Well you can try LYP for the RAM prices, it will be hell cheaper than the ones provided at our Macstores.
Now the question is which Macbook are you wanting to buy?

Seconded! The RAM prices through the Apple store's upgrades are rather steep. It's a pity that the MacBook doesn't ship in more upgrade-friendly configurations for its memory. You're always stuck with two sticks of DDR2 in the MacBook.

I've got to keep on waiting until I know which college I'll be attending. I intend to take advantage of Apple's Education Discounts. $200 USD off on a new MacBook Pro is really desirable smile.gif I just hope Mac OS X 10.5 will be out before Spring Break.

You can't upgrade the laptop unless you get it from the US. But again you could open it and DIY if you dont mind

If you want a simple laptop [bear in mind its on Core 2 Duo with a cool webcam , I am telling you iSight is superb]. It has wifi , bulit in modem and all other stuff

You should try OSX , trust me once you have touched OSX you would not touch Windows , ask the forumers here. Ask few of my friends here . Thats the beauty of Apple ,  the design looks soo hot and it looks so-cool.

I just started using the Macbook a month ago, love the thing. No worries about RAM or HDD, its easily upgraded DIY.

Macbook doesnt come with built in modem. It doesnt have express card slot. Mac MSN Messenger doesnt support video chat. AND unless you are really confident about your Mac, you will worry about having the Random Shutdown Syndrome.

But got to love it, terrific design & OS & remote control.

You could fix that with some 3rd party MSN program such as aMSN

get aMSN if you want a real msn messenger which supports Video Chat. IMO , MAC MSN Messenger sucks big time. Get aMSN , a true MSN Messenger client for the MacoSX !

I am surprised none of the MacBook and MacBook Pro users here complain about the LCD quality. it has a very narrow field of view, something which I only realised recently when I have actually scout around for notebook checking out the LCD, among others. in fact, my problem with MacBook LCD is the same as my problem with the LCD of Toshiba Portege M500. It is simply too bright and washed-out to look at any angle other than the optimal pre-designed view. the brightness is also not uniform and there are lights noticeably coming from the side, which is a flaw, as lights should only be shining from the back of the LCD.
Just compare these LCD to the LCD monitors for desktop and even bigger notebooks, such 15' and 17' and you will notice the significant difference in clarity and field of vision. such LCD is only tolerable in older notebooks back when the technology has not advanced to the current stage but for a state-of-the-art notebook, this is a major disappointment.
as it stands, such LCD is totally inadequate for any movie editing, graphics works, image processing and only good for one or two hours of Internet surfing and simple word processing, something we can all do with RM1999 IBM notebook or even a second-hand Powerbook. shame on the branded companies for using subpar LCD.

Thats the disadvantage of Glossy Screen Displays....MacBook Pro dont use Glossy Screen Display , so you would not face the same problem as MacBook.

@prasys,

the 17' and 15' notebooks also uses Glossy Screen Displays but they don't have the same problem. they are crystal clear and crisp, just like the desktop LCD monitors. you will be hard pressed to find a new notebook that doesn't come with Glossy Screen Displays LCD nowadays. in fact, its only known flaw is that it reflects too much external light compared to matte display of old but our standard CRT monitor of old and even normal CRT television also reflects external lights and create distractions. this has got nothing to do with the whitish, washed-out, narrow field of view problem I am pointing out.

Yeah, I'll be going to the US to start school in fall of 2007.

1GB of RAM is becoming the standard. I think the MacBook that you're looking at comes from Apple with two sticks of 256MB DD2. You could swap one out, grab a 1GB stick, and work with 1.25GB tongue.gif

Guys, I know that my question will be slightly OT, but any ideas when OS X Leopard is coming out? I've been using MacBook for almost 3 1/2 months now, and it seems Rosetta on the Tiger version still needs a lot of improvement. Waiting to see how improved the Rosetta will be on the 10.5 version.

Well, the MacBook cannot be configured with a single 1GB stick. If you leave the configuration as the base model, Apple installs two 256MB sticks. Upgrading to 1GB leaves you with two 512MB sticks and a larger dent in your wallet. For people looking to upgrade with parts from Lowyat Plaza, it's best to stick to the base configuration for RAM. It's possible to configure a MacBook Pro with a single 1GB stick - that's what I intend to do.

I imagine Apple will be released OS X 10.5 at the same time as Microsoft drops Windows Vista. They're going to be vying for direct competition. Apple has greater confidence now with Boot Camp, I'm sure. I was discussing this with a friend last night. Apple is definitely going more mainstream - the tradeoff is that it is slowly losing its elitist status.

Pity Microsoft though, coming out with Vista and all to couterpart OSX.4 and once it's launched, OSX.5 will bug them for another century. rclxub.gif

I hear it's all eye candy. I haven't given it a shot, but I have seen a number of screenshots and read some impressions from the Betas. Vista doesn't seem like much to me tongue.gif I want to go Mac :]
