Yeah, I am aiming for HTC Vive due to I mainly game on Steam, much compatibility from review (I admit I not yet test any before).
Talked to their support after that post I made, they gave me links to order online through Shopee.
From what I know, being official reseller for Vive Malaysia, Vive Malaysia already discontinued the original HTC Vive as the product no longer in production, replaced by Vive Cosmos.
The gen 1 consumer VR (HTC Vive and Oculus Rift CV1) resolution is quite low if you compare it with today's (I call it gen 1.5) VR standard, with Rift S, Samsung Odyssey+, Cosmos, Index, Pimax etc. After getting the Rift S, I couldn't accept the CV1 and Vive resolution thereafter.
But the gen 1 consumer VR is now relatively cheap now since those that moved on to gen1.5 wanna let go their gen 1 headset.
In terms of compatibility with SteamVR, I would say all the main VR headset regardless of brand is compatible, SteamVR has controller module for most of the main VR headset, including the Oculus Quest with Link. So I wouldn't be worried about non-Vive headset not working with SteamVR.
And other advise are,
- don't look at specs on paper, VR don't work that way, higher resolution doesn't mean it's clearer, there's difference between OLED and LCD display,
- some VR have built in sensors so it's super user friendly in terms of using and setting up, some VR require setting up and calibration of external sensors, the many steps and wires may be overwhelming if you prefer something that is plug and play,
- some VR headset design is skii mask style, some is halo headband style, see which type is more comfortable for you,
- then there's the controller weight, ergonomics, battery life, tracking quality, some controller require more battery and eats up battery fast, some controller are light and ergonomic to hold, some controller have questionable tracking quality, etc.
- and of course, there's also price, premium pricing doesn't necessarily mean it's a premium headset.
And if you're interested to try out Oculus brand VR, feel free to make appointment to drop by my office/showroom, I can show you and explain more in person.
