This is a relatively new type of surgery.
Therefore no long term data is available.
As with all surgeries, there are risks.
We took an acceptable (to us who did lasik. May not seem acceptable to other people & you) risk.

As of now there is not much evidence to prove that lasik will be detrimental to our health in the future.
Of course that may change with more long term studies in the future.
Dependency on glasses is hazardous to me. I cant find a suitable sunglasses that can accommodate presciption lenses.
Without it, I can barely open my eyes while driving in full sunlight.

It is a no brainer FOR ME. smile.gif

Thought I'd share my experience regarding my Lasik operation. I did mine at Optimax TTDI with Dr Stephen Chung end of August last year, so it has been nearly 6 months since. I chose Optimax TTDI after surveying a lot of my friends who have had their Lasik done previously at either Optimax or Vista. My eyesight before the surgery was 450 R and 425 L for shortsightedness with 150 astig for both L & R. I did Custom Lasik and paid RM7776 for both eyes (spreading it over 12 months).

The day right after the ops was painful and I popped all the painkillers given to me but after that my recovery was great. I have been (extremely) lucky and thankful that I have no side effects (none of the halos, etc that most people would experience). I did have very dry eyes for the first few months and had to bring the provided eye drops with me at all times but I think starting the 4th or 5th month post-op, I stopped using the eye drops. During my last eye check-up (3 month post-op), my right eye has 0 shortsightedness and 0 astig while my left eye has 50 shortsightedness and 50 astig - not perfect, but it's good enough and I'm happy that I no longer have to carry my contact lenses and solution every time I travel and have crystal clear vision the moment I open my eyes in the morning. It wasn't cheap but I still think Lasik is a worthwhile investment.

Just in case any of you know someone that has bad or worse vision after LASIK or any surgery, please let me know. I know an optometrist who specialized in POST LASIK or POST EYE SURGERY Lens which can help quite tremendously in reducing glare and halo.

I have been wondering the motivations of many young people interesting it LASIK/LASEK to remove the dependency on spectacles/contact lens "forever".

Q1) if the procedure is successful and zero side effects.. the benefit last 20++ years (spec-less). For those who did it lets say at age 21, after they reach 40++ years old, presbyopia  sets in.. so its back to using spec again.

Q2) the "lifetime" guarantee by many LASIK centres to correct vision is dependent on the cornea thickness of patient. There is a limit on how many times a cornea can be reshaped to restore visual acuity.

Q3) As LASIK has tampered with the cornea (same like eye surgery), what happens when we have cataracts when we gets old (which is common as we aged). The success rate of cataract surgery depends on the integrity of the cornea too.

So its doing LASIK /LASEK first, enjoy for the next 30++ years, then start worry bout "higher" risks of visual impairment when we gets older for many of us here?

Finally, with all the different pricing and promotions by the centres... it started to become like "plastic surgery" already. Is there  a regulatory body to ensure all these centres provide the best support/care for their patients?

obviously LASIK is for convenience and the handsome/beautiful factor..

as the condition of each person's eyes are different, you might get different results.. but majority people have gone LASIK with success..
worse come to worse if the power increase after operation, you'll just have to wear specs again, but by that time ur eyessights will be pretty much stable, so u won't need to wear superthick specs anymore..

Do understand there is not much statistical data, but Lasik in msia been there more than 10/15 years now. How about thos who did the surgery in their late 30s or 40s, we should have some data from, them right?

Considering for my Hubby. susahlah rclxub.gif

You might want to cite your source for that information bro.

Please don't just give numbers from out of thin air.

was recommended to perform ASA (advance surface ablation) procedure instead. Due to my cornea is thin. Doc says this procedure will take longer to heal 3~4 weeks time. what is your view on it?

the failure rate sometimes are caused by the patients themselves that doesnt have full understanding of their vision problem which are caused by underlying diseases (for eg. diabetes) , or decided to proceed even though being made known the higher risks compared to other patients (borderline cornea thickness for eg.)

Not all myopia are the "garden variety" type.
