bright side, at least I can force myself to pick it up bit by bit over there....

If you go down to site, yes, plus hokkian, singlish, thai, tagalog, tamil and bangla language. If you stay in your ivory tower then English is sufficient.

hi guys, i just got an offer from a Singapore company and they said they will apply a S pass for me if the quota is still available.

After i get back from the interview, i used MOM website's Self Assessment Tool and the result stated that I am likely to qualify for both Employment Pass (EP) and S Pass.

However, i noticed that the basic requirement for Employment Pass (EP) is to earn a monthly salary of SGD 3k, but my salary is way below that figure, does that mean i still qualified for the Employment pass according to the self assessment tools?

and besides that, what is the major differences of EP and S pass.
*
Below 3k mean not eligible for EP.

Both allow you to work. EP can use fast immigration lane, bring in family members.

Of course salary is not determined by exp and education, it depends on job. But your job depends on exp and education level. So it definitely relates.
Not just tax, what about things like epf etc, I've came to understand that some company promises a salary before the tax deduction (charged to employer), this is not suppose to be the case as that cost is supposed to be taken care of by the company. They should inform you of the real salary (not sure if you get what I mean).
Your income tax is paid by you and not company. Company doesn't know which category you are in as you may have other income/deduction. CPF also depend on you if you want to apply PR/SC or not, and how much to contribute at 1st/2nd year. Best is you work out take home pay yourself with Google and your situation.

Unable to give me an answer regarding the above is rather intriguing to me as my previous jobs has no problem sharing these details with me before joining.

Lastly they should be able to clearly inform me of my take home etc, but they don't even want to tell the limitations etc to the allowance given (they only said 50% deduction in one of the allowance if we are not able to achieve KPI, when I probe further, no answer was given)
This I agree and looking at the 91, I can only assume its his birth year.

Dear Friends,

I just get my approval and they required me to do my medical first in SG before they proceed with my EP card and etc.

My basic is 3000 SGD, so I assume I will get the Q1 EP.

I just wondering regarding the Tax, as in my contract of employmeent. On the tax part, it is written that all the income tax is under IRAS and SG goverment.

Is that mean I have to declare and pay my own?

Can otai here advise me regarding the amount of Tax? I have look at IRAS website but still not really understand on the procedure.

I probably start work in SG this August 2013.

Thank you all.

Download the spreadsheets from the link below and key in the value you getting or expect to get from now until Dec 2013.

tyj82,

thank you for the info bro...

So is that mean if I start working at SG, they only will tax me after I complete1 year right? I thought I will still have to pay the tax for August to Dec 2013, which mean less than 183 days = 15 percent or tax resident (which is higher).

Like what my friend say in KL, I will be kopak lorh... heheheehe

I planning to stay in Skudai area, Taman Mutiara Rini if you know where I already buy a house there and commute daily to SG (plan ride my malaysia register bike using 2nd Link which I assume less traffic jam). Other alternative is using public transport but have to check all the route first from my house. Depend which one are cheaper and better time consume.

My office will be around Bukit Timah Road (Toyota Show Room Building).
*
Ah welcome to SG.

Ya you are right, your tax is from August to Dec 2013, not August 2013 to July 2014. Not sure about which category you belong to though. If you are considered resident, then income taxable after 20k, below 20k no need fill the tax. May not hit if 3k * 5 months unless got bonus or other income.

on the pass, probably Q1...but there is also chances of S pass though slimmer.

Tax...some company sign up for the "auto register" thingy.
this means they will submit the total amt they pay u to IRAS
u just go in to file the reliefs u are entitled for and click submit...if nothing to declare, just log in and click submit.
if they are not under the auto register, i suppose they will give u a form like in m'sia stating ur annual income (my company auto register and i duno anyone working in company without auto register)
amt of tax...there should be a tax calculator somewhere in iras website.
*
EP also depends on other thing like paper cert, year of exp and job title. I have my people getting 4.5k but rejected EP, only SP.

