Oculus maintains a walled garden for their mobile apps. Basically no one can create an app on their own and distribute it. Every app needs to be build based on the device signature (Osig). at least this is how it was for the gear VR version. therefore, just like IOS, quest and GO devices cannot install apps from independent sources easily.

The steamvr compatibiliy seems enticing but that requires additional hardware.

I already have 2 VR devices. if i were to get the quest, it would be only for its untethered vr device. My other option would be to get the wireless htc vive link.

Thanks for ur input though

Quest has unknown sources enabled (for both Link and native Android apps). You can sideload any APKs for the Quest, and root is already available if you don't want to rely on Oculus Developer Mode (no kernel access though).

I have lots of APKs installed, including Virtual Desktop and ALVR for wireless untethered SteamVR access. With those apps you don't need a cable to play SteamVR games, it can be streamed from your PC over 5Ghz wifi

no need external power, just plug and play, direct connection, not extension cable.

considering the official cable which is only 5meter cost RM330+ excluding US to Msia shipping. I'd say it's fairly priced.

You may refer to the video I posted a few post above, that video I'm using the 10meter one.

A couple of my customers shared it in the global Oculus Quest group too

That's very surprising since over 3 meters long is out of USB 3.0 spec unless there's active power...

The official 5 meter cable is fiber optic and super light so there's some difference there

Nice to know there's a choice, but 3 meters is enough for me, my room is too small for any meaningful roomscale gaming

Once you enable sideload you can do everything on the Quest. Its an Android device. Just use Sidequest for any unknownsource.. I can even drop standard phone APK file like Whatsapp on it and it works.
is just not that practical because currently it doesn't support multitasking so it run like a TV screen.
Is there any other VR headset that can run almost all VR apps mobile and PC? none right? hmm.gif

Btw here is the latest Quake 2 VR mod on Quest.. is still in early version but run almost perfect

send back to the official distributor which the 2nd hand seller previous bought from, just show the receipt.

the official distributor will liaise with Vive Malaysia for warranty.

Yes.
VR gaming is way too expensive for average joe.

WMR was relatively low budget entry VR gaming.

I guess... most Malaysian gamers still prefer to spend their money on PS/XBox/nintendo compared to VR headsets sad.gif

Yeah.. VR in Malaysia is more costly than US. Not many people would like to use VR regularly.
You could check out reddit for a more lively community.
I would suggest to hold off Oculus quest unless your really know what you want and/or have the currency to splash.
Oculus Quest is a year old and as per most mobile hardware, goes out of date quick. Performance was always the bottle neck and battery life is only 2-3 hours.

Wrong.
First of all, Oculus Quest was released on May 21, 2019, not yet a year old.

Secondly, Quest is selling like hot cake and out of stock basically everywhere.
Oculus is struggling to manufacture enough of them, especially with recent coronavirus outbreak. https://uploadvr.com/facebook-coronavirus-quest/
So it is unlikely there will be new version from Oculus soon.

Thirdly, Quest is fully portable and you can play anywhere.
With new updates such as hand tracking and Oculus Link (use it with PC), it is one of the VR headset to buy at $399.
Valve Index at $999 might be better for quality but it is not portable, not to mention the difficulty in setting up the lighthouse, and you need a powerful PC.

Well if u must split hair, 8 months and 21 days. Oculus quest, though 1st Gen, utilized android/mobile hardware, snapdragon 835, which is from 2016/17? This hardware barely cope with most VR software and rely on heavy compromises. With the short battery life. I expect next Gen if it ever arrives, would be a huge leap in performance.

Selling out doesnt always means its good. Some accesories for vive and rift S and some WMR are also sold out now. Its just a marketing strat, especially suspicious when they allow "booking". I ve just got my oculus quest last week from online which went through china and arrived within a week via UPS.
Indeed new features/ software upgrades are being developed, but this also happens in other headsets, just with other focuses.

Oculus link, is still in beta with huge compromises. Latency is the biggest issue. This is masked with reprojections and drawing controllers on the headset side. Experience vr owners will notice these reprojections, especially the rotational reprojection types. It is more obvious when throwing an item, as the controller position and the timing of button release doesnt match up.
Adding a repeater to extend the cable only makes this worst.

I m just giving my opinion. U can proceed to pre-order a new quest or perhaps buy a 2nd hand to try it out.
Feel free to ask us anything further. The lowyat community is small but most of us are helpful.

Thanks FluffyTee and 881118 for the replies.
TBH I've been monitoring VR news since 2 years ago, but at the time they were simply too expensive for what they can do, which is very limited.
I understand it's still a rather niche market right now, but for its current capability (besides gaming) I feel it's fine to grab one now. Ordered a Quest but delivery seem to be delayed (thanks corona virus).

p/s: cant wait to try netflix on a virtual big screen TV, and Google Tilt Brush

If u already know what u want, u could order online from local or oversea. Both has its advantages.

But if u are still unsure and have not tested VR yet, u may want to try some locally. U could go to a VR cafe or theme park and try some out yourself. Some local seller may also allow u to try it out

Yeah, I am aiming for HTC Vive due to I mainly game on Steam, much compatibility from review (I admit I not yet test any before).

Talked to their support after that post I made, they gave me links to order online through Shopee.

HTC is pretty much all rounder for SteamVR. Cant really go wrong with that. It has IPD adjustment and Lens to eye distance adjustment. Alot of accessories like trackers and DAS and wireless adapters. Cheap protective accessories are also available online.
However there is a trackpad hardware issue due to the design. Both my controllers were eventually. Good news is, its easily fixable and reinforced.
Another downside is, the warranty service seems to be pretty bad.
Another common complaint bout the vive is the weight on the cheeks due to the design.
U can easily try the Vive out in most VR cafes or arcade first.