The manual form call IR8A, stating basic salary, bonus, director fee, cpf contribution etc just like the first page of the electronic form in IRAS. Then just fill in the numbers.

Depend on company. Cannot too many S Pass holders in a company. Coz they hv the quota. Even, my company help me to apply EP. But, my salary is not high.

$4.5k should get EP (P2) and not EP (Q1). Sg govt will approve for his/ her S Pass application? As you mentioned, S Pass application is mid-skill level and the salary range should be from 2k to 2.9k. I'm wondering whether govt will approve 4.5K for S Pass application?
*
Skill level is not always on par with salary offered. Permit type also not based only on basic salary.

so i highlight to my project manager about this problem.. he said "this is ur personal problem", then i said "if u can't help me regarding this matter, i will extend this matter to ur superior"

my question is:
1. because i already sign the agreement to stay in the house, can it be replace by other tenant? but its from the same company that i worked
2. what can i do to further this matter to my PM superior? formal letter signed by me n my mother perhaps ?
*
1. Any condition you want to impose you need to put it down inside the agreement for both parties to sign. Something like no female tenants in unit etc. If nothing stated, landlord can do anything he want.

2. Your PM job scope include finding a room to suit your needs? I think this one is a personal matter and not related to the PM or his superior, if your contract don't provide any accommodation. Reimburse you with the rent is different thing. Going up or even highlighting it to your PM shows how you deal with problem and people...

Try find muslims landlords. I stayed with 2 muslims landlords before, one very strict on rules, one quite easy going.

Hi guys,

If a Malaysian going over to Sg to work, will he/she getting back the same amount he earn in Malaysia(convert to Singapore local currency)? For example:
Malaysia salary: MYR 5K
Singapore salary: SGD 5K

Malaysia salary: MYR 7K
Singapore salary: SGD 7K

Or it would be lesser?
Does the 10-25% job change hike still applies? (Let's take this as IT Technical job)
Do share your thought smile.gif
*
Don't think it is based on your previous MY salary, more to what job you do and the SG market rate.

Going the other way round, I was offered a lower amount in Malaysia compared to Singapore recently. Like 5 RM and 10 SGD.

prepare for? nothing can stop this haze already. not even N95 mask. I am stationed at construction site, the index here sure exceeds 450 already. The sight is blurry and the workers still working at 10+ level height.
*
MOM issued an advisory note for outdoor workers, nothing about stop work order with PSI level. I asked my site people to get mask and goggles for the workers but the workers said this is nothing compared to where they come from and don't worry sweat.gif .

Using Singtel because of the best coverage and signal in SG marketing they put out. Plan is more expensive and per minute billing but the coverage is better from my experience.

hi all, will be working in singapore soon and company located at beach road.
need recommendation or suggestion regarding the accommodation area. where is the suitable location for me? im more concern bout the overall neighborhood environment and budget around 600-700 for single room. thanks.
*
Beach Road stretch from Bugis to Lavender MRT. I stay near to the Nicoll Highway MRT in Beach Road. Single room 500, double room 600. Around Nicoll Highway will be like little Thai, but they are generally friendly people.

Thx for your reply. my working place will be around concourse, and since i never been to sg, im kinda blur with those places lol..
the single room 500 including utilities? can i have the landlord contact or any webpage for reference?
btw, the living expenses there expensive? (like foods)
*
O, Concourse is 2-3 minutes walk from Nicoll Highway MRT (circle line - orange colour). Lavender MRT will be 15 minutes walk (green colour line). So you can find house around this 2 MRT stations if you commute to work by MRT. Stay at Beach Road then you can walk to work.

I found mine through agent. The house I staying full already. 500 include utilities, but no air con. Go to the first post in this thread, got few links for rooms provided by TS.

Food is cheap if you eat at the nearby food court, 3-4 dollar for lunch and dinner. Cheapest 2.5 if you really want to save.

Lol you did not ask about your job scope during interview? Later they hire you as worker then you really work like bangla.

SG savings depend on your life style lo. Refer to first page for general expenditures ba.
